The first Longmire book, The Cold Dish by Craig Johnson is $1.99 at Amazon US.

I've not read Longmire yet, but I've been curious since the TV series came out.

Quote:
New York Times bestselling author Craig Johnson introduces Sheriff Walt Longmire of Wyoming’s Absaroka County. Johnson draws on his deep attachment to the American West to produce a literary mystery of stunning authenticity, and full of memorable characters. After twenty-five years as sheriff of Absaroka County, Walt Longmire’s hopes of finishing out his tenure in peace are dashed when Cody Pritchard is found dead near the Northern Cheyenne Reservation. Two years earlier, Cody has been one of four high school boys given suspended sentences for raping a local Cheyenne girl. Somebody, it would seem, is seeking vengeance, and Longmire might be the only thing standing between the three remaining boys and a Sharps .45-70 rifle.

With lifelong friend Henry Standing Bear, Deputy Victoria Moretti, and a cast of characters both tragic and humorous enough to fill in the vast emptiness of the high plains, Walt Longmire attempts to see that revenge, a dish best served cold, is never served at all.

I've borrowed and read the books and watched the series. I like the characters better in the books, though the latest book was more of a thriller than a mystery and I liked it much less than the others.

This and the TV Series felt like a Soap Opera.

The Raphael Affair is the first in the Jonathan Argyll/Flavia di Stefano series by Iain Pears, who is much better known, I think for his non-series title, An Instance of the Fingerpost. This is one of my top ten or fifteen favorite series, and I really wish Pears would write some more of these. Affair has dropped to £1.99 at Kindle UK.

link: https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00HY59D8E

Spoiler:
Quote:
First in the Italian art-history crime series featuring English dealer and sleuth Jonathan Argyll, from the author of the best-selling masterpiece 'An Instance of the Fingerpost'.

Flavia di Stefano is the kind of Italian beauty that art dealer Jonathon Argyll doesn't normally get to meet in his line of work. But, it turns out, all he had to do was get caught breaking into one of Rome's churches – for Flavia is the Art Theft officer tasked with interviewing Jonathon. A strange way to meet, perhaps, but then Jonathon has an even stranger tale to tell.

His claim that the church contains a lost classic, hidden under another painting, is treated with cautious scepticism. But when the picture first vanishes, then turns up in the hands of a British art dealer claiming it's a newly discovered Raphael, it's clear there's more to it than meets the eye. When vandalism is followed by murder, it's up to Jonathan and Flavia to discover just how much more – a quest for the true nature of a painting with a lethal history…

As I mention from time to time, Michael Pearce is one of my top four or five favorite mystery authors - I love both his Mamur Zapt series and his Dead Man series. The sixth book in the Mamur Zapt series, The Mamur Zapt and the Spoils of Egypt, which, per SYKM, won the 1993 Last Laugh Dagger Award, has just dropped to £1.99 at Kindle UK.

link: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0753Y2FXZ

Spoiler:
Quote:
Winner of the CWA Last Laugh Award, an irresistible historical mystery in which the Mamur Zapt investigates the illegal trade of antiquities in the Cairo of the 1900s.

Cairo, 1908. Captain Gareth Owen, the Mamur Zapt or head of Cairo’s Secret Police, turns his attention to the illegal trade of antiquities when Miss Skinner arrives. She’s a woman with the habit of asking awkward questions. But what is she doing looking for crocodiles? And mummified ones at that?

Owen’s new brief is to see that Egypt’s priceless treasures stay in Egypt. But when Miss Skinner narrowly escapes falling under a conveyance, Owen must labour to thwart killers and face an even graver problem: whether to ask the pasha's lovely daughter to marry him….

A Suspicion of Silver is the most recent (2018) in the Sir Robert Carey Mysteries series by P.F. Chisholm. I quite like this series and so am happy that it has dropped to £0.99 at Kindle UK.

link: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07CN8X664

Spoiler:
Quote:
A brand-new Sir Robert Carey mystery, perfect for fans of C.J. Sansom and S.J. Parris.

Sir Robert Carey, Deputy Warden of the West March, has just foiled a double plot to assassinate King James. Now he rides for Leith hunting the would-be killer Joachim Hochstetter. Has he taken ship for the Continent, or ridden south for England and, quite literally, gone to ground?

Originally from Augsburg, Hochstetter's family runs a smelting business in Keswick amid a colony of German miners. Just how far would they go to protect one of their own?

