Chirp is owned and operated by the same people who started BookBub, a book discovery service used by millions of readers across the world. Although Chirp was just recently launched, BookBub and its parent company Pubmark Inc. have been around since 2012, and are located in Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA . . . .

I am not familiar with Pubmark, the parent company of Chirp and BookBub, nor Chirp, in specific. However, I would say that I am familiar with BookBub. In fact, I think that I have "been with them" since almost the time that they started, in 2012. They definitely have seemed to be on the up & up, and I know that they have had a helpful and professional-looking (and glitch-free) website over that time. I have purchased ebooks through them numerous times, and things have always gone smoothly.

BookBub and Chirp's business models appear to be different. BookBub's is what I suppose is called an affliate business. They make their money through links to businesses which sell the ebooks that they feature. When people click on the links to buy ebooks that they feature, BookBub gets a small percentage of the amount of each sale.

It appears that Chirp's business model be different. They do not direct you to the websites of businesses which sell audiobooks--it appears that they sell audiobooks themselves, i.e., you buy directly from them. I tried out the purchasing process, all the way to the payment part of the process. I may try to find an audiobook that I would like to own, and go all the way through the process to see how well it works.

BTW--Chirp accepts PayPal. It's been quite a while since I offered PayPal on my micro-small dead-tree book businesses, and I don't have much familiarity with PayPal now. However, in my business days they offered some buyer protections.

So, thanks Camelreader, for your post. It looks like the company/website may be a good one!

Actually, I asked about Chirp quite a while ago and never got a response...
I ignore their offers because:
The books have DRM and you must use their app.
Yeah, I really want ANOTHER app
They don't have any catalog of books that I could find, just a few that are on "special offer".
My big question is this: What happens to your purchased books if/when they fold and quit supporting/updating their app?
I suppose if you view the purchase price as a rental to might be worth it. They are cheap enough to be viewed that way. Sign up for their email and you may find something you want.
