I've read his Suicide Forest and liked that well enough. He tends to label his books as series, but from what I've seen, the books are all stand-alones that follow a theme (Suicide Forest was first in the World's Scariest Places series that focused on actual places with a creepy history). I guess that could make his books formulaic. I've only read one, so I can't say.
One of my favourite Horror authors! Grabbed this one, thanks!

Wendigo by Vaughn C. Hardacker is $1.99 at Amazon US

Quote:
Ancient horrors comes to life in “a chilling supernatural thriller to be read . . . with all the lights on and the doors and windows locked” (Kennebec Journal).

Algonquin legend tells of the Wendigo, an evil, cannibalistic spirit reborn in winter to possess and punish mankind. For John Bear, the Wendigo is merely a scary story his grandfather used to tell him. Until a local man is found dead in the deep northern woods of Maine, butchered like an animal with his heart cut out. The only tracks are massive footprints that can’t possibly be human. John is sure that what’s stalking the inhabitants of their remote outpost is a Wendigo, even if no one else believes him. When they finally do, it’s going to be too late.

Hardacker, two-time finalist for the Maine Literary Award, “gets it all right—the bone-chilling cold of the north woods, the isolation and loneliness, the quirky characters, the constant peril—and tops it off with a tense hunt for a killing legend” in this hair-raising thriller of mythic monsters and endless bloodlust (Dale T. Phillips, author of the Zack Taylor mysteries).

^ I don't need no stinkin' lights on. My ebook reader already has a front light!

My doors are always locked. I live in Peru. (Not that there's anything wrong with that.)

Little Whispers by Glen Kirsch - Amazon US $0.99

It's a time to say goodbye.

Krista Forrester and her family return to her childhood lake house to say goodbye to her dying grandfather. His last wish is to spend his final days surrounded by family. It's a time to reminisce, a time for togetherness and love. But the family's return awakens both forgotten memories and the unsettled spirits tied to the land.

Sometimes memories are better left buried.

Krista never wanted to return to the lake house. She hasn't been back since Breann, her childhood friend, disappeared from the sandy beach right outside her back door. Her disappearance left behind both lingering sorrow and many unanswered questions. Was Breann a victim of a now-convicted serial killer? Will Krista and her family succumb to the evil bound to the lake house? Is Breann still somewhere close, waiting to be discovered? What are those melancholic little whispers Krista hears in the middle of the night?

Only by confronting the tragedies of the past can Krista guarantee her family's future.

The House by the Cemetery by John Everson
Link: Amazon US $0.99

Rumor has it that the abandoned house by the cemetery is haunted by the ghost of a witch. But rumors won’t stop carpenter Mike Kostner from rehabbing the place as a haunted house attraction. Soon he’ll learn that fresh wood and nails can’t keep decades of rumors down. There are noises in the walls, and fresh blood on the floor: secrets that would be better not to discover. And behind the rumors is a real ghost who will do whatever it takes to ensure the house reopens. She needs people to fill her house on Halloween. There’s a dark, horrible ritual to fulfill. Because while the witch may have been dead... she doesn’t intend to stay that way.

Hey, thanks for that! I just finished John Everson's Covenant (looks like it's on sale for $1.49) earlier this week. Enjoyed it.

He has another book listed at $0.99: NightWhere

Quote:
She yearned to go beyond... but some curtains should never be opened.

When Rae broached the idea of visiting an underground sex club, Mark didn't blink. He should have. Because NightWhere is not your usual swingers club. Where it's held on a given night...only those who receive the red invitations know. And the mysterious Watchers who guard the club answer to something far more sinister than the calls of the flesh. Soon Rae is indulging in her lust for pain, moving closer to a threshold of unimaginable evil. And Mark is warned by a beautiful stranger to take his wife away before it's too late.

But it's already too late. Because Rae hasn't come home. Now Mark is in a race against time -- to find NightWhere again and save his wife from the Watchers and what they serve. To stop her from taking that last step through the degradations of The Red into the ultimate BDSM promise of The Black. More than just their marriage and her life are at stake: Rae is in danger of losing her soul...and more!

Anyone ever read Glen Krisch? He's new to me, but has written several novels and two are on sale for $0.99 each.

Where Darkness Dwells is set during the Great Depression, so that's something different

Quote:
During a hot summer night in 1934, tragedy strikes when two local boys search for the truth behind a local legend. They stumble upon the Underground, a network of uncharted caverns just below the surface of Coal Hollow. Time holds no sway in the Underground. People no longer age and their wounds heal as if by magic. By morning, one boy is murdered, while the other never returns home.

The Underground is hidden for a reason. Certain locals want to keep their lair secret, no matter the cost. Below a town struggling to survive both the Great Depression and the closing of the local coal mine, lives an immortal society built on the backs of slavery and pervasive immorality.
Little Whispers sounds a bit 'been there, done that.' But it has a great cover

Quote:
Krista Forrester and her family return to her childhood lake house to say goodbye to her dying grandfather. His last wish is to spend his final days surrounded by family. It's a time to reminisce, a time for togetherness and love. But the family's return awakens both forgotten memories and the unsettled spirits tied to the land.

I haven't picked them up yet, mainly because it's very late. I likely will though.

I show that I purchased this in 2012, but I've never read it and I've never heard of him.

It's number 2091 on my TBR list of 3000, so I'll read it when I'm dead - my ebook will be buried with me, along with a charger of course. ("I may be dead, but I'm not stupid!")*

I'll move it up if you convince me I should do so.

I bought both. Where darkness Dwells doubled in price to an outrageous $1.99. But since that sounds like the more interesting of the two, I bought it anyway.

They will probably be on a similar slot on my TBR pile.

I bounce back and forth on whether Weird Westerns are fun or just stupid.

Blood Riders by Michael P. Spradlin is $0.99 at Amazon US

Quote:
The Western Territories, 1880. For four years, Civil War veteran and former U.S. Cavalry Captain Jonas P. Hollister has been rotting in a prison cell at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. His crime: lying about the loss of eleven soldiers under his command . . . who he claims were slaughtered by a band of nonhuman, blood-drinking demons.

But now a famous visitor, the detective Allan Pinkerton, has arrived with an order for Hollister's release. The brutal murder of a group of Colorado miners in a fashion frighteningly similar to the deaths of Hollister's men has leant new credence to his wild tale. And suddenly Jonas Hollister finds himself on a quest both dangerous and dark—joining forces with Pinkerton, the gunsmith Oliver Winchester, an ex-fellow prisoner, a woman of mystery, and a foreigner named Abraham Van Helsing, who knows many things about the monsters of the night—and riding hell for leather toward an epic confrontation . . . with the undead.
I think I would prefer not name-dropping Pinkerton, Winchester and Van Helsing.

Anyway, it's published by HarperCollins, so I expect more of it than if it were an indie book.

I always like Westerns/horror, snatching this. Pretty good ratings and 400pgs.

The king of the Weird Western is Joe Lansdale. You might want to check out two of his books: Dead in the West and Deadman's Crossing.

They are stories about the not-so-good Reverend Jebidiah Mercer battling monsters in the Old West.

Another author I like, Eric Red has a couple: The Guns of Santa Sangre and The Wolves of El Diablo

(These aren't on sale right now. Just a heads' up if you wanna add them to ereaderiq.)
