Ok .... so if she's leaving now, she could be on the East coast of the US and she works 8 to 3ish. (I've been trying to guess a physical location for our newest wackie.... er, well suited participant!)

Do you bring a portfolio to a job like that? Just curious.

Also, around here we have a "League of NH Craftsmen" that operates a couple of stores with member products and exhibits at an annual fair. This is for jewelry, pottery, fancy woodwork, weaving, etc. It's a juried group. Is there something like that where you are?

I could have sworn I was in a different thread, clicked a next page and all of a sudden was reading rants about Ikea.

Anyway, my job was eliminated back in November, and I start a new one (which I have to move for) next Monday. Good Luck! It happens!

Manufacturing these days is about crapamine building. A portfolio is pretty useless. All they want to know is where you worked before because they love to get secrets from one another. A CV is adequate. My best asset is my website, this way they can have a good idea of my work quality level.

Fairs and exhibits are expensive propositions. You have to pin down exactly what can be sold and at what price. Can you imagine working for a month on a piece with 2000$ worth of exotic wood and not selling that piece?
The best I got from those fairs is a contract for a library or a crapamine kitchen, all of which can not even cover the expenses brought by the exposition.

What I'd like to see though is something that happens only in big US cities. Galleries dedicated to artful furniture. I dream of making a masterpiece, the kind that takes years to make. Of course there is no such gallery over here, just the local Ikea.

Thanks for caring Neko.

You could probably make a small living by properly assembling the furniture that people buy from Ikea. (My brother-in-law has a sideline doing this. But he is a mere carpenter. As an ebeniste, you would doubtless find the prospect soul-destroying.)

Oh, not that badly, I thought of doing something in the same way once. Assembling barbecues or bicycles. But there is a commercial venture called 'Rent a Husband' venturing in the same line.

That kind of artful furniture is often featured in League stores here, and the cities don't have to be that large. Portsmouth has several shops that carry that sort of thing, and I know of at least one in Manchester. (Both in NH.) And there are also many stores that carry that sort of thing in North Conway. I think there might even be a store like that in Dover, hardly the cultural center of the US.

You wouldn't be able to sell in League stores, because you need to live within 10 mi of the NH border, but there are many other stores of that sort. Shipping could be a problem, but if you can get past that hurdle, I'd recommend contacting the owner of this gallery: http://www.nwbarrett.com/ Specifically, this page: http://www.nwbarrett.com/furnishings.html

The Muffin Man and I got our wedding rings there many years ago. I generally make a point of stopping in there when I'm in Portsmouth, even though I can't afford most of the beautiful things there.

Okay, I hate the ending of this ad' and may have to arrange for all associated copywriters to be killed following significant sessions of torture (marathon movie-watching sessions starring Will Ferrell), but, aside from that, it's apropos, and my way of volunteering to be the fall-guy for you both at your job interviews:

Just don't expect me to do any of that dancing bollocks afterwards. But if you wanna do a celebratory farkstick-dance afterwards, go for your life.

Cheers,
Marc

Yvan, I have seen and touched the Sony case you made for Bob Russell. It was a piece of art. The design and craftsmanship were superb. My maternal grandfather was a woodworker and I wish he had lived longer and that we had lived closer to him so I could have learned more. The few pieces of his craft that have survived are well treasured and IMHO on the same level as your work. (Given the distance in years and the family ties this translates to yours being better than a memory and a few rnadom pieces.)

Best of luck in securing a new position.

Thank you Wood. Have you seen the one I made for NatCh? Now there's a nice complicated one.

I just had a call this morning and my application has not been retained. "Better luck next time." they said.
