A Deadly Shade of Gold is the fifth in the Travis McGee series by John D MacDonald. It has dropped to $1.99 at Kindle and Kobo US. Titles in this series don't go on sale very often in the US and are quite expensive when not on sale, so grab it if you want it.

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/Deadly-Shade-...dp/B008WONRBK/
Kobo US: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/a-deadly-shade-of-gold

Spoiler:
Quote:
When Travis McGee discovers a face from his past lying in a pool of blood on a cheap motel room floor, he wants answers. But so far, all he has are questions--plus the dubious inheritance of his friend's vengeance-driven girlfriend, and a valuable ancient Aztec golden idol. Part rebel, part philosopher, and every inch his own man, Travis McGee plunges into a wild and perilous trek for a killer that takes him from the Lauderdale beaches to the seething corruption of American expatriates in a distant Mexican town, to the lush high life of the California jet set.

The Grave's a Fine and Private Place is the next to most recent (9th of 10) in the Flavia de Luce series by Alan Bradley. It has dropped to $1.99 at Kindle and Kobo US, and my "Kindle Wish List Credit" (see this thread), which is good for a few more hours, shows that it will work on this title, so I'm getting it for free. Woo-hoo!

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B071VHV946
Kobo US: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/the...rivate-place-2

Spoiler:
Quote:
NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • “The world’s greatest adolescent British chemist/busybody/sleuth” (The Seattle Times), Flavia de Luce, returns in a twisty mystery novel from award-winning author Alan Bradley.

In the wake of an unthinkable family tragedy, twelve-year-old Flavia de Luce is struggling to fill her empty days. For a needed escape, Dogger, the loyal family servant, suggests a boating trip for Flavia and her two older sisters. As their punt drifts past the church where a notorious vicar had recently dispatched three of his female parishioners by spiking their communion wine with cyanide, Flavia, an expert chemist with a passion for poisons, is ecstatic. Suddenly something grazes her fingers as she dangles them in the water. She clamps down on the object, imagining herself Ernest Hemingway battling a marlin, and pulls up what she expects will be a giant fish. But in Flavia’s grip is something far better: a human head, attached to a human body. If anything could take Flavia’s mind off sorrow, it is solving a murder—although one that may lead the young sleuth to an early grave.

Tyler Dilts, an author I enjoyed, has all five of his books on sale for $0.99 a piece.

Four are a series called Long Beach Homicide:
  1. A King of Infinite Space
  2. The Pain Scale
  3. A Cold and Broken Hallelujah
  4. Come Twilight

And a standalone
Mercy Dogs

I very much enjoyed his books and wish he would write more.

The third title in this series, Smoke and Ashes, is now on sale for $1.99 at Kindle US as part of the Daily Deal today. I still haven't gotten around to reading the first one, which was on sale a while ago at Kindle UK, but am tempted to get the third one anyway...

Spoiler:
Quote:
Captain Sam Wyndham and his sidekick Surrender-Not Banerjee return in this prize-winning historical crime series set in 1920s Calcutta.

India, 1921. Haunted by his memories of World War I, Captain Sam Wyndham is battling a serious addiction to opium that he must keep secret from his superiors in the Calcutta police force.

When Sam is summoned to investigate a grisly murder, he is stunned at the sight of the body: he’s seen this before. Last night, in a drug addled haze, he stumbled across a corpse with the same ritualistic injuries. It seems like there’s a deranged killer on the loose. Unfortunately for Sam, the corpse was in an opium den—and revealing his presence there could cost him his career.

With the aid of his quick-witted Indian Sergeant, Surrender-Not Banerjee, Sam must try to solve the two murders, all the while keeping his personal demons secret, before somebody else turns up dead.

And now the second title in the series, A Necessary Evil, has also dropped to $1.99 at Kindle US. Sadly, the first title is a pretty punishing $10.30, so hopefully you snagged it from Kindle UK a while back if you wanted it.

India, 1920. Captain Wyndham and Sergeant Banerjee of the Calcutta Police Force investigate the dramatic assassination of a Maharajah's son, in the sequel to A Rising Man.

