Simply superb.
The Sundance Channel is airing a miniseries adaptation with John Turturro and Rupert Everett. I don't have the Sundance Channel, but I would like to see it eventually.

If Death Ever Slept is the 29th in the Nero Wolfe/Archie Goodwin series by Rex Stout. It has dropped to $1.99 at Kindle and Kobo US. Stout's titles only rarely go on sale in the US, but Random House does seem to have been putting them on sale occasionally, one-by-one, spaced far apart, and usually not for very long. So I've been grabbing them when I see them.

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B003JMFP10
Kobo US: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/if-death-ever-slept

Also on sale at Kindle UK for £1.49: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B003JMFP10

Spoiler:
Quote:
Murder lurks in the wings of the sprawling Fifth Avenue penthouse of multimillionaire Otis Jarrell, who has just retained the incomparable Nero Wolfe on a case of the utmost confidentiality. But even the master detective cannot prevent tragedy when it inevitably arrives wielding Jarrell’s missing revolver. Soon a second victim meets his maker, and Wolfe must piece together the truth behind Jarrell’s scandalously ill-behaved family. And for one member of that charmed circle—a two-time killer sleeping the fitful sleep of the guilty—it could prove a deadly awakening.

Introduction by Robert B. Parker

“It is always a treat to read a Nero Wolfe mystery. The man has entered our folklore.”—The New York Times Book Review

A grand master of the form, Rex Stout is one of America’s greatest mystery writers, and his literary creation Nero Wolfe is one of the greatest fictional detectives of all time. Together, Stout and Wolfe have entertained—and puzzled—millions of mystery fans around the world. Now, with his perambulatory man-about-town, Archie Goodwin, the arrogant, gourmandizing, sedentary sleuth is back in the original seventy-three cases of crime and detection written by the inimitable master himself, Rex Stout.

The Green Ripper is another title in another series (18th in the Travis McGee series by John D. MacDonald) that rarely goes on sale in the US, and is insanely expensive (normally $11.99 in the US) when not on sale. It has dropped to $2.99 and is IMO another one of those grab-it-when-you-see-it-on-sale titles...

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B008WOO69W
Kobo US: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/the-green-ripper

Spoiler:
Quote:
From a beloved master of crime fiction, The Green Ripper is one of many classic novels featuring Travis McGee, the hard-boiled detective who lives on a houseboat.

Travis McGee has known his share of beautiful girls, but true love always passed him by—until Gretel. Life aboard the Busted Flush has never been so sweet. But suddenly, Gretel dies of an unidentified illness—or so he’s told. Convinced that the woman who stole his heart has been murdered, McGee finds himself pursuing a less-than-noble cause: revenge.

“To diggers a thousand years from now, the works of John D. MacDonald would be a treasure on the order of the tomb of Tutankhamen.”—Kurt Vonnegut

McGee has lost not only the love of his life but also his last hope for stability. Soon grief turns to blinding rage. So when he finds the people responsible for Gretel’s death, McGee goes off the rails—and off the grid, three thousand miles from home.

McGee emerges in the California woods as Tom McGraw, a fisherman looking for his long-lost daughter. This mysterious newcomer starts knocking off targets one by one. But as he pursues his single-minded crusade for justice, he becomes more and more unhinged. McGee has spent his life saving other people, but now he’ll need to find the strength to save himself—before he loses his mind.

Not on sale, but I just picked up "The Good Old Stuff," a selection of his classic pulp stories from the 1950s. There's also a second collection available. Here's the link:

https://www.amazon.com/Good-Old-Stuf...sr=1-6-catcorr

I have this in Hardback - First Edition - but it's currently in storage.

Also, some of his earlier novels are available for $2.99-$3.99, under some series called 'The Murder Room' - considerably less expensive than most of his ebooks. I have no further knowledge about them, however. Here's a link, so you can get a look at them:

https://www.amazon.com/Drowner-John-...ateway&sr=8-19

Too bad the original covers couldn't be used. These current covers are about as interesting as my freshly-laundered underwear.

Rogue Wave (aka Hat Check) by David Berens is $0.99 at Amazon US. The BookBub blurb mentions Elmore Leonard, but it sounds more like a Carl Hiaasan book to me.

Quote:
Military veteran Troy Bodean’s placid fisherman life is turned upside down after a found hat containing seven million dollars leads to a murderous case of mistaken identity…
The Amazon reviews are mixed, the Goodreads reviews are better. The book was $0.99, so I bought it.

It's the first in a series of six and all six are on sale for $0.99 a piece through May 17.

A New York Times bestseller: The police investigate the death of a veterinarian in Venice, Italy in this “swiftly paced” mystery (The Seattle Times).

When the body of man is found in a canal, damaged by the tides, carrying no wallet, and wearing only one shoe, Guido Brunetti has little to work with. No local has filed a missing-person report, and no hotel guests have disappeared.

The autopsy shows he had suffered from a rare, disfiguring disease. A shopkeeper tells Brunetti that the man had a kindly way with animals. Finally, the victim is identified as a much-loved veterinarian—and Brunetti’s quest to find the killer will take him on a harrowing journey . . .

“All her trademark strengths shine in this swiftly paced, sophisticated tale of greed versus ethics.” —The Seattle Times

“Written with such delicacy and emotional force that we can’t help but be reminded of Greek tragedy.” —Booklist, starred review

I can't tell if this is the wrong thread for this. The description doesn't make it out to be a mystery, and the book is too new to have reviews. But crime is the genre Max Allan Collins is known for...

USS Powderkeg by Max Allan Collins is $0.99 at Amazon.

Quote:
World War II is raging. Newly promoted Lt. Peter Maxwell is assigned to a munitions ship with a crew of mostly inexperienced African-American sailors commanded by a racist Captain. The ship is a floating powderkeg that could ignite at any instant as the embattled crew faces typhoons, kamikaze pilots, mutiny and murder. It's an incredible adventure, inspired by true events, from the boundless imagination of Max Allan Collins, the Mystery Writers of America Grandmaster who gave us the Road to Perdition.

This is a revised edition of book previously published as "Red Sky in Morning" under the pseudonym “Patrick Culhane.”

Looking it up by the previous title and author, one commenter mentions "murder mystery", so that's where the plot eventually goes.
