Two tomes and a pamphlet from Amazon.com.

Diarmaid MacCulloch - The Reformation for $4.99. 884 pages.

Rod Dreher - The Benedict Option: A Strategy for Christians in a Post-Christian Nation for $1.99. A mere 269 pages. This is a Great on Kindle book.

Free--The Babylonian Talmud, the superlative 10-volume translation by Michael L. Rodkinson, first published in 1918.

Perhaps you can find this work in other places on the Internet. But I don't know that you could find another free set produced so well, with a clickable TOC, and in the public domain.

This 3,225-page work comes courtesy of The Ultimate Bible Reference Library.

Here's the link.

I caught the joke, if it is a joke. If you really think that Benedict is a pamphlet, you have mighty high standards. I'll throw a joke back at you: there are two outrageously-priced tomes, and one reasonably priced.

I would grab Benedict, if I didn't have such a backlog of audiobooks to listen already. I put it on my wish list, but it's one whose content can rapidly go out of date.

I was in a physical book store today. Tyndale is trying out a new concept by combining a print NLT Bible with a mobile app (Android or iOS). The idea is that the paper Bible is for reading and the study material is in the app. The app is keyed to page numbers, so you can use the phone/tablet camera to scan a page number and bring up study notes and devotionals for the page you scanned.

The app is free and you can navigate without the camera after setup, but you have to scan a particular page number as part of a tutorial. I'm guessing that it was originally meant as a sort of proof that you have the paper Bible, but I don't think it's a big secret anymore since I brought home a promotional brochure and bookmark that both had the page number with "scan here" and an invitation to try out the app.

The study notes and devotionals are available offline, but videos and maps require an active internet connection.

Interesting concept.

I see a couple of potential issues, but perhaps they can be ironed out.

Thanks for sharing that information--I don't know if anyone else would have come across the display (I don't know if there are any B&M religious bookstores anymore, say within 25 miles of here, for example. I think that Amazon may have put all of them out of business).

I know some people who prefer using their print bibles, and sort of look down on those of use who prefer digital. But many who have switched to using digital most of the time, did so because the thin paper used in most bibles allows a lot of "bleed through" making it even hard to read the typically small print.

The notes are usually even smaller in font size, so this method of using an app for the notes may work well for some. To me, it seems like it would be awkward.

A well formatted study bible on a tablet device can be a wonderful tool when studying. Online bibles offer many other benefits as well. I use blueletterbible dot com, because I like the built in ability to access a Strong's Concordance for individual word look-ups.

Of course, which translation a person prefers has a great deal to do with this.

More ways to help people study is a good thing.

Even the store I went to (a local Parable Christian book store) has shifted away from books. The owner and I have talked and she said that Bibles and devotionals still sell pretty well, but "regular" books don't. She invested in a laser engraving system that can be run while a customer waits and most of her business is now last-minute gifts.

FREE Creation/Worldwide Flood Vacation Destination Brochures Pack!

Get a "Vacation Destination Brochures Pack" free, courtesy of Answers in Genesis. This pack is regularly priced at $4.99.

Would you like to take a family vacation to a famous destination? Are you tired of all of the evolutionary/millions-of-years explanations you get from the official tour guides? Would you like a great witnessing tool that makes people think? Then take a look at our brochure pack, which explains each destination from a biblical viewpoint . . . .

Beautifully illustrated and clearly written, these brochures show that real science confirms the biblical account of creation and a global Flood. Use them to educate yourself and your family and as a tool to show others that the Bible can be trusted!

There are many locations covered by the brochures that I had never associated with either the creationism/worldwide flood position. I am anxious to see what those brochures, especially, are all about. Here are the locations covered by the brochures in the pack:
- Dinosaur National Monument in Utah.
- Petrified Forests in Yellowstone.
- White Cliffs of Dover.
- Ayers Rock in Australia.
- Cave Formations.
- Giant's Causeway of Northern Ireland.
- Mount St. Helens in Washington State.
- Niagara Falls in North America.
- Grand Canyon in Arizona.
- Devil's Tower in Wyoming.

Agree or disagree with the contents of these brochures, I think that you have to agree that this is a clever way of presenting the creationist/worldwide flood message.

The brochures are all in the PDF format.

Here's the direct link to the pack. Use code MEMORIAL19 at checkout.

Evolution Impossible, by Dr. John F. Ashton. $2.99 (sale price). Great ratings. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B008GUMR84.

I listened to the audio book recently. I'm extrapolating about the book, in my comments below, based upon listening to the audio book.

The gist of the book is that the odds of each individual part of a one-celled organism coming together, by chance, to create that complete one-celled organism, are so high as to render it impossible. And then the problem exists that it still is not living, it's dead. "Man," has not, despite effort, been able to make something alive that is dead. I would argue against biological evolution on other grounds, but some people might find the author's line of reasoning completely convincing.

In a chapter toward the end of the book, the author presents testimonials by people to things that happened in their lives that ostensibly prove to them the existence of God. Without commenting upon the helpfulness or validity of testimonials for the purpose of apologetics, I only will say that placing them in this book, at least at the location that they are, is tangential, and breaks the continuity of the argument that the author, up to that point, had been making.

Although I base the above comments only upon listening to the book, and not reading it, I can say that the book is well-written and easy to understand.

Where You Can Find Alternative Bible Software.

Some MobileReaders following this thread might be interested in the following. It's a webpage from AlternativeTo, a website devoted to giving alternatives to different software. It's especially helpful, in my opinion, in finding software that is cheaper than what you want to (or can) pay, but still will do all of the essential things that you want to do. Often the software is free.

The software is not necessarily as good as or comparable to the software that you're looking for alternatives to. It is "alternative" in the sense that it does things similar to the software that you want to find alternatives to.

As an example, let's look at the webpage giving alternatives to Logos Bible Software. I chose Logos because, in my opinion, Logos is tops (Hermeneutica seemed to be the Bible scholars'/academic-types' top choice; it may have been tops all the way around. However, Hermeneutica got acquired, or something like that, by BibleWorks; then, BibleWorks shut down; Hermeneutica went down with it. It's sad, really). If you follow the link above, you will find about 30 alternatives to Logos listed on that webpage.

I haven't made an effort to separate out the software that runs on different platforms (or that even have a mobile version) or different operating systems, but AlternativeTo makes that easy to do.

One final point. Not all of the alternative Bible software is non-denominational/non-sectarian. Some of the Bible software is produced by particular denominations or sects. Be aware that there is the possibility that the documents/publications in their software may be biased. However, you might wish to download and/or read some of those documents/publications, for one reason or another.

I wasn't aware of the wiki that you linked to (I do need "to get out more," and explore the treasure trove that is the MobileRead website). Thanks!

I skimmed over the wiki. Looks like some great resources there, some not on the AlternativeTo website. And it looks like there may some on the AlternativeTo webpage that are not on the wiki. On top of that, I think that I've run across another alternative software website before, a website that might have resources that neither one of the above websites have! I'm composing this on my cellphone--when I get to my laptop, I'll check my bookmarks there.

If anyone else knows of another website listing Bible software, please chime in!

The nice thing about the wiki is that you can add things to it yourself. There is no reason it cannot be the best source out there for everything eBook related. It just needs more people to know about it and those who are willing to update the data.
