Today's (Sunday's) US Kindle Daily Deal is "Up to 80% off on Science Fiction reads on Kindle". I don't read enough science fiction to know which ones are good deals, so here's the link to the Daily Deal page, which shows 86 (!!!) titles: https://www.amazon.com/b/ref=KCdls_b..._i=11552285011

ADD: I do, however, definitely recognize mysteries, and I have no idea what Drawing Conclusions, by Donna Leon, is doing in the list. Excellent book, but not science fiction .

A few notables (to me) in the Kindle deal:

Hild by Nicola Griffith (more of a historical story, no fantasy. Sequel apparently being written)
An Unkindness of Magicians by Kat Howard
The Monster Baru Cormorant by Seth Dickinson (sequel)
The Magicians by Lev Grossman
Zero Sum Game by S. L. Huang (action-y technothriller. First in series)
Zeroes by Chuck Wendig (another technothriller)
European Travel for the Monstrous Gentlewoman by Theodora Goss (sequel; historical fantasy featuring many women from Victorian stories)
A Scanner Darkly by Philip K. Dick

The only book I can give a personal recommendation on is Marko Kloos' "Terms of Enlistment". (Animal Farm doesn't count)

It ain't great art, but it is a solid and entertaining military science fiction story. Kloos paints a believable picture of a world that is slowly losing it's livability, it's concept of integrity, honor, and doing the 'right thing' The world isn't in a sudden collapse, so much as it is slowly wearing out physically and spiritually.

And, like a lot of poor boys everywhere, the hero sees the military as a way out of hoplessness and despair. On a scale of 1 -10, I'd say it's around 7. A great read for free, a good read for $2.

I thoroughly enjoyed The Magicians by Lev Grossman, and the others in the series. The third one took quite a while before it became interesting but it was worth it in the end.

Newly minted Hugo winner for best novelette, If at First You Don't Succeed, Try, Try Again by Zen Cho is free at B&N (it's a B&N original). This will be my first B&N 'purchase' in a long, long time. Time to confirm I'm still able to remove DRM.

Quote:
Byam is an imguri, a kind of magical, giant worm, and it wants to become a dragon. It studies The Way, it consults monks, it works very hard, and it keeps trying.

We see three attempts over three thousand years. Things are not going well for Byam.

For its last attempt, the disrupting factor is a human woman, Leslie Han, who looks up, sees it, and says, "An imguri!"

Byam is not inclined to forgive the sabotage. It sets out to find this new, unfamiliar kind of monk, and exact revenge

What follows is unexpected, strange, sweet, and in the end, completely satisfying

It's an excellent story. I believe the nookbook is DRM-free. Also online here:

Strange. There are multiple publications so maybe Amazon UK saw one was free.

Otherwise I suggest Gutenberg

I was kind of annoyed with the Zen Cho - the B&N blog won’t let non-US customers download freebies. I had to scrape the text and the cover, and merge them in Calibre to end up with an epub. Very annoying in the Hugo packet to get a link instead of an epub file.

Have you tried improving your workflow by using tools such as Pocket? (Note, however, that Pocket has a tendency to strip some important words, such as those marked up with <cite> tags - However those aren't common in fiction.)

All but one of the novelette and short story nominees this year are available online. Why read just one?

BEST NOVELETTE
BEST SHORT STORY

Love using Pocket with my Kobo to read online short fiction. Every once in a great while a Pocket article won't be available on the Kobo. In those cases, I use the send-to-Kindle browser extension and read it on my Kindle instead. If there is unusual formating (like STET linked above), it might get messed up. But I've rarely run into that.

ETA:
@maddz
Yeah, I don't know why on earth B&N didn't provide the epub for the packet. Glad it didn't end up being a disadvantage though!

Why didn't you go to barnesandnoble.com and pick-up the DRM-free ePub there? Here's a link to B&N SFF Originals. All are available free.

Edit: nevermind; I missed the 'non-US customers'
