What does this mean?
I was trying to convert a book from .doc to AZW3. After fiddling with the metadata, I clicked the Convert Books Individually and this message popped up:

calibre, version 3.36.0
WARNING: Could not convert some books: Could not convert the book because no supported source format was found

I don't understand why .doc isn't supported. I'll try saving the .doc as rtf to see if that helps.

The rtf version worked. I'll let these comments stand just in case anyone else has problems with the .doc format.

Calibre does not (never has) natively support DOC format. You need to install a plugin or use some other app to make a file type that Calibre does convert

FWIW - a better choice would be to save as DOCX, see What are the best source formats to convert?

There is DOC input plugin for conversion. It only works on Windows as it requires a Microsoft tool for the conversion.

Having said that, I'd still go with another format as the starting point. Use Word or whatever to produce DOCX, RTF or something else appropriate.

This would work well for those with more modern versions of Word, but I have the 2002 version which came in a Works bundle. It's too old to save to .docx though it can read .docx by converting them into .doc, which is does automatically, but sometimes turns the docx into lots of gobble-de-gook!

It's far easier for me to save as rtf.

Because .doc is undocumented, proprietary format. All non-Microsoft readers and convertors of .doc format are reverse engineered.
Originally, long time ago (before 1997, I think), Microsoft word saved rtf documents (using .doc extension). But they started using the proprietary, undocumented format to gain advantage over competing word processors. I have read an analysis of the format and Microsoft programmers made sure that the .doc format is difficult to read.
