Hi folks -

I really like the iPhone app. However, that I can't read my newspapers or magazines is a real bummer. I'm sure there's a reason we can't download our daily papers, but that's exactly the sort of thing I'd like to read on the iPhone - a short article standing on line, a story while waiting for the movie to begin...etc.

However, as a free app it's great - and it addresses (in a way) one of my main complaints about the Kindle - no light for reading in bed. (I know I could get one of those book light contraptions, but they remind me too much of War of the Worlds...)

They'll probably update the app as they do most apps, and maybe we'll see some additional features. But hey - the price is right.

Cheers!
Larry

Amazon has always said that those subscriptions are for 1 device only. This applies here apparently. I'm not surprised.

No great loss on newspapers or blogs. But with magazines, color would be nice. Since the iPhone counts as a device, those who wish should be able to get a subscription -- but the problem appears to be archived "books" being the only supported item on the Ki -- since periodicals don't get archived, you can't retrieve them to read on the Ki.

Of course, for those outside the US, where breaking DRM is legal, they could download them to the PC (requires purchase of a Kindle - grab a cheap one on ebay that is out of warranty and broken; all you need is a serial #), break the DRM and then move the books into the correct directory on the iPhone (which may require jailbreaking the device - I know you can extract using google, but not sure about placing files onto the iPhone that way).

they probably want to reserve some features for the Kindle so they can sell them.

I think this is going to cause add-on sales on both sides of the fence.

And their deals with the newspaper/magazine publishers may not (currently) allow it.

I tried it on my iphone with all the unique set of numbers I could find in the about screen (ie. serial #, Wifi MAC Address, Bluetooth MAC Address, IMEI, ICCID). They all give the same error "Error: no key found. maybe the PID is incorrect".

Edit: found out you need to use the 'identifier' code from itunes (thanks to another post on this site)

Sorry if this has been asked, but does anyone think there might be a possibility of a kindle application for the Blackberry?

You need the UUID. In iTunes you can get to it by clicking on Serial Number when your device is connected. I don't know where you'd find it on the device itself.

My current ereader is an iPhone, but I've only used Stanza a few times because the screen is so small for reading. I know you can adjust the fonts and and such, but since the Stanza app is already more configurable than the Kindle app do you think anyone will really prefer it over Stanza? Or is it simply another way to hook people into the Kindle store (versus feedbooks) as a platform?

Go carefully...

Feedbooks is free public domain books. Amazon has a lot of PD books but it's really for all the books most folks would walk into their local bookstore to buy (current and older catalog).

It's definitely possible although nothing has been announced.

I wonder how much amazon makes off the actual device. if not that much....it would seem that they should make the distirbution of books as wide as possible.

It is probably not Amazon's call - or at least not entirely. If the publisher's (and the authors) don't buy in on the distribution plan then Amazon's won't have any books to sell. If Amazon is going to extend a reader across more platforms they're going to have to get permission from the publishers to do so.

I suspect Amazon would be willing to extend to other platforms if they could get permission from enough publishers to make it worth their time.

So would Amazon selling Kindle editions for the Apple devices point to them just trying to gain market share, or are they making enough profit on the ebooks themselves that they're willing to open up to non-amazon devices?

Or are they getting some kind of kickback for providing the kindle software for the Apple devices?
