So...
I typically don't read too much science fiction or fantasy, but I do dip my toes in from time to time. And I find I'm dipping a bit more based on some of the recommendations in this thread...so thanks to everyone for the discussions and the deals! ![]() I'm now actually starting to pick up enough books in these genres that I might like to organize them, and learn a bit more perhaps about the authors and their other books. In the area of mysteries, which is most of the fiction that I read, I rely heavily on the Stop, You're Killing Me website, which has lots of good info: author info, recommendations, indexes, book and author links, etc. But it's only for mysteries. I am aware of Fantastic Fiction, which has some nice lists, but (to me, at least) isn't quite as full-featured, and also of Goodreads, but what I'm really wondering is if there is something like SYKM, but specific just for science fiction/fantasy? Thanks in advance ![]() |

If you have a specific author in mind, you can look them up on the Internet Speculative Fiction Database.
http://www.isfdb.org/ For lists of notable books, there's Worlds Without End. https://worldswithoutend.com/ |

Would they be a good place to start? (Just to hold off a slew of recommendations, I know a bit about Wolfe and Book of the New Sun and the Mists series and so forth. I'm just wondering if Wizard Knight is worth a read, I guess and how it compares to his other work.) |

I always recommend new adult readers of Wolfe start with The Fifth Head of Cerberus. It's three interrelated novellas, and Wolfe was really at the peak of his sneakiness for Cerberus. |

Deathbird Stories by Harlan Ellison is heavily discounted at Amazon.
However you feel about Ellison as a personality, this is an indispensable collection for following the New Wave science fiction of the 1960s and 70s. |

Timeless: A Drizzt Novel (Generations Book 1)
by R. A. Salvatore is 1.99 at U.S. stores Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Timeless-Driz...t%2C410&sr=1-1 Kobo: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/timeless-61 Below is the blurb: At long last, New York Times bestselling author R. A. Salvatore returns with one of fantasy's most beloved and enduring icons, the dark elf Drizzt Do'Urden, in an all-new trilogy full of swordplay, danger, and imaginative thrills, Centuries ago, in the city of Menzoberranzan, the City of Spiders, the City of Drow, nestled deep in the unmerciful Underdark of Toril, a young weapon master earned a reputation far above his station or that of his poor house. The greater nobles watched him, and one matron, in particular, decided to take him as her own. She connived with rival great houses to secure her prize, but that prize was caught for her by another, who came to quite enjoy the weapon master. This was the beginning of the friendship between Zaknafein and Jarlaxle, and the coupling of Matron Malice and the weapon master who would sire Drizzt Do’Urden. R. A. Salvatore reveals the Underdark anew through the eyes of Zaknafein and Jarlaxle—an introduction to the darkness that offers a fresh view of the opportunities to be found in the shadows and an intriguing prelude to the intriguing escapes that lie ahead in the modern-day Forgotten Realms. Here, a father and his son are reunited and embark on adventures that parallel the trials of centuries long past as the friends of old are joined by Drizzt, Hero of the North, trained by Grandmaster Kane in the ways of the monk. But the scourge of the dangerous Lolth’s ambitions remain, and demons have been foisted on the unwitting of the surface. The resulting chaos and war will prove to be the greatest challenge for all three. |
