Who knows? Perhaps kindle engineers do lurk here ;-)
I was referring to the K1.........I have no clue what the K2 has........

Because someone bought me a sony. But I also like simplicity and I don't want a keyboard or extra buttons, wifi or whatnot. Or, at least I think I don't want those things, because I don't have them and I don't miss them! And because I love my sony

Only thing stopping me is the price. If they ever come down to about $100, I don't see paper books surviving....at least not like they are right now.

$100

Maybe in 5 years time at least, though I doubt it.

The only issues I don't like about my kindle 2 is that there isn't a way to organize library collections according to genre. You can sort, by artist, title, and if it is or is not personal content. The only other thing I don't care for is the internal battery that will have to be replaced by amazon when it wears down.

The battery life is supposed to be extremely long. I've seen some boast a posssible life span of 10 years, but I'm skeptical. Not supporting other formats isn't too much of an issue because you can convert non-drm content easily through amazon, or by using calibre. The kindle does support unprotected .mobi, and .prc files.

The main reason I did not buy a Kindle was I did NOT want the ease of wireless ordering. It would make me impulse buy too much. That's not necessarily a bad thing about Kindle. It was just my choice because I know I can buy books (or ebooks) impulsively.

I like the wireless because it makes it easy to impulse sample which keeps me from impulse buying a whole bunch of books at a time with no idea if I'll like them or not.

I think the biggest problem with the Kindle is the closed format which won't allow for uploading simple pdfs and pdfs with embedded fonts. Also the fact that I can't expand its memory and am not really sure what to think of with the extra space taken up by the keyboard. The fact that it has wireless is a decent feature but shouldn't be factored into the price really as its just another way for them to market books to us, I already have internet at home and everywhere else I go and don't feel like paying for yet another way of forking over money for their books.... my $0.02

There are two things that trouble me a bit. The first is a rather low number of natively supported formats.
The second is a little less serious, and I'm not sure how it works on Kindle 2 vs Kindle 1. A friend of mine has one, and told me you couldn't get rid of the 'status bar' where it displays signal strength, etc. This seems like it would be bothersome when reading Manga on the device, as well as standard text. I would much prefer all the space be dedicated to the content. Is this still an issue with Kindle 2? Does anyone even think this is an issue? I may be overdoing it.

You just need to remember one thing.

You can buy the Kindle, and if you don't like it, you have 30 days to return it, just pay return postage. This would be around what, $5-6 for priority?

You get to play with it, download stuff and see if its for you.

Lots of free downloads, so you aren't out any money.

No re-stocking fee.

Hmmm .... several reasons why I wouldn't buy a Kindle II, and several why I wouldn't buy a Sony. None regarding the Kindle I ... I love mine, all of them.

I agree with this, but since you can't use DRM files from other sources anyway, you're talking non-DRM LIT, DOC, etc. files and you can easily convert those to MOBI before putting them on your Kindle.

I've only seen one other person complain about it, so I think it's a relative non-issue. I think if you want to read manga or comic books you should be getting a color display device anyway. (Yeah, manga is mostly black & white, but has some color pages.) But generally speaking the status bar isn't a distraction.

One reason would be is if you know how to hack applications, you can buy a much cheaper alternative.

$100? It will never happen. Inflation alone will make sure of that.

As for paper books, don't be naive. They'll be selling better than ebooks for the next century at least.
