Edit: tried to give you some more karma for all the help but it said I must "spread it around" a bit first. So you'll just have to settle for my thanks.

Hi David,

I don't think I have Java. When I ran Doitsu's

java -version

in the Windows 10 computer's cmd I got

'java' is not recognized as in internal or external command, operable program or batch file.

I looked in the programs and it wasn't there either.

I've heard some bad things about getting malware through Java, but they also said it was mostly happening in browsers. Since Sigil isn't a browser, do you think I'd be safe getting Java?

I would say you are safe installing Java. Most of the issues I've that were linked to Java were due to Javascript which is entirely different barrel of fish.

Also long ago when you installed java it automatically installed a plugin in the browser so you could run applets in the browser. That doesn't happen any longer.

If you're running Java apps off random websites, it is a risk. If running within your own system it's fine.
You can block Java in your firewall so it can't go on the internet if you like.

Thanks David. I'll give it a try. But now I'm reading about online vs offline installation. I suppose the online installation would be easier. And it seems to be all about installing Java in the browser. I just want it for Sigil. Does it make a difference (in regards to how I would install it)?

Thanks lumpy. I'm sure that's the case but I'm wondering in that it says "in order to enable Java in your browser." I just want it for Sigil.

Thanks Alan. I Google around about that and it seemed like all the entries were about allowing stuff through the firewall. https://www.google.com/search?client...utf-8&oe=utf-8

How would I block it and do I really need to or is that overkill? (I'm just planning on using Java for Sigil. But I guess if Java's in the browser and I'm going online via the browser it might be good to block it.)

If java tries to go outside to the internet Windows will pop up a dialog asking if you want to allow it. Just select whatever option it gives that allows access on your local network. Normally you won't ever see that dialog. The other direction, stuff coming in, can't do anything because you'd need to set up java to "listen" for incoming traffic.

Let's not wander too far beyond the purview of plugin support, here. Safe practices for java installation/operation are their own topic.

What happens when you try epubcheck 0.4.3.1 with 32-bit Java? If it does work, it could be that epubcheck was fixed to work with 32-bit Java.

The 0.4.1.3 epubcheck is working fine with 32-bit Java on my Windows 10 computer.

I've had a strange error message on 2 different files now when using the epubcheck plugin, if I check the same files with epubcheck outside of Sigil they validate and it seems unrelated to the file. Any idea what is causing it and how to fix / avoid it?

The error message says "Internal error. bk.href_to_id()failed for:" and then there is what looks like a temporary file name which is different each time.

See attached screenshots for examples.

This error message should only be displayed, if epubcheck didn't return a file name. Did you enable the usage option by any chance?

Yes I did enable that (very nice option, thank you). Why would epubcheck not return a file name? The files both have real names (of course) and also have titles in the content.opf. Is there some variable I might have accidentally triggered to cause epubcheck to "lose" the filename? I only started getting this error yesterday (maybe the day before, I forget, in any case it's very recent).
