I don't really think it's being "childish" to want the option to turn off an annoying "feature." I don't like it because it usually pops up before the ending of the book, where there's often a note from the author. But if I had my way I would also like the option to remove the GoodReads icon from Home Page and remove the app altogether.

I like my Kindle readers also. But just because I like them it doesn't mean I have to like EVERYTHING about them. If I had my choice, every book would open at the cover and the "before you go" popup would just ... go.

I use Goodreads integration (but rarely the ‘app’, which is horribly slow and only shows the default Shelves), but if you have not connected a Goodreads account, it should hide the UI for it entirely. I think I said earlier that I’d prefer to turn off the sometimes unexpected automatic presentation of B4YG and be able to explicitly invoke it from Menu. I may want to ‘finish’ it before reading to ‘End‘, however the publisher chose to define it.

It shows up at whatever is defined as the end of the book in the TOC, which is any point you like, with no required relationship to the actual last page (it can even be before the defined start position, though the Kindle's behaviour is a bit... odd if you do that). It's common to put the end before random ads for other books and that sort of thing, but a badly-produced book could easily put it before the end of the actual content.

Another update! I excitedly go to "What's New" and hold my breath while I search for the words "screensaver". It's like checking my lottery ticket numbers. Not sure why I bother.

Mostly they are to do with enhancing Marketing and/or DRM. Any improvement otherwise in GUI since the 1st Kindle is minimal. Biggest plus was non-Latin/Roman language & font support and publisher fonts. Both of which existed on Linux YEARS before anyone made any eReader.

No. I don't think possible on Sony or Kindles to "go back" only "forwards"

I think Kindle knows that making everyone happy is impossible because some have no intention of ever being happy.

Amazon are driven by marketing concerns. Not what readers might be happy with. Sadly true with Kobo, Sony, Barnes & Noble etc.
