I've found that sideloading causes me no problems on my Glowlight 3 as long as I wait a few minutes for the thing to refresh itself after I add books. It's remarkably slow but 20 minutes later it's always just fine.

I haven't noticed sideloaded books disappearing either. But enough people have that I believe it. There's also the disappearing shelves. I don't use shelves myself, but they're obviously important to some users.

I will say that comparing the Glowlight Plus and the Glowlight 3 side by side, the Plus is more stable and faster. Since the Glowlight 3 has innards that are either the same or better than the Plus, it tells me that it is software issues that are causing Glowlight 3 woes.

I wasn't doubting that others have the books disappearing. It happened to me at first, or I thought it did. Then I found out about the author sort thing where it only counts several books by a single author as one book so now I'm not sure. I've had no problems since I stopped sorting by authors.

I also don't use shelves. I'm not even sure what they are so I can't really comment on those.

Unfortunately it's not a problem of sorting. It's mainly a problem of corruption of memory partition I suppose. Take a look on example of my Nook's memory after plugging into computer one day:

Yep. I think you're right that it's corruption.

I don't use mine a lot but I have used it some and so far it's been very stable. I do put books on it every week or two as I buy and convert new books.

My experience with the Glowlight 3 is the same as yours. I wonder if it has anything to do with the fact that neither of us uses shelves/collections on our Nooks?

That might be. I don't do anything to try to organize books on my Nook and I keep a lot more books on it than I do my Kindles. It's sort of my warehouse for books so I can quickly take a look at a book if I read or hear something about it that makes me want to take a closer look.

I had a moment of braveness or foolishness and tried the Nook's built-in delete function rather than using Calibre as I usually do, to clear out books I'd sideloaded and read; and lo, the Nook doesn't even see the sideloaded books (or anything, viewing all not just viewing "books") as available to delete, it only showed me the purchased books/downloaded book samples I'd gotten from BN.

I would guess this is a hamfisted way to keep the Nook from deleting too much, but it's strange.

You can delete them individually from the device. Just not in bulk like this. Press and hold the sideloaded book and you get a menu with view details or delete. If you choose delete, it warns you about not being able to just download it again and has the option to cancel or delete if you're sure.

Happened again.
First the Nook lost its WiFi connection; restored that
Then the Reader quit working. Rebooted.
Then I had just four books left, a few dozen gone missing
They're all visible in the Nook folder mounted on the Mac desktop, and all visible to Calibre.

Used Calibre to dismount the Nook.
Got a message saying all USB sideloaded files are corrupt, erase all?
Yes, erased all.

The Nook is a leaky bucket.

You mention that you're using a Mac. I'm using Windows. I don't have any problems with this on my Glowlight 3 and others do. It might be worth mentioning if you're having problems whether you're using a Mac or Windows or some other OS.

I'm not trying to say it's a Mac problem but that just occurred to me as a possibility and it would be nice to know.

Good point, Barry. I also use Windows for sideloading, and haven't had any issues with my Glowlight 3. Granted I don't use it that often, but I haven't seen any books disappear (or the other issues hank mentions).

I just tried the suggested method using the Nook to delete a single book.
I had 16 books when I tried to delete one of them.
Now I show 4 books (2 are the Nook manuals).
The book I tried to delete is still shown as available.
The other 12 just disappeared from the Nook.

The Mac desktop folder still has all of the missing books visible, with a modification date of yesterday.

Calibre also sees all of the missing books.
