I had been reading this series and made a start reading the last book but after reading the first chapter, I looked at Goodreads reviews which confirmed it was a departure from the normal mysteries and that most of the regulars weren't in it, so I stopped and returned it to the library.

For me this series has been hit-or-miss. I like the ones that are set in Absaroka County and feature the Sheriff and deputies working to solve local crimes. The ones where they go other places and/or focus on Walt's family issues are less appealing to me. I don't want to read about personal vendettas.

Sara Paretsky's 17th V.I. Warshawski title, Brush Back, was on sale a year or so ago at Kindle UK. Now it has dropped in price to $1.99 at Kindle and Kobo US.

Quote:
Chicago’s V. I. Warshawski confronts crooked politicians and buried family secrets in this gritty mystery from New York Times bestselling author Sara Paretsky.

No one would accuse V. I. Warshawski of backing down from a fight, but she’d happily avoid tangling with Chicago political bosses. Yet that’s what she ends up doing when she responds to a plea for help from an old high school flame, Frank Guzzo.

Frank’s mother Stella was convicted of killing his kid sister, but now that she’s out of prison, she’s looking for exoneration. Even though the Warshawskis and Stella never got along, V. I. agrees to make a few inquiries after she sees how hard life has been on Frank and her other childhood friends.

Only, that small favor leads her straight into the vipers’ nest of Illinois politics—and soon her main question isn’t about Stella’s case but whether or not she’ll make it out of this investigation alive...

THE FINAL INSTALLMENT IN SUE GRAFTON'S ALPHABET SERIES

WINNER OF THE ANTHONY/BILL CRIDER AWARD FOR BEST NOVEL IN A SERIES

Private investigator Kinsey Millhone confronts her darkest and most disturbing case in this #1 New York Times bestseller from Sue Grafton.

In 1979, four teenage boys from an elite private school sexually assault a fourteen-year-old classmate—and film the attack. Not long after, the tape goes missing and the suspected thief, a fellow classmate, is murdered. In the investigation that follows, one boy turns state’s evidence and two of his peers are convicted. But the ringleader escapes without a trace.

Now, it’s 1989 and one of the perpetrators, Fritz McCabe, has been released from prison. Moody, unrepentant, and angry, he is a virtual prisoner of his ever-watchful parents—until a copy of the missing tape arrives with a ransom demand. That’s when the McCabes call Kinsey Millhone for help. As she is drawn into their family drama, she keeps a watchful eye on Fritz. But he’s not the only one being haunted by the past. A vicious sociopath with a grudge against Millhone may be leaving traces of himself for her to find...

Passport to Murder: Murder International is a compilation of 6 mystery titles, all of which are currently published by booksbnimble, which I consider a reputable e-publisher since they have editing staff and I have not had problems with their books. They publish a lot of titles where the rights have reverted to the author, but also some new stuff of their own. But if some moderator doesn't agree, then just go ahead and delete this whole post. Passport is free right now at Kindle US.

link: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01MXI3TZT

titles:
  • Return to Sender, by Dick Cluster
  • The Aura, by Carrie Bedford
  • Tablet of Destinies, by Rob Swigart
  • Fault Tree by Michaela Thompson, originally written using pen name Mickey Freedman
  • Venetian Mask, also by Thompson/Freedman, finalist for the 1988 Macavity Award for Best Novel
  • The 13th Fellow, by Tracy Whiting, which I've read and really liked, first in a short two book series, wish she would write more

Where exactly to put this series?

Oliver Pötzsch, author of the INCREDIBLE series, 'A Hangman's Daughter Tale' has volumes 2-7 for only 99 cents EACH. (The first volume is priced at $1.99)

If you enjoy mystery, horror, and a suspenseful read (all within an historical context), then I heartily recommend this series!

Available from Amazon U.S.A. Here's a link so you can take a look at them:

I've not run into Carrie Stuart Parks before, and she's not in SYKM, but the series sounds interesting - the protagonist, Gwen Marcey, is a forensic artist, and apparently Parks is herself a forensic artist, so she's writing what she knows. And the price is right - a HarperCollins published omnibus of the first three titles has dropped to $2.99 as the US Nook daily deal, matched at Kobo and Kindle US.

A Gwen Marcey Collection contains A Cry from the Dust, The Bones Will Speak, and When Death Draws Near.

Nook: https://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/a-c...=9780718088552
Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01CXE9VWI
Kobo US: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/a-g...cey-collection

Spoiler:
Quote:
A Cry from the Dust

When renowned forensic artist Gwen Marcey is recruited to reconstruct the faces of recently unearthed victims at Mountain Meadows, she isn’t expecting more than an interesting gig . . . and a break from her own hectic life.

But when Gwen stumbles on the ritualized murder of a young college student, her work on the massacre takes on a terrifying new aspect, and research quickly becomes a race against modern-day fundamentalist terror.

The Bones Will Speak

A killer with a penchant for torture has taken notice of forensic expert Gwen Marcey . . . and her daughter.

When Death Draws Near

Death has always been part of Gwen Marcey’s job. But when faced with her own mortality, everything takes on a different hue.

I'm not quite sure why I starting reading this title when my TBR list is so long - probably because the blurb/title indicate that it is (mostly) set in Paris, and I tend to like books set in France. But in any case, having started it, I couldn't put it down, and I'm not usually much of a thriller reader, so that's unusual for me. I believe this is the author's first thriller, and I hope he writes more. Oh, and the blurb says it was short-listed for the CWA International Dagger.

In any case, A Long Night in Paris (apa Unit 8200 in other languages than English) by Dov Alfon has dropped to £0.99 at Kindle UK again.

link: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0791J454C

Spoiler:
Quote:
From a former Israeli intelligence officer, comes the most realistic, thrilling and authentic thriller of the year.

Shortlisted for the CWA International Dagger.

"Breathlessly exciting" Marcel Berlins, The Times.

"Races along with pace and verve" Adam LeBor, Financial Times

"A genuinely thrilling espionage novel" John Williams, Mail on Sunday

"A is deeply enjoyable espionage thriller" Jake Kerridge, Daily Telegraph.

When an Israeli tech exec disappears from Charles de Gaulle airport with a woman in red, logic dictates youthful indiscretion. But Israel is on a state of high alert nonetheless. Colonel Zeev Abadi, the new head of Unit 8200's Special Section, just happens to have arrived on the same flight.

For Commissaire Léger of the Paris Police, all coincidences are suspect. When a second young Israeli from the flight is kidnapped, this time at gunpoint from his hotel room, his suspicions are confirmed - and a diplomatic crisis looms. As the race to identify the victims and the reasons behind their abductions intensifies, a covert Chinese commando team watches from the rooftops, while hour by hour the morgue receives fresh bodies from around Paris.

This could be one long night in the City of Lights.

Translated from the Hebrew by Daniela Zamir.

Magic by William Goldman is on sale for $1.99 at Amazon US.

Corky is a brilliant entertainer with a bright future ahead of him. He has good looks, many women, and enormous talent. He also had a secret and a certainty: a secret that must be hidden from his public at all costs; and a certainty that the dark forces of magic were out to destroy him.
