I dunno, I admit, that one somewhat makes sense to me; everybody here has had a run-in with someone, in business or otherwise, that used physical intimindation--leaned into you, or the like. (I once knew a guy that was 6'7", who used his height as a weapon, and it really torqued my butt when he did that. I mean, I'm not horribly short for a woman--5'9, although closer to 5'8" now, and I got so d@mned mad about it one time in a meeting that I jumped up on a chair to get up in his face. Ha, the enthusiasm of youth...)

Le'see figger figger 5'9" plus 1'6" of chair makes uh.. seven feet three inches.
Why that's EIGHT inches you had on him! Talk about physical intimidation.

Here's one, Leaning Into What Scares You. Far as I can tell it means the same as Face Up To

At first, I assumed 'leaning in' was what 'leaners' do, as opposed to what 'lifters' do. Traditionally we have referred to the two groups as 'bludgers' and 'battlers'. However, certain politicians, journalists, and other so-called 'influencers' have started using 'leaners' and 'lifters'. For a while I thought a 'leaner' was someone who put their shoulder to the wheel, and a 'lifter' was someone who stole things. I still don't really get why a 'bludger' is a 'leaner' - maybe it means up against a wall - but that's something else


BTW: my use of 'RTFM' was prompted by three consecutive responses I posted in the Calibre forum in as many minutes, with something like: "See ==> calibre User Manual: Keyboard shortcuts." I did get some karma for one of them.

I was REALLY MAD. I mean, that jackass leaned over me, thinking that I'd back down. Ixnay on that, man.

5'9" is actually about average for a man, I believe, you're about 5 inches above average for a woman, I think. But I digress.

You know, I just don't think I'm that tall. 5'4" seems rather small to me. I'd assume that 5'6-7" was more the median. Don't know; I haven't looked it up.

In the last couple of years I've heard "lean into it" used several times in the context of dealing with a difficult situation. Doesn't really make sense to me.

Don't know what the official average height for women is - know it varies by country and ethnicity. As a 5'5" white woman in the US I've always considered myself medium height. I'd say generally the women of my acquaintance range from barely over five feet to just under six feet. I figure anything from around 5'5" to 5'7" would be medium height. I would consider 5'9" tall but not exactly a giant.

My ex-wife was 6'4", luckily I was married to her in the '70s-'80s and platform shoes and high heeled cowboy boots were in vogue, and I could bring my rather puny 6'1" up to nearly match her.

(At one point in my life, a long, long time ago and far away, I was working in the fashion biz, and I was 1-2" shorter than all the rest. I was considered "short," although size-wise, I was dead on. I guess I still don't think of myself as "tall" due to that period in my formative years, LOL!)

It's funny, as I age, I am 60, I'm still at 5' 3", but now my MIL, who was always my height, is shrinking to well below 5". I just hemmed 13 pairs of pants for her, to a 23" inseam.

My mom is also shorter than she used to be, but not as drastically as my MIL. Both gals turn 89 this year, and both still live on their own. (My MIL gets lots of help with food & laundry)

Maybe not, but I bet she has a hard time finding a pair of pants that she wouldn't have to hem up!

Yeah, at 5'2" it's hard to find pants you don't have to hem or jeans you don't have to roll up. Even when you buy petite sizes.
