Veil of Lies is the first in the Crispin Guest series by Jeri Westerson. Just to help the moderator out, since this might appear self-pub for those not familiar with historical mystery authors/series, a single click on the "hardcover" button and paging down shows it to have been originally traditionally published before, presumably, the rights reverted to the author for this edition. In addition, just to cement its worthy-of-being-posted status, SYKM indicates it was a finalist for both the 2009 Macavity Award for Best Historical Novel and 2009 Shamus Award for Best First Novel.

Veil has dropped to $0.99 at Kindle and Kobo US (coupon/VIPable).

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/Veil-Crispin-...dp/B015QJ7QXS/
Kobo US: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/veil-of-lies-2

Spoiler:
Quote:
Crispin Guest has fallen far from his privileged position as a knight in medieval high society. Accused of treason, abandoned by former friends and allies, he has survived on the gritty streets of London by reinventing himself as “The Tracker”, a private investigator for hire who can locate lost objects or uncover the clandestine lives of people.

When the secretive, wealthy merchant Nicholas Walcote hires Guest to investigate his alluring young wife Philippa for adultery, he discovers a seedy underworld of covert dealings and violent men of mystery. Philippa is indeed hiding something and she’s not the only one. Guest soon learns that Walcote is rumored to be in possession of a mystical holy relic so powerful that some would even kill for it.

Guest must contend with his nemesis, Sheriff Simon Wynchcombe in the search for answers to the questions surrounding the mysterious Walcotes. With each new day comes another layer of intrigue and Guest quickly becomes entangled in a strange world of superstition, seduction, and murder.

With vivid detail, an unforgettable hero, and a complex, thrilling story, Veil of Lies was a finalist for the Macavity and Shamus awards, and the other novels in the Crispin Guest medieval noir series have been contenders for the Macavity, Agatha, Bruce Alexander Historical Mystery, and Romantic Times Reviewers' Choice awards.

EDIT: Sorry, this edition is no longer on sale either...literally a minute after I posted it, it went back up...

Acid Bath is the first in the Elena Jarvis series by Nancy Herndon. It has dropped to $1.99 at Kindle US, not matched at Kobo US, at least as of now. Use caution - there are two versions out there, and only one is on sale.

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00J90C5XW

Spoiler:
Quote:
Elena Jarvis is an officer committed to her duty at the Los Santos, Texas, Department of Crimes Against Persons. Not that anyone is helping her there, not when her ex-husband is in the next room, her boss treats her like a little girl and her partner thinks women shouldn't leave the kitchen. Elena always knew there would be obstacles in her job; she just figured they would come from the criminals. When an erotic poet accuses his ex-wife, Sarah, of trying to murder him with an exploding escargot, Elena has doubts of the reality of the crime. But the more she learns about their nasty divorce, the more she begins to side with Sarah, until she finds the poet's body decaying in a bathtub filled with more than just water. Before the acid eats away all the evidence, Elena must put aside her sympathies for the victimized ex-wife and get down to the bare bones of this murder before someone else becomes the next victim.

A mystery set on a pirate ship. The Bloody Black Flag by Steve Goble is $1.99 at Amazon US.

Quote:
1722--aboard a pirate ship off the American Colonial Coast.

Spider John Rush never wanted to be a pirate, but it had happened and he'd learned to survive in the world of cut and thrust, fight or die. He and his friend Ezra knew that death could come at any moment, from grapeshot or storm winds or the end of a noose. But when Ezra is murdered in cold blood by a shipmate, Spider vows revenge.

On a ship where every man is a killer many times over, how can Spider find the man who killed his friend? There is no law here, so if justice is to be done, he must do it. He will have to solve the crime and exact revenge himself.

One wrong step will lead to certain death, but Spider is determined to look into the dying eyes of the man who killed his friend, even if it means his own death.
There's a sequel called The Devil's Wind and that title just makes me smile. The Devil's Wind on a pirate ship must be pretty challenging. No beans for the crew!

A Man Called Intrepid: The Incredible True Story of the Master Spy Who Helped Win World War II USD1.99

Amazon:
https://www.amazon.com/Man-Called-In...ognizedsite-20

The classic real-life story of the superspy whose vast intelligence network helped defeat the Nazis in World War II.

A Man Called Intrepid is the account of the world’s first integrated intelligence operation and of its master, William Stephenson. Codenamed INTREPID by Winston Churchill, Stephenson was charged with establishing—and running—a vast, worldwide intelligence network to challenge the terrifying force of Nazi Germany. Nothing less than the fate of Britain and the free world hung in the balance as INTREPID covertly set about stalling the Nazis by any means necessary.

First published in 1976, A Man Called Intrepid was an immediate bestseller. With over thirty black-and-white photographs and countless World War II secrets, this book revealed startling information that had remained buried for decades. Detailing the infamous “Camp X” training center in Ontario, Canada; the miraculous breaking of the Ultra Code used by the Enigma Machine; and dozens of other stories of clandestine missions, A Man Called Intrepid is an undisputed modern classic.

The Gray and Guilty Sea: An Oregon Coast Mystery (Garrison Gage Series Book 1)

FREE on Amazon
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0049H92G8...4&_bbtype=blog

A curmudgeon. An iconoclast. A loner. That's how people describe Garrison Gage, and that's when they're being charitable.

