Looking for solution for syncing two Kobos
So I have two Kobos, a Kobo Glo HD and a Clara HD. I read the Clara at home and I use the Glo HD when at work and out and about. I guess you could call my Glo HD my "beater" ereader.

Anyways, I sideload almost all of my books because I despise DRM. Loading to both is pretty easy and I just try to remember where I'm at in a book when switching between the ereaders. I don't mind that they don't sync the last position on sideloaded books, it's just a small inconvenience.

However, I also do a lot of collections, etc on them both, I have a lot of different collections like Spenser, Lord Peter Wimsey, etc. Trying to maintain these on both is getting to be a bit of a pain and I was wondering if anyone knows of a solution to sync up the collections between the two devices? Do Calibre or the Kobo Utilities plug in have anything like this? I poked around in both, but didn't really see anything that jumped out at me other than an option to "backup the database" in the Kobo Utilities. Not sure how that works.

Collections works on Calibre & Kobo. I only create the "collections" on Calibre.
You have to make a custom column with collection name to book (You can select many books at once with Ctrl). In the driver you put the underlying name of the custom column.
You also have to have automatic metadata update.

A book in a series is only showing series and ordering the SECOND time you connect and change something, but collections work fine. Years ago they did on Kindle too, but Amazon broke that for marketing reasons.

So Kobo is fine I do it on N905C and Aura H2O (original H2O).

Finding a place between my Sony PRS350 (pocket) and Kobo H2O is no bother via search. Faster than WiFi lookups. I have WiFi off on everything unless I want to look up something in a book in Web or Wiki.

Just configure the collection management in whichever of the KoboTouch or KoboTouchExtended drivers you use (see the @ps67 posted), plug each device and let calibre do its stuff. Any book on both will automatically be put into the same collections.

You can sync reading positions using my Kobo Utilities plugin. But, it needs you to plug a device in, fetch the reading status and the plug the other in and push them there. It is a bit clumsy for day-to-day use to sync the devices.

The other step is getting the same books on the devices. For this, I use the Reading List plugin. I create a reading list for each device I have. When I get a new book, I put the book on the reading lists for the devices I want it on. When I connect the device, I sync the reading list for that device and the books are sent and put on the appropriate collections.

No. The drivers and Kobo Utilities plugins are specifically built to treat the Kobo devices as Kobo devices. If you are running other applications, you need to handle them separately. And, if you only use KOReader, I recommend that you disable the Kobo related drivers and either connect to the device as a folder, or use the user defined defined driver.

@stats: KOReader has a builtin sync feature, though, and interaction with Calibre on that front is planned .

Apologies for bumping this old thread, but is there now a better solution than syncing manually by connecting 2 kobo devices one after the other with calibre?

Also charges them.

Calibre management of nearly 1800 ebooks between an original Libra and a brand new Sage was far faster than WiFi "sync" of a "fresh" Kindle Oasis with Amazon; about 350 ebooks.

Right, but truly, the operation I'd envision to be most frequent is syncing the reading status/progress of the one book I'm reading, between devices. Ideally, the most automatically possible.
Could a daemon running on one kobo, getting a request from the network to mess with the kobo sqlite database and update the reading status/progress of a book, be a realistic idea? Or is the sqlite db locked when the ereader isn't USB mounted?

I know it's not automatic, but the highlighted bit is my most common usage case too, and I am finding it very straightforward. I have "push progress" assigned to a gesture, and once that's done, when I pick up my other Kobo and open the same book (with wifi on ofc), it does ask if I want to sync with the progress status most recently pushed.
