Orenda Books sale

Orenda Books have some ebooks on sale at £0.99 direct from their website, cheaper than at any of the main retailers.

They have some good crime authors, I can recommend Kjell Ola Dahl (Oslo Detectives series) and Ragnar Jónasson (Dark Iceland series) if you like Nordic Noir.

The website store is a bit clunky, I can't seem to see the book descriptions there, but the checkout and download process worked fine. There don't seem to be any georestrictions.

NOTE: Some of the ebooks have DRM, others are DRM-free. The DRM ones are only available in EPUB format and need ADE or similar to download. The DRM-free ones are available in EPUB and MOBI formats. To see which ones are DRM-free, look for Kindle in the "Available for" list.

I don't know how long the sale has been running or when it ends. It might be possible to buy the books at another retailer and price match against the publisher's website if you are in the UK.

(Edit: Beware that the DRM-free ebooks bought direct from the publisher have an intrusive watermark: your name and email is displayed at the end of each chapter. Ugh. The DRM ebooks are fine though, they don't have the watermark.)

I have now read the book and enjoyed it. It was a nice change of pace to read a book from the perspective of regular patrolmen/women rather than detectives.

This is the first in a series and I plan on picking more up.

Something Blue is the third in the Lord and Lady Hetheridge series by Emma Jameson. It is free right now at Kindle and Kobo US. The titles in this series are also found in a couple of omnibuses that have been on sale before, but if you didn't buy the omnibuses, or just prefer individual volumes without having to split them yourself, free is nice! Oh yeah, I've read and liked all of the titles in this series...

The New York Times Bestselling Series.

Anthony Hetheridge, ninth baron of Wellegrave and chief superintendent for Scotland Yard, will marry Kate Wakefield in three weeks. It's inevitable--the invitations are out, the flowers are ordered, the cake is chosen. But murder waits for no man, and no wedding.

In London's prestigious West End, a disgraced CEO has been murdered at Hotel Nonpareil, an exclusive destination. No one, it seems, liked Michael Martin Hughes. Not his estranged wife, Thora, or his defiant son, Griffin. Not Hotel Nonpareil's manager, its head of security, or perhaps even the two most important women in Hughes's life: his future bride, Arianna, or his secret girlfriend, Riley. And before Hughes died, he incurred the wrath of none other than Sir Duncan Godington, longtime nemesis of both CS Hetheridge and DS Paul Bhar.

Hetheridge, Kate, and Bhar find themselves under tremendous pressure to uncover the killer as fast as possible. Have Scotland Yard and Downing Street lost confidence in Hetheridge? Find out as you return to the world of Ice Blue and Blue Murder in Something Blue, the third in the New York Times bestselling Lord & Lady Hetheridge mystery series.

Deadly Trio: Ice Blue, Blue Murder, Something Blue appeared at #19 on the New York Times bestseller list on July 13, 2014.

Shoulder the Sky is the second in the Reavley/World War I series by Anne Perry. It has dropped to $1.99 at Kindle and Kobo US. An omnibus of all five titles in this series (titled The Reavley Series) was on sale in the UK a couple of years ago, so check before you buy.

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000FC28US
Kobo US: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/shoulder-the-sky-3

Spoiler:
Quote:
In the firmament of great historical novelists, Anne Perry is a star of the greatest magnitude. First there were her acclaimed Victorian mysteries, sparkling with passion and suspense. Now readers have embraced this bestselling new series of World War I novels–which juxtapose the tranquil life of the English countryside with the horrors of war.

By April of 1915, as chaplain Joseph Reavley tends to the soldiers in his care, the nightmare of trench warfare is impartially cutting down England’s youth. On one of his rescue forays into no-man’s-land, Joseph finds the body of an arrogant war correspondent, Eldon Prentice. A nephew of the respected General Owen Cullingford, Prentice was despised for his prying attempts to elicit facts that would turn public opinion against the war. Most troublesome to Joseph, Prentice has been killed not by German fire but, apparently, by one of his own compatriots. What Englishman hated Prentice enough to kill him? Joseph is afraid he may know, and his sister, Judith, who is General Cullingford’s driver and translator, harbors her own fearful suspicions.

Meanwhile, Joseph and Judith’s brother, Matthew, an intelligence officer in London, continues his quiet search for the sinister figure they call the Peacemaker, who, like Eldon Prentice, is trying to undermine the public support for the struggle–and, as the Reavley family has good reason to believe, is in fact at the heart of a fantastic plot to reshape the entire world. An intimate of kings, the Peacemaker kills with impunity, and his dark shadow stretches from the peaceful country lanes of Cambridgeshire to the twin hells of Ypres and Gallipoli.

In this mesmerizing series, Anne Perry has found a subject worthy of her gifts. Illuminating the murderous conflict whose violence still resounds in our consciousness–as well as the souls of men and women who lived it–Shoulder the Sky is a taut, inspiring masterpiece.

