Denmark Vesey: The Buried Story of America's Largest Slave Rebellion and the Man Who Led It.
$2.99. 223 pages. 4.4-stars, from 38 reviews, at Amazon. This book looked so intensely interesting, that I just "had" to post it. Also, despite the size of the attempted undertaking that the book describes, I had never heard anything about this event in American history (that's pretty unusual). At first, I thought that this just had to be fiction--the more that I read about the book, though, the more that I realized that it isn't! Description In a remarkable feat of historical detective work, David Robertson illuminates the shadowy figure who planned a slave rebellion so daring that, if successful, it might have changed the face of the antebellum South. This is the story of a man who, like Nat Turner, Marcus Garvey, and Malcolm X, is a complex yet seminal hero in the history of African American emancipation. Denmark Vesey was a charasmatic ex-slave--literate, professional, and relatively well-off--who had purchased his own freedom with the winnings from a lottery. Inspired by the success of the revolutionary black republic in Haiti, he persuaded some nine thousand slaves to join him in a revolt. On a June evening in 1822, having gathered guns, and daggers, they were to converge on Charleston, South Carolina, take the city's arsenal, murder the populace, burn the city, and escape by ship to Haiti or Africa. When the uprising was betrayed, Vesey and seventy-seven of his followers were executed, the matter hushed by Charleston's elite for fear of further rebellion. Compelling, informative, and often disturbing, this book is essential to a fuller understanding of the struggle against slavery. |

https://www.amazon.com/Slouching-Tow...N?tag=mr022-20. Moreover, the Audible narration is only $1.99. From the time that someone brought this to my attention, recently, I am now thoroughly confused as to which ebooks with Audible narrations are Whispersync deals, and which ebooks with Audible narrations are not. At any rate, you can get the ebook ($1.99) and the audiobook ($1.99) for only $3.98! * That's the 1960's. I'm glad it's gone. In order to stay away from anything political, I won't say why I feel that way. However, to its credit, there was some awesome music produced in that decade. Awesome music. ![]() The ebook is still $2.99. If you don't plan on buying the book, I encourage you at least to read the Wikipedia article about Vessey and the planned slave revolt. You might get asked a question (answer) about it on Jeopardy, or something. Last edited by GtrsRGr8; 05-24-2019 at 09:22 PM. |

An organization called "Ancient Origins" is offering, for _free_, four books that it has published.
Each book is a different one that was published on the occasion of each of Ancient Origins' four anniversaries. They are each entitled _Unravelling Ancient Myths and Legends_. I've taken a very cursory look at information about the company, found on their website, and a very cursory look at some of the _12,000_ articles that they have published. So far, so good. And there must have been one or more good things that I saw about them/their publications that caused me to sign up for their newsletter, although I don't remember the specific things now. Maybe someone would be willing to do more vetting of the organization and/or of these _free_ books that they're offering? https://www.ancient-origins.net/opin...e-ebook-007589. ADDENDUM: There are two important things that I failed to mention. First, in order to get any of the four ebooks, you will need to either join Ancient Origins' website or subscribe to their newsletter. Second, the books seem to be available only in PDF. To save a book, click on the "Print" option, and select the PDF option. Someone more technically astute than I am might know of a way to save a book in some other format than PDF. Echo in Ramadi: The Firsthand Story of US Marines in Iraq's Deadliest City.
This book has a 4.9-star(!) rating, from 214 reviews, and is ranked in the "Top 10 Military Books of 2018" by Military Times. It's supposed to be 99 cents through this week; the print list price is $29.99 (I'll try to get the digital list price, later, which will better reflect the actual discount). I was around, of course, during the Iraq War. However, I never could keep up with the actual events--what was happening, where, who was winning (or who won, in the case of individual battles). It seems as though most of what the major media reported were car bombs. Documentation, such as in this book, of the actual work of the soldiers seemed to be even rarer. This book should help fill in those holes for me, at least as far as the one battle that is the subject of this book is concerned. Add the Audible book for only $7.49. With the book being 328 pages, you'll still get a lot of "bang for the buck." https://www.amazon.com/Echo-Ramadi-F...dp/B075RP1HJ6/. ADDENDUM: Ereaderiq.com says that the digital list price is $9.99. With the price of the ebook being 99 cents now, that represents a 90% discount on the ebook. Last edited by GtrsRGr8; 05-31-2019 at 01:29 AM. |

I wouldn't consider most $9.99 ebooks to qualify as a "deal," but with the list price being $84.99, and the Kindle version being $99.00, I think that this one deserves that moniker.
The ebook is Brooklyn's Renaissance: Commerce, Culture, and Community in the Nineteenth-Century Atlantic World, by Melissa Meriam Bullard. It's currently Palgrave Macmillan's "Deal of the Day." Palgrave gives both a "benefits" and a description for this book: Benefits Provides an outstanding cultural analysis of Brooklyn's development in the context of the Renaissance in Europe. Appeals to scholars of European and American cultural history as well as those interested in Brooklyn more broadly. Written by a leading historian of European history using a transatlantic approach to the rise of American urban centres. Description This book shows how modern Brooklyn’s proud urban identity as an arts-friendly community originated in the mid nineteenth century. Before and after the Civil War, Brooklyn’s elite, many engaged in Atlantic trade, established more than a dozen cultural societies, including the Philharmonic Society, Academy of Music, and Art Association. The associative ethos behind Brooklyn’s fine arts flowering built upon commercial networks that joined commerce, culture, and community. This innovative, carefully researched and documented history employs the concept of parallel Renaissances. It shows influences from Renaissance Italy and Liverpool, then connected to New York through regular packet service like the Black Ball Line that ferried people, ideas, and cargo across the Atlantic. Civil War disrupted Brooklyn’s Renaissance. The city directed energies towards war relief efforts and the women’s Sanitary Fair. The Gilded Age saw Brooklyn’s Renaissance energies diluted by financial and political corruption, planning the Brooklyn Bridge and consolidation with New York City in 1898. Many people love Brooklyn--I happen to know two people locally who are named "Brooklyn," after the name of the borough. Keep in mind, however, that Palgrave Macmillan is an academic publisher, so this book will tend not to be casual, "popular" reading for most folks. https://www.palgrave.com/us/book/9783319501758.
