BTW I ended up getting The Nest. Plan to eventually buy more of those Paperbacks from Hell as I get more money but man I've been spending a lot lately on books. Need to calm down lol
It must have been some kind of flash sale. Open Road sales are usually pretty short.

I don't want to oversell it like The Sentinel is a lost classic. I read it +10 years ago. But I do remember I really enjoyed it. If you catch it for $1.99, I'd recommend it.

How do we know that's not James Stewart on the cover?
I've not seen the cover on the right. Just the one with grandpa and a screaming(?) Jesus. I'm sure that was a die-cut cover back in the day. But my copy doesn't have that

Beyond Night by Eric S Brown (Amazon US $0.99)

Beyond Night is a Dark Fantasy Horror novel that pulls back the veil of nearly two thousand years of jaded history. Come tread in the bloody footprints left by monsters, soldiers and wizards and behold what lies hidden Beyond Night itself.

It’s Bigfoot War mixed with Lovecraftian horror on the edge of the Roman Empire.

How could Rome lose a Legion? What could’ve happened to blot out the existence of over five thousand men not only from history but the Earth itself?

As the Legion moves north to engage the forces of Pictdom, a dark horror emerges from the bowels of the Earth. Thought to be random attacks by hulking monsters, Decurion August soon learns a dire truth, that these bloody events are directed by opposing the wizards of the Picts. While one side assembles all tribes in a confederated army to battle the Legion, the other pulls these Greyman beasts from the depths of the Earth.

August fights not only these creatures and workers of magicks, but internal passions in the Legion itself.

Can he discover a way to survive the enormous bloodletting about to take place that will only serve to satisfy the wizards of Pictdom?

^ Crystal Lake Publishing has 8 or 10 titles for 99 cents each, according to my email from them this morning. Unfortunately, I had to use the email to clean up some poop from my Pug.

Perhaps another enterprising lover of horror fiction can list those titles, hmmm?

Thanks for that. I remember thinking his book '48 also sounded very good, though I haven't read it yet.

I Am Legend by Richard Matheson is $1.99 at Amazon US.

The unofficial inspiration for Night of the Living Dead, it inspired countless books and movies and (arguably) the entire modern zombie genre. It's classified as a vampire story, but don't expect Dracula, Lestat or those sparkly Twilight guys. These are dirty, scroungy vampires that barely hold on to their humanity. They hide during the day and come out at night to harass the protagonist, who's barricaded himself inside his suburban house.

If you've seen the Will Smith movie, please don't hold it against the book.

Quote:
One of the most influential vampire novels of the 20th century, I Am Legend regularly appears on the "10 Best" lists of numerous critical studies of the horror genre. As Richard Matheson's third novel, it was first marketed as science fiction (for although written in 1954, the story takes place in a future 1976).

A terrible plague has decimated the world, and those who were unfortunate enough to survive have been transformed into blood-thirsty creatures of the night. Except, that is, for Robert Neville. He alone appears to be immune to this disease, but the grim irony is that now he is the outsider. He is the legendary monster who must be destroyed because he is different from everyone else. Employing a stark, almost documentary style, Richard Matheson was one of the first writers to convince us that the undead can lurk in a local supermarket freezer as well as a remote Gothic castle. His influence on a generation of bestselling authors--including Stephen King and Dean Koontz--who first read him in their youth is, well, legendary.

I just re-read I AM LEGEND about 2 weeks or so ago by using Overdrive from my Library.
Such a great story! Definitely worth the $1.99 asking price.

A shame none of the movies ever really got it right although I am a big fan of the 70's version entitled THE OMEGA MAN (even if parts of it are radically different).

From what I can remember, the Vincent Price The Last Man on Earth was fairly faithful. Matheson wrote at least part of the screenplay himself, but thought the movie was too amateurish, so he changed his name.

The movie's public domain. You can watch it on YouTube.
