My favorite place is in my recliner in the living room. Unfortunately, I have some noisy neighbors across the hall who make it difficult for me to concentrate, so when they are making a racket my second-favorite place is in my desk chair in my bedroom.

I hope this is the right place to ask these questions....

Has anyone tried to use it on a commercial airline? Has anyone been asked to turn off Whispernet while flying? Or if Kindle is considered an "airline approved" device?

I would assume that, even if Whispernet was on, you wouldn't be able to d/l a book, since it's the Sprint network which doesn't really work too well over 3000 ft in the air....

BTW: I assume you mean 30,000ft.

Cell phones are not allowed in planes. So you really should keep the wireless off during flights.

That said, they will/can work. Cell companies don't like them used because they can actually hit too many cell sites.

I'm not a lefty. I hold the Kindle in my left hand so that my right hand is free to pick up a Diet Coke!

I read it on the subway, 1/2 an hour in the morning and 1/2 an hour in the evening. Really improves the commute! :-)

Have you used the text-to-speech feature much? Do you have any kind of feel for how many books allow it?

I'm very curious about it. I should probably just wait until mine arrives, but you're the first person I've seen who mentioned using it, so I couldn't resist asking....

Nope, actually I meant 3000 ft. I'm a pilot, and in the only time the cell actually registers a tower is when I'm on final (below 1600, actually, come to think of it).
And the reason is exactly as you stated - it hits too many cell towers and is so quickly shifting that it can't hold a signal. At least that's my guess. Since my plane has no fly-by-wire in it, there's no chance of cell interference, so it's not a problem to have the phone turned on, but it's a moot point anyway, since the phone is unusable in the air. And since the Kindle is Sprint, just like my cell, it too would be useless.

As for commercial flights, you're also exactly right - they should be turned off. Not necessarily because they would do harm, but because that is the airline's policy, and it's their show!
I was just wondering how the Kindle was treated when in flight. Flight attendants can ask to see that your phone is in "airplane mode"... would they even think - or know - to ask that you turn off the wireless on the Kindle?

Just idle curiosity....