The fabulously wealthy kingdom of Sambalpore is home to tigers, elephants, diamond mines, and the beautiful Palace of the Sun. But when the heir to the throne is assassinated in the presence of Captain Sam Wyndham and Sergeant 'Surrender-Not' Banerjee, they discover a kingdom riven with suppressed conflict. Prince Adhir was a modernizer whose attitudes—and romantic relationships—may have upset the more religious elements of his country, while his brother—now in line to the throne—appears to be a feckless playboy.

As Wyndham and Banerjee desperately try to unravel the mystery behind the assassination, they become entangled in a dangerous world where those in power live by their own rules—and those who cross their paths pay with their lives. They must find a murderer, before the murderer finds them . . .

MJ Trow is the author of several historical mystery series, ranging (per SYKM) from fairly recent (19th century London) to quite ancient (Britain in CE 367). Now Trow has written a mystery set in first-century Rome - not sure if it will become a series or is a stand-alone. In any case The Year of the Snake: Murder in the Senate is a Countdown deal at both Kindle US (4 1/2 days) and Kindle UK (4 1/4 days) for $0.99 and £0.99 respectively.

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07FJ6JHZG/
Kindle UK: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Year-Snake-...dp/B07FJ6JHZG/

Spoiler:
Quote:
'Believable characters, a suitably intricate plot and immediate immersion into the treacherous world of Rome at the end of the first imperial dynasty.' - Mark Knowles, author of The Consul's Daughter

Sometimes, a snake is just a snake. And sometimes…

First-century Rome.

Senator Gaius Lucius Nerva is taken ill at a dinner party and dies a few days later. His heartbroken wife, Flavia, is told it was a natural death. Calidus, Nerva’s recently freed slave, suspects otherwise.

As he embarks upon the funeral ceremonies, Calidus becomes more and more convinced that his master was murdered and begins an investigation, seeking out everyone who had attended the dinner party.

His enquiries lead him to rub shoulders with the ‘great and good’ of Rome; senators, soldiers, even the ruthless and mercurial Emperor Nero. And his former lover, Julia Eusabia, who seems intent on rekindling their romance and luring him away from his wife and daughter.

Calidus’ quest is by no means easy or safe as he encounters the darkest and most dangerous people in Rome. But he knows he must keep searching for the person responsible, to bring justice to the master he had loved.
This racy historical whodunnit brings to life the sights, smells and sounds of ancient Rome, with sharp humour and a Christie-style finale to boot.

A Forgotten Place is the 10th and most recent (2018) in the Bess Crawford series by Charles Todd. It has dropped to $1.99 at Kindle and Kobo US.

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0756DXFBY
Kobo US: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/a-forgotten-place

Spoiler:
Quote:
Though the Great War has ended, Bess Crawford finds herself caught in deadly circumstances on a remote Welsh headland in this tenth entry from the acclaimed New York Times bestselling author.

The fighting has ended, the Armistice signed, but the war has left wounds that are still agonizingly raw. Battlefield Nurse Bess Crawford has been assigned to a clinic for amputees, and the Welsh patients worry her. She does her best to help them, but it’s clear that they have nothing to go home to, in a valley where only the fit can work in the coal pits. When they are released, she fears that peace will do what war couldn’t—take their lives.

Their officer, Captain Williams, writes to describe their despair, and his own at trying to save his men. Bess feels compelled to look into their situation, but the Army and the clinic can do nothing. Requesting leave, she quietly travels to Wales, and that bleak coal mining village, but she is too late.

Captain Williams’ sister tells Bess he has left the valley. Bess is afraid he intends to kill himself. She follows him to an isolated, storm-battered peninsula—a harsh and forgotten place where secrets and death go hand in hand. Deserted by her frightened driver, Bess is stranded among strangers suspicious of outsiders. She quickly discovers these villagers are hiding something, and she’s learned too much to be allowed to leave. What’s more, no one in England knows where she is.

Why is there no Constable out here? And who is the mysterious Ellen? Captain Williams and his brother’s widow are her only allies, and Bess must take care not to put them at risk as she tries to find answers. But there is a murderer here who is driven to kill again and again. And the next person in his sights is Simon Brandon, searching for Bess and unaware of his danger. . . .