Sir Robert's other problem? His dour, difficult Sergeant, Henry Dodd, has disappeared somewhere on the snowy moors. They found his horse... but there's no sign of the rider. Sir Robert's searches will see him sorely tested, both above and below ground, at sword's point and at fuse's end...

'Chisholm displays a masterful hand ... A resoundingly satisfying conclusion and a terrific hook. I have never loved Sir Robert more' DANA STABENOW.

A bunch of recent price drops at Kindle US on titles in Donna Leon's excellent IMO Commissario Brunetti series, to prices ranging from $2.99 to $3.99 each. There are also a number of titles that have been at $1.99 to $3.99 for a while, so I've done the link to pick up the $1.99 ones as well.

Right now sixteen titles are at these prices, so if you want to fill in some gaps, this is a good time to take a look...I was able to fill in the single remaining title I needed, other than the most recent title, which has yet to go on sale.

Kindle US: http://www.amazon.com/gp/search/?sea...price-asc-rank

Right now, only one of these shows at sale price at Kobo US, where they are coupon/VIPable - Acqua Alta, apa Death in High Water: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/acqua-alta-13

Shutter Island by Dennis Lehane is $1.99 at amazon.com: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000JMKNV0
Quote:
The basis for the blockbuster motion picture directed by Martin Scorsese and starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Shutter Island by New York Times bestselling author Dennis Lehane is a gripping and atmospheric psychological thriller where nothing is quite what it seems. The New York Times calls Shutter Island, “Startlingly original.” The Washington Post raves, “Brilliantly conceived and executed.” A masterwork of suspense and surprise from the author of Mystic River and Gone, Baby, Gone, Shutter Island carries the reader into a nightmare world of madness, mind control, and CIA Cold War paranoia and is unlike anything you’ve ever read before.

The Subtle Serpent is the fourth in the excellent (IMO) Sister Fidelma series by Peter Tremayne. It has dropped to $2.99 at Kindle and Kobo US. Titles in this series don't drop in price very often, in the US, at least, so grab it if you want it.

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/Subtle-Serpen...dp/B007NKMUCQ/
Kobo US: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/the-subtle-serpent-1

Spoiler:
Quote:
In the year 666 A.D., a headless female corpse is found in the drinking well of a remote abbey in southwest Ireland: clasped in one hand is a crucifix; tied to the other arm is a pagan death symbol. Sister Fidelma--sister to the king of Muman, a religieuse, and an advocate of the Brehon law courts--is sent to investigate. En route, she encounters a Gaulish merchant ship under full sail off the Irish coast--one whose crew and cargo have vanished without a trace.

Faced with a tense local situation, Fidelma must discover first the identity of the body in the well and uncover who was responsible, then find out what happened to the missing crew of the adrift merchant ship, and, finally, determine how these bizarre events are connected. For these events are more than simply disturbing--the peace of the entire kingdom rests upon their solution.

A Burnable Book by Bruce Holsinger is $1.99 at Amazon US.

Quote:
In Chaucer's London, betrayal, murder, royal intrigue, mystery, and dangerous politics swirl around the existence of a prophetic book that foretells the deaths of England's kings. Bruce Holsinger's A Burnable Book is an irresistible historical thriller reminiscent of the classics An Instance of the Fingerpost, The Name of the Rose, and The Crimson Petal and the White.

London, 1385. Surrounded by ruthless courtiers--including his powerful uncle, John of Gaunt, and Gaunt's artful mistress, Katherine Swynford--England's young, still untested king, Richard II, is in mortal peril, and the danger is only beginning. Songs are heard across London--catchy verses said to originate from an ancient book that prophesies the end of England's kings--and among the book's predictions is Richard's assassination. Only a few powerful men know that the cryptic lines derive from a "burnable book," a seditious work that threatens the stability of the realm. To find the manuscript, wily bureaucrat Geoffrey Chaucer turns to fellow poet John Gower, a professional trader in information with connections high and low. Gower discovers that the book and incriminating evidence about its author have fallen into the unwitting hands of innocents, who will be drawn into a labyrinthine conspiracy that reaches from the king's court to London's slums and stews--and potentially implicates his own son. As the intrigue deepens, it becomes clear that Gower, a man with secrets of his own, may be the last hope to save a king from a terrible fate.

Medieval scholar Bruce Holsinger draws on his vast knowledge of the period to add colorful, authentic detail--on everything from poetry and bookbinding to court intrigues and brothels--to this highly entertaining and brilliantly constructed epic literary mystery that brings medieval England gloriously to life.
