The requirement for getting books from Amazon is only for a kindle file type, azw. 'epub' books are downloaded directly from the 'library', where ever it is.

So if no support for kindle file books, then no need to ever get the book from Amazon.

I don't need to go to Kobo's website in a browser to complete the borrowing process. The book is automagically synced to my ereader whether I borrow through the library website, browsing on my ereader or using the Overdrive application on whatever device I'm using it on.
I don't believe you need to go to Amazon's website to complete the borrowing process, either. The books are sent to the Kindle cloud where they can be downloaded to any Kindle that is attached to the account.

In the quote above, you were the one who mentioned going to Amazon's site to download the book and tied it to Overdrive integration. This matches up with what I have read on Overdrive's website:

You'll be taken to Amazon's website to finish getting the ebook.
Note: You must complete this step for the book you borrowed to appear in the "Your Content and Devices" list in your Amazon account. If the book doesn't appear in this list, you won't be able to download it on any device.

Since borrowing library books with a Kindle doesn't work outside of the USA, I don't have the personal experience to agree or disagree with your statement that going to Amazon's website in a browser is not needed to complete borrowing the ebook but I would have to go with Overdrive's information barring someone who actually makes use of borrowing Overdrive books for a Kindle stating differently.

Thanks for all the input folks! I'm heading to the city tomorrow so I'll see if I can stop in at best buy or Indigo books to check out the kobo forma and the aura H2O(2). I think the Clara will be too small. I have a feeling I'll be picking up the H2O.

you could check ebay for a cheap used Aura HD? if you like what you have

if you are buying new, some retailers ( e.g. John Lewis in england) sell a no-quibble add on accidental damage cover, so if you drop it and damage the screen you are covered. last time I looked its only a £10 add on

and look at covers that have good edge protection in case you drop one again - "shell design" is the keyword

Sorry...when I said "going to Amazon's site" I was just parroting what you said in your original quote.
Quote:
Canadian librarians do not have much liking for having the customer have to head over to Amazon's site to download the ebooks and the cost is much higher per borrow. Ask your local library's privacy officer about the privacy issues -- they don't like handing any information about patrons over without a court order.
You don't actually have to go to Amazon's site to download the book any more than you have to go to Kobo's site to download the book. As far as I can tell, both work the same way. If someone with a Kindle tied to their Overdrive account borrows a book, the information is sent to Amazon, and the book is made available to the customer from their Amazon account. Isn't that how it works when someone with a Kobo tied to their Overdrive account borrows a book?

With a Kindle, how do you get to Overdrive?

With a Kobo, you just browse directly on your device and add the books. Here are instructions from Overdrive's site. Clearly steps 1-6 are a first time thing. Point is, you do all this without need of any PC: How to borrow OverDrive ebooks on your Kobo ereader

The equivalent page for Kindles on Overdrive seems to imply that you need to use a web browser first (unless these instructions are out of date): Getting started with Kindle Books from your library

You could use the web browser on your Kindle to go to Overdrive and borrow the book, or you could go to Overdrive on your PC and borrow the book that way. Either way, the book is automatically sent to your Kindle cloud and will be accessible directly from your Kindle.

I understand that on a Kobo I could search for and borrow the book directly from the device using the same method as I would to buy a book directly from the device, but I can't see myself ever doing that. The only time I've ever bought a book directly from a device was when I was reading a book that was part of a series, and when I finished it, a window popped up offering to sell me the next book in the series (I think that was on one of my Kindles, but I'm not sure...it was a while ago) I would have to be pretty hard up for something to read to search the store from my device.

Shari, did you read the quote from Overdrive that I quoted? The one that states to finish the book borrowing process, you need to go to Amazon's site?

To quote (again!):

After you borrow the title, select Read now with Kindle.
You'll be taken to Amazon's website to finish getting the ebook.
Note: You must complete this step for the book you borrowed to appear in the "Your Content and Devices" list in your Amazon account. If the book doesn't appear in this list, you won't be able to download it on any device.

I would suggest paying special attention to the portion that is bolded. The difference between Kobo and Amazon is that as soon as I borrow the book from the library web site, it will download on the next synchronization to my Overdrive supported Kobo ereader whereas if I do not go to the Amazon site to finish jumping through hoops, I will not be able to download/synchronize/WhisperSync/whatever the book to my Kindle ereader/app/whatever.

Perhaps I should not have used download as a generic term and instead used a construction intended to cover every possibility.

Ok, I see what you're saying. I thought you were saying that you had to type in www.amazon.com and go to your account and do something, which isn't the case at all. You click the "Read now with Kindle" button, then you are automatically taken to a page where you click a button that says "Get library book", at which point the book is available on any kindle or device that is tied to your Amazon account.

Out of a perhaps morbid curiosity, where did I say that I had to type in "www.amazon.com"? Perhaps I am mistaken in thinking that the end result of clicking the "Get library book" link and being redirected to www.amazon.com to complete the borrowing process is the equivalent of "having the customer have to head over to Amazon's site to download the ebooks" to quote myself.

As for attempting to distinguish between the end result of clicking on a link and typing in the equivalent URL? Hmmm... Pedantic? A fine example of sophistry? Risible? Quibbling? Pretentious? Asking how many angels can dance on the head of that pin? According to the late Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman, the correct answer would be 1.

Just curious about this...

When I buy an ebook, I have to specify a device ("Deliver to ..." on the Amazon ebook page), are library books really delivered to all devices once checked out?

i think they are "delivered " into your amazon account i.e. it is as if you temporarily own them, so any registered device can access. they may even be pushed to all devices, I know that documents are, when I use " send to kindle".

AFAIK, borrowing to read on kindle is a USA library only feature. no UK libraries support it.

Anyone know for sure if they are pushed to all devices? Looking at a screen capture for "Send to Kindle", you pick which devices you want to send it too, along with a checkbox for archive in your library?

Again, I'm Just curious as to how it actually works, so am interested in the Details.

I tried borrowing a Kindle book from my library...

No matter which device I pick to deliver to, it appears to show up in the library on all my devices, and I can than read it on any of the devices (after it gets downloaded). This was done by testing on a PC and Android tablet.
