I occasionally have this fantasy where I scan all the cookery books, organise a database for the recipes, then just keep an old laptop in a corner of the kitchen for reading them.

This is not likely to happen, because life is too short.

There was once this house building program on tv here. And they were showing the kitchen. With a computer built in (including screen) for the recipes...

There is already a lot or recipe software out there and millions of recipes for them. This software will even let you input a list of some ingredients that you have and show you recipes that would work for them. They also allow you to create meal plans and the a shopping list for the week.

There is also the MiBook which has video recipes on it.

So, there you go..l you don't need to do any scanning of any cookbooks. You can have what you want for the price of a Kitchen PC. Since this software isn't very CPU intensive and old cheap PC will work just fine.

There is a fridge with a screen on its door and a scanner that monitors what and when you put in produce. Press on a button and a list of recipes come to the screen of what you can prepare with the contents. If a produce is about to go stale, it can tell you.

If a "Marcus Marc I" was created, I would be forced to destroy it and perform some revisionist history "with extreme prejudice", to erase all reality of it from the timeline. Come to think, if it was even a "Marc Marc I" I would probably do that too. My brainpan...boiling...snakes. All copies will be met and vanquished on a battlefield of my choosing, with conclusion pre-drawn inside the spheres of the heavens by my own machines. The first rule of Ape Club: I win. There is a small room off the entry hall of the house that is identified in the original builder's brochure for the house as "library" and it has a 6' (H) by 8' (W) built in shelving that we use for cookbooks. It is full and spilling onto the floor. This is one type of pbook that we are not likely to replace.
I am waiting on the new Mac Mini to get a computer into a kitchen cupboard that I can hook up to a monitor/TV on the wall, so that The Loved One can lookup new recipes, or ones I will scan from his books, or have found on the web already and saved. Currently he's always wandering over to my iMac to look things up, and I think he'd like this kind of access (and also the ability to watch his stories while slaving over a hot stove for my comfort).

One estimate gives pbooks an R value of 10 for insulation. Thus removing pbooks from exterior walls may make the home colder in winter and warmer in summer. All this will increase your electric/gas/oil bill.
Just stuff your bookcases full of pink batts (that is, insulation, though if you want to use Battus Pinkus instead, the flying kind, I suggest a staple-gun, chainmail gloves, and a relaxed attitude towards contraction of the lyssavirus).

I think I need another scanner.
I've only the one (an Epson Perfection 4990), and it's booked solid for old negative and slide scanning for about the next two years.

Ouch !
I hope it doesn't happen for our library.
The shelves look sturdy, but we should rearrange things a bit so the books don't overflow too much.

I saw the perfect scanner today for this job...

They had some old books on the scanners today... And they looked good!

(I only think you need a big purse...)

Do make sure your shelves are well supported, and attach the bookshelves to the walls as well. This way you don't have to worry about them, and all your books, falling on you if the ground gets shaky or if the hypothetical kid decides to climb them.[/QUOTE]

The shelves are already attached to the walls, this is the first thing we did before loading them with books.
We are going to move some of the shelves soon, so we'll check them thoroughly at the same occasion.

The Decameron is medieval, about 11th century more or less, not 1800's. Boring as you can ever imagine. Canterbury Tales is a much more interesting read, a bit younger than Decameron, but along the same lines with the travelers telling tales, but more lively.

When I was saying 18xx, I meant the actual date the book was produced, not the date the story was written.
