Anybody get the new Kindle (10th gen)?

I should correct myself. I don't think the light was on. If it was, it was set really low, much, much lower than the Oasis they had on display. If the light truly was off, the contrast was very good. It appeared to be brighter, with better contrast, than the Paperwhite 4 (whose screen was also either turned off or very low). The Oasis was turned up too high and also in demo mode, so I really don't know what its screen would have looked like at a "normal" setting. Best Buy used to let you try these out. The demo mode is poor way to display the device. Many times graphics look good on eInk screens but the fonts can be washed out — although I am encouraged by the actual picture that was displayed in this thread by Pjama.

Glad so many found my picture helpful, and to hear other positive opinions about this kindle. I’ve now been reading on it for a couple of days and have fallen for it in a way I never did for the Oasis. After being used to the Oasis, I’m actually enjoying the smaller form factor and the warm touch of the plastic casing. It feels more bookish and I have the feeling of reading a well-loved paperback. (I purchased the amazon cover, which definitely helps give this feeling). I’m attaching another picture, this time of the same X-ray page on both my Oasis and new Kindle basic side by side. The new one appears so crisp by itself, it’s only when you set it side by side that you notice a difference. These are both at light 18, I actually think the basic looks bolder too. (It also looks soo much better in real life than in this pic. Even if it goes on sale for Mothers Day, I’m not returning this one for a cheaper one. ).

Another thing I’m surprised by is that the recessed screen does not annoy me at all. I thought it would after four years of the Voyage and one and a half of the Oasis. The white surround often makes me feel I am reading a paperback page, as in certain lighting conditions the edges of the page blend into the surround. I also don’t miss having buttons, and I love the buttons on the Oasis.

In short, for me, the basic is tactile and loveable in a way the Oasis isn’t.

Thanks for the new picture. You're doing a good job of selling this new Kindle! One thing I would like to see, if possible, is a picture of this Kindle with its light off (or at the lowest setting, not sure if it completely turns off). I've got a feeling that, in good light, it would be sharper than my 8th Generation Kindle (with Pearl screen).

I am doing a good job of selling it, but don’t blame me if you get it and don’t like it!

Anyway, here it is in part sunlight with the front light completely off, as you can see, it still has a very gray background. I'm not sure that it would be sharper than your 8th gen.

That's what I was hoping to see. Even with the light layer, it's look pretty close to being even with the Kindle 8th Generation. I was hoping E-Carta (instead of Pearl) would "balance out" the light layer and it looks like it does. I've attached an image of the 8th Generation's screen in decent (but not bright) light. (The font is the dark DejaVu Serif E-Ink, no "added" bold.)

I should have said, the first pic with no light, I have it set to Bookerly with level 1 boldness.

Yes. That's more a function of firmware so it behaves like other Kindles in that regard.

Just received my new Kindle. Alas, I definitely notice the extra fuzziness/jaggies/blur during normal reading. I don’t even have to put it side by side with the PW4 to be able to tell. It’s tolerable for nighttime reading with brightness set to 5-6. It’ll bother me during daytime though. For me personally, the PW4 is well worth the extra $20.

That’s a shame, sorry you didn’t have the positive experience I’m having. I like my Oasis for night time reading using the white on black, and for in or near water. But I still prefer the little one for day to day reading.
