Even if you don't root it the 1 gig of ram makes it run faster than the gl3 because unlike a pc without an SSD the hard drive is not the bottleneck per se as much as a platter based old school pc hard drive.

4.) Bigger screen is better for me since I read math books and technical books with symbols that are even in epub form not even pdf.

Oops, sorry,but that is what you get when Barnes and nobles seemingly carelessly calls the two products the samething.

Anyway, what I said on encryption is probably still true except for my method for obtaining the key. Barnes and Noble is making it harder to get the key so if he did not previously attain the key for his account it is no walk in the park to get it for use with Apprentice Alf's DeDRM for B&N plugin for calibre.

If I remember right, when I originally set this up, this was based on your credit card somehow. I'll look into this again when (if) it becomes necessary. I'm guessing it will because I do want to buy from someone other than Amazon (at least part of the time). Thanks.

I guess Amazon got the ball rolling on that with all their "All new" same names. I wish Barnes & Noble hadn't copied them though.

Hopefully I'll be able to figure it out when the time comes. I'm hoping the key can still (?) be transferred to Calibre on Linux (once obtained).

As for Google ... never going to send another penny to them. But I might buy books from Feedbooks or others, so I guess I'm going to have to figure out how to decrypt "standard" (non Kobo or Nook) Adobe DRM on Linux. I think once you get the key you can move it to a Linux computer. But maybe I'm wrong about that also. (I'm trying to avoid Wine.)

You can probably get the key with adb and fastboot from a file on your nook that is how I did it with the gl3 and once you do it for one device it works for all nooks, obviously, as it relies on your general account and not a single device. As far as the other more general encryption using adobe DRM I know of no way to do that for linux and last time I checked adobe does not release adobe digital editions on linux. Adobe digital editions may not even work on wine , either, as it does not work with all windows apps. In addition to this in order to still crack it one has to use an older version of ADE. You might find yourself running windows in a virtual box. I have linux on a laptop and an older PC computer with windows 10 , in the basement, I try to keep windows around as Linux can't do everything it is just an OS not an application suite.

Tell me about it. I bought a Surface Pro 2017, (aka: the one where Microsoft decided not to call it a Surface Pro 5 for no damn good reason at all). I've been looking to replace the keyboard cover on it, but not all Surface Pro Type Covers fit all Surface Pros.

I got lucky on my Surface, installing the Windows 10 Nook app, Calibre seemed to have no trouble finding the Nook key. That seems to work for some, but not for others. And won't help recntros at all on Linux.

Yeah, years ago, the ability to strip DRM from Nook books just suddenly stopped working. B&N changed their DRM with no announcement.

Check Alf's blog. If you have a key already, there's likely a way to transfer it. Not sure how though.

I'm guessing it will because I do want to buy from someone other than Amazon (at least part of the time). Thanks.

Why isn't Kobo an option to buy from? Do they not have a good option on Linux? Or is there some philosophical reason?

I've intended to move to Linux numerous times over the years and really did my homework. But then Windows 10 came along and convinced me to stick with Windows. It's far and away the best version of Windows I've ever used.

I guess I would have to use Wine on Linux to run ADE. (If it can still be made to work.) I do have Vista Windows partition on my laptop and that's what I've used for the few encrypted ePubs I've bought recently (I've been mostly shopping on Amazon because its easy to decrypt Kindle books). When I borrow from the library (with Overdrive) I just use one of my Tolinos for ePubs, they have ADE built-in.

There's instructions on installing ADE 2.x in Wine but I've never got around to doing it. I really don't want Wine on my Linux computers.

If worse comes to worse I can probably do it on one of my wife's Windows 10 computers. But I would rather not if I can avoid it.

Kobo is one option, but I would like to have more. I'm not that thrilled with Kobo's bookstore, the Nook store seems "cleaner."

My wife's laptop runs Windows 10. It's an HP (supposedly a "gamer" laptop, but game players would laugh at it). I bought it because it came with an i7 CPU and has decent specs. One time it did fail to boot and I fought it for about a week ... then finally just used Linux Live USB to back up all my wife's files and then rebuilt it from scratch. I think in this case, though, we might have had a power outage right when it was in the act of updating. (And why does Windows take so damn long to update?) I can install and update Linux in 40 minutes (from scratch) and that includes all codecs and applications.

Sounds like you've just been unlucky with Windows. I've never had any major glitches, BSODs, refusals to boot etc. in all the years I've used it, on various laptops, low-end and high-end. Neither have I ever had to reinstall it. And I'm not the type of user who only uses their PC for internet and e-mail and leaves everything else as is. I've busily installed/uninstalled programs, changed various registry entries and so on. Perhaps I've just been uncommonly lucky.

Windows updates have never taken particularly long either, certainly a lot less than 40 minutes.

That's basically all my wife does with her computers, except she needs them for her Power Point presentations for the classes she teaches. I think most of the issues on the laptop come from the "Home Premium" version of Windows 10 that came with the laptop. One of these days I'll rebuild it using Windows 10 Pro.

As for upgrades ... As far as I can remember they almost always require at least one reboot. And you get the "don't shut your computer down" messages. Then there's the anti-virus and malware maintenance (unnecessary on Linux.) I do run ClamAV to make sure I haven't picked up any viruses that (though they won't effect me) can be passed on to Windows users. So far I've never had any.

I've never installed any anti-virus or malware maintenance software and use the stuff that Microsoft provides with Windows 10. And that seems to be the consensus on the windows 10 subreddit on reddit.

As a former Unix sysadmin my standard rant is that for servers, Unix, be it Linux, Solaris, or whatever, is the only intelligent and reasonable OS for a server.

For the desktop, for the average user, linux is more trouble than it's worth unless you're a geek and like to play around and want to learn linux. Even if you're a geek and want to explore linux I'd recommend keeping Windows on your desktop and get a raspberry PI for playing with/exploring linux; they're dirt cheap and made for that.

I think you may be thinking of Desktop Linux from fifteen to twenty years ago. Now you just download a Linux iso image, burn it to a CD or USB thumb drive, and you can install a fully functional Linux desktop (with all applications, codecs, drivers Flash, etc), completely installed and upgraded in about 35 minutes. And, if you pick something like Linux Mint, desktop users won't even hardly know it's not Windows, except the icons will look different.