Thanks - I picked up a couple. I have seen some of these authors briefly on sale at Kindle UK, not sure about Kindle US, but was nice to get directly from the publisher! (Even with ugly social DRM...)

Thanks! It looks like the first book in the series, Ice Blue (Lord and Lady Hetheridge Mystery Series Book 1), is free right now, too. At least at Amazon -- I didn't check Kobo.

Spoiler:

"What made this ebook such pleasurable reading was not the murder or even the Police procedure, but the rather wonderful cast of characters that the author, Emma Jameson, has created to populate her world. In the space of about 184 pages, Emma has managed to give us a whole collection of individuals, each very nicely rounded out and real. Even very minor players - such as the tall PC who finds the pistol seems to be alive and obviously has a life outside the book." -- Tony Cole, eBookanoid.com

Anthony Hetheridge, ninth Baron of Wellegrave, Chief Superintendent for New Scotland Yard, never married, no children, no pets, no hobbies, and not even an interesting vice, will turn sixty in three weeks. With the exception of his chosen career, too sordid for his blue-blooded family to condone, his life has been safe and predictable. But then he meets Detective Sergeant Kate Wakefield – beautiful, willful, and nearly half his age. When Hetheridge saves the outspoken, impetuous young detective from getting the sack, siding with her against Scotland Yard’s powerful male hierarchy, his cold, elegantly balanced world spins out of control. Summoned to London’s fashionable Belgravia to investigate the brutal murder of a financier, Hetheridge must catch the killer while coping with his growing attraction to Kate, the reappearance of an old flame, and the secret that emerges from his own past.

Deadly Trio: Ice Blue, Blue Murder, Something Blue appeared at #19 on the New York Times bestseller list on July 13, 2014.

Per SYKM, the second title in the series was a finalist for an Edgar.

It has dropped to $3.99 at Kindle and Kobo US (coupon/VIPable).

Hostage to Death is a non-series title by Roderic Jeffries, originally written with the pen name Jeffrey Ashford. It is free right now at Kindle US and UK.

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01M118M8X
Kindle UK: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Hostage-Dea...dp/B01M118M8X/

Spoiler:
Quote:
A perfectly planned and orchestrated bank heist, suddenly turns into a deadly siege…

Unable to control the hostages, a woman starts to scream.

In the midst of this chaos, a silent alarm is triggered causing the criminals to be surrounded by the local police force.

With no option but to surrender, the mastermind behind the robbery has one last idea to ensure success.

During the aftermath, Bill Steen, a worker at the bank, discovers the deceit.

Hiding in plain view, the missing money is within his grasp.

At home, his wife is battling with severe asthma which regularly requires hospitalisation.

The cure? Relocate to a new home, ideally abroad, clear of the inner city smog.

Bill is tempted. But is the temptation enough to expedite his lifelong dream to relieve his wife of her suffering?

It will certainly cost him his conscience, potentially a lengthy prison sentence and maybe even his life.

But it would save hers…

And Bill can’t stop himself wondering – which choice is the right one?

Hostage to Death is a thrilling crime novel, complete with surprising twists in every chapter.

Song of the Lion is the third in Anne Hillerman's continuation of her father's Leaphorn/Chee/Manuelito series. It dropped to $2.99 a couple of years ago, and since then has briefly been on sale for $1.99 a couple of times. It is on sale again today at $1.99 at both Kindle and Kobo US.

Often continuation series are sort of so-so, but I've enjoyed all of the Anne H titles that I've read.

If you might be interested and haven't grabbed it, do it quick - previous price drops have been brief!

In addition to the freebie, a bunch (10+) of Roderic Jeffries titles have just gone on Kindle countdown in both the US and UK for $0.99 and £0.99 respectively, for about a week more. Too many titles for me to list individually, and most have been on sale/free before, but here are links if you want to take a look.

Sticks & Scones is the 10th in the Goldy Bear Schulz series by Diane Mott Davidson. It has dropped to $1.99 at Kindle and Kobo US.

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B002WJM55K
Kobo US: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/sticks-scones

Spoiler:
Quote:
Celebrated for her unique blend of first-class suspense and five-star fare, Diane Mott Davidson has won scores of fans and earned a place on major bestseller lists across the country. Now she dishes up another dangerously tasty treat of murder and mystery.

For Colorado caterer Goldy Schulz, accepting a series of bookings at Hyde Castle is like a dream come true. It’s not every day that she gets to cook authentic Elizabethan fare--especially at a real castle that was brought over from England and reassembled stone by stone in Aspen Meadow. Goldy is determined that everything will go right--which is why, she figures later, everything went terribly wrong. It begins when a shotgun blast shatters her window. Then Goldy discovers a body lying in a nearby creek. And when shots ring out for the second time that day, someone Goldy loves is in the line of fire. Suddenly the last thing Goldy wants to think about is Shakespeare’s Steak Pie, 911 Chocolate Emergency Cookies, or Damson-in-Distress Plum Tart.
