Enlightenment Now: The Case for Reason, Science, Humanism, and Progress, by Steven Pinker, is currently $1.99 at Amazon.com:

https://www.amazon.com/dp/0525427570

Quote:
An Amazon Best Book of March 2018: Given the 24-hour news cycle to which we have grown accustomed, it’s difficult to navigate life and think that everything is peachy. But Steven Pinker has set out, first in The Better Angels of Our Nature, and now in Enlightenment Now, to illustrate that there has never been a better time to be a human being. In his new book, Pinker points out that the slow creep of progress is not as newsworthy as, say, an earthquake or an explosion. So it’s clear why we don’t always have the sense that things are getting better. But the Enlightenment—with its dedication to science, reason, humanism, and progress—has led people to live longer, healthier, freer, and happier lives. And Pinker uses charts, data, history, and a firm dedication to his cause to empirically prove that we are living in better times. It makes sense to be skeptical of a scientist arguing that that science is the answer. And his optimism won’t always jibe with your personal experience or judgement. But there’s lots to chew on here—and it’s so easy to obsess on the intrusions and negatives of technology and “advancement” that this book can serve as a kind of antidote. —Chris Schluep, the Amazon Book Review

The Sense of Style: The Thinking Person’s Guide to Writing in the 21st Century by Steven Pinker

Cognitive scientist and linguist Steven Pinker uses the latest scientific insights to bring us a style and usage guide for the 21st century. What do skilful writers know about the link between syntax and ideas? How can we overcome the Curse of Knowledge, the difficulty in imagining what it's like not to know something we do? And can we distinguish the myths and superstitions from rules that enhance clarity and grace? As Pinker shows, everyone can improve their mastery of writing and their appreciation of the art (yes, 'their').

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Sense-Style...dp/B00JW50680/

Steven Pinker is one of the world's leading authorities on language and the mind. His popular and highly praised books include The Stuff of Thought, The Blank Slate, Words and Rules, How the Mind Works, and The Language Instinct. The recipient of several major awards for his teaching, books, and scientific research, Pinker is Harvard College Professor and Johnstone Family Professor of Psychology at Harvard University.

A Close Run Thing: The Navy and the Falklands War by Richard Freeman

In 1982, Argentina invaded the Falkland Islands, triggering the last great naval battle of the 20th-century. The British Task Force sent to reclaim the islands was the largest amphibious landing since D-day in the Second World War.

In this ground-breaking essay, the acclaimed naval historian Richard Freeman tells the story of the Royal Navy in that momentous campaign. The ships had to transport the men, their machines and equipment, but also to supply them at a distance of nearly 8000 miles from their home ports.

FREE Rough Guides Travel Guide.

Got all of your summer vacay plans set? I do. It's called "the house." But for those of you who are privileged enough to actually go somewhere, you might really appreciate this free deal.

Rough Guides is a series of travel guides for various foreign countries, plus the U.S. They've currently got one of the better free ebook offers that I've seen lately! They offer one of them, out of quite a large selection, for free. If you had to buy one of these ebooks, the choices would run you from about $14 to $24 retail.

Rough Guides books tend to be highly to very highly rated, at Amazon and GoodReads.

But let me say this, before I go any further: "please, please do the ethical and honest thing!" Go to RoughGuides.com, and look over one or more of Rough Guides' products, before requesting the free ebook. Rough Guides is very generously offering the free ebook based upon you following their (simple and easy) requirements for receiving the free ebook, and one of those is for you to look over one or more of their products. That's not much to ask, is it?

Once you've done that, navigate to this webpage. Follow the instructions. There is a very short survey for you to take, and then there is the obligatory request for some personal information. They'll send you an email message which will give you the rest of the information that you need to know, and the instructions that you need to follow, in order to download the book.

The website says that you can get the ebook, that you select, in PDF, ePub, and mobi (however, mobi was not available for the ebook that I selected). As it turns out, I was able to download both the PDF and the ePub flavors of the ebook that I selected, though!

Thanks Gtrs!

I was surprised that they had so little on the American South, while so much on Toronto/Ontario/Canada.

It might be a Canadian company. I dunno.

There are books on different parts of the U.S., but the books are part of different series (all of them look like they're less detailed than the ones that I posted about, to one degree or another).

I didn't see anything about the South, but we need to keep it a secret about how great it is here, anyway.

Thanks for the thanks.

They are a British publisher. The US is a foreign country as far as they're concerned.