After his wife's brutal murder in New York, and Gage himself is beaten nearly to death, the crippled private investigator retreats three thousand miles to the quaint coastal town of Barnacle Bluffs, Oregon. He spends the next five years in a convalescent stupor, content to bide his time filling out crossword puzzles and trying to forget that his wife's death is his fault. But all that changes when he discovers the body of a young woman washed up on the beach, and his conscience draws him back into his old occupation – forcing him to confront the demons of his own guilt before he can hope to solve the girl's murder.

I've read some of this series which I discovered via Overdrive library. I found the main character and stories entertaining but there were a number of mistakes that should have been caught in editing. It's been a while since I read them, but my recollection is that mistakes were in things like sentence structure/grammar.

One mistake that did stick in my mind was the description of a woman's shoes as "open-soled shoes" (surely the intention was "open-toed"?) It did seem like the last book I read had fewer errors than the earlier ones.

These books usually seems to be available for less than $5 each at the Google Play store.

In Robert A. Heinlein’s controversial Hugo Award-winning bestseller, a recruit of the future goes through the toughest boot camp in the Universe—and into battle against mankind’s most alarming enemy...

Johnnie Rico never really intended to join up—and definitely not the infantry. But now that he’s in the thick of it, trying to get through combat training harder than anything he could have imagined, he knows everyone in his unit is one bad move away from buying the farm in the interstellar war the Terran Federation is waging against the Arachnids.

Because everyone in the Mobile Infantry fights. And if the training doesn’t kill you, the Bugs are more than ready to finish the job...

I guess it's a 'mystery' why aliens and humans would want to engage in interstellar war!

Not that there's anything wrong with aliens!

Dog Soldiers by Robert Stone is $1.99 at Amazon US.

Quote:
National Book Award Winner: A “harrowing” novel of the Vietnam era filled with “white-knuckled suspense” (Time).

In Saigon during the waning days of the Vietnam War, a small-time journalist named John Converse thinks he’ll find action—and profit—by getting involved in a heroin shipment. But back in the States, things go horribly wrong.

From the New York Times–bestselling author of Damascus Gate, Dog Soldiers is “a dark descendant of Conrad’s and Hemingway’s adventure stories,” perfectly capturing the underground mood of America in the 1970s, when amateur drug dealers and hippies encountered profiteering cops and professional killers—and the price of survival was dangerously high (The New York Times Book Review).

Kingdom of the Blind is the 14th and most recent (until August) in Louise Penny's excellent IMO Inspector Gamache series. Actually it's not excellent just IMO, since every title in the series except one has been a finalist for at least three awards, and many titles have won one or more awards. Kingdom has dropped to £0.99 at Kindle UK.

The entrancing new crime thriller featuring Chief Inspector Armand Gamache, from number one New York Times bestselling author Louise Penny

'A wonderful addition to a fantastic series' Elly Griffiths

When Armand Gamache receives a letter inviting him to an abandoned farmhouse outside of Three Pines, the former head of the Sûreté du Québec discovers that a complete stranger has named him as an executor of her will.

Armand never knew the elderly woman, and the bequests are so wildly unlikely that he suspects the woman must have been delusional - until a body is found, and the terms of the bizarre document suddenly seem far more menacing.

But it isn't the only menace Gamache is facing. The investigation into the events that led to his suspension has dragged on, and Armand is taking increasingly desperate measures to rectify previous actions. As he does, Armand Gamache begins to see his own blind spots - and the terrible things hiding there . . .

A few people upthread have been happy about past free titles in the John Jordan series by Michael Lister, and here's another one. Blue Blood is the 20th in the series, and it is free right now at Kindle US. The freebies don't usually last very long so grab it now if you want it!

link: https://www.amazon.com/Blue-Blood-Jo...dp/B07JQN1LDW/

Spoiler:
Quote:
What would you risk to prevent a murder?

Private investigator Merrill Monroe enlists the services of detective John Jordan to protect Malia Goodman, a civil rights and police shooting activist with a target on her back.

But Merrill doesn’t just want John to help protect Malia, he wants him to find out who’s trying to kill her and help him stop them.

Malia is surrounded on all sides by suspects—rogue cops, homegrown terrorists, right-wing militants, and even some supposed friends very close to her—and Merrill wonders if even John Jordan, with his considerable skills and experience, can figure out who the killer is before it’s too late.

Can John save a life? What about the would-be killer’s very soul? Or is Malia fated to be another martyr for the cause of justice and equality?

Start Blue Blood now and find out today!

The fourth book in this much-loved (by me, at least ) series, The Mamur Zapt and the Men Behind, has dropped to £2.99 at Kindle UK.

link: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0758Z35YG

Spoiler:
Quote:
From the award-winning Michael Pearce comes an engrossing murder mystery set in the Cairo of the 1900s. After a series of attacks on public officials, the Mamur Zapt is called in to investigate.

Cairo in the 1900s. While riding home, Fairclough of Customs is shot at from behind. It is the first of many similar attacks – all seemingly aimed at public officials. The Mamur Zapt, British head of Cairo’s secret police, is told to catch the killer – and quickly.

His efforts to do so take him into Cairo’s student quarter and out to a remote rural estate. And require him to handle a fading Pasha and a dangerous gypsy girl – whose claims he has to balance against those of his fiery Egyptian mistress.

And the sixth one (below) is still at £1.99.
