With no desire or intent to steal your thunder, there are at least two other booklets in that series, at least in the U.S.: one on Teatime Treats and one on preserves and relish recipes.

Back three or four years ago, there was a protracted discussion on this thread about old cookbooks. I took away from that discussion that there are two main problems with them: 1) the meaning of measurements given in those books has disappeared, or has almost done so, and 2) some of the ingredients are hard to find nowadays. Now my input: we may be missing out on some delicious foods, because of those issues, that we would enjoy eating today.

[QUOTE=GA Russell;3835799]Weber's Big Book of Burgers - $1.99
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01AFE7FJ4[/QUOTE

Weber is a grill manufacturer. It looks like they would give away this book, as a way to increase their sales, retain customers, etc. And, after all, this is an ebook; I know that there are expenses in creating ebooks, but they are nothing like that for dead-tree books.

I don't remember grill manufacturers, specifically, doing this, but I run across books in thrift stores, used book sales, etc. (yes, I still buy (cheap) dead-tree books. I'm so ashamed. . I'm getting therapy to help me get over the addiction. Please have patience with me, as I recover. ). that are from manufacturers of other cooking stuff, and appear to have been included with whatever cooking things that people bought.

Now if the books were by Steven Raichlen, or somebody like him, that would be a different matter.

FYI--the book is priced at $21.95, book if purchased directly from Weber, for a soft cover (it appears that that is the only format that the book is available in on the Site).

I've been so negative in this post . . . but here's something positive: the book is rated 4.6(104) stars at Amazon (I didn't see any point, with that great rating, of checking at GoodReads or elsewhere).

First of all, Seriously?

I think all of these Weber barbecuing books are written by one author, Jamie Purviance, and they look like they all started as print books sold by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, and most, if not all have the ebook edition by HMH as well. My guess is that HMH is paying Weber for use of their trademark, and not the other way around. Certainly the existence of these BBQ books are unlikely to have an appreciable effect on the Weber grill sales. They're accessories. I could see if Weber wasn't the name in American grills, and they were to be publishing pamphlets with a dozen or so recipes highlighting their grills, I would expect them to be free. But these books are not that. They've each got at least 100 recipes, 150 or more print pages with lots of photographs. IMHO, $1.99 is a pretty good price.

Seriously.

You may have analyzed the nature of their (Weber grills and "Weber" cookbooks) relationship better than I.

You described a situation where a publisher evidently pays for the right to use the (popular!) name of "Weber." I was traveling back, in my mind, to the situation in the early days of "consumer" microwave ovens.

The first microwave oven that I owned was in about 1985 or 1986 (ones in, say, breakrooms of businesses, came along in about the mid-1960's).

Individuals knew that they couldn't really cook meals with them, at least not in the same way that they did with conventional ovens! So, "all" of the consumer microwave companies threw in, with their ovens (and maybe paid a licensing fee for!), a "microwave cookbook," usually from a popular cookbook publisher like Betty Crocker.

In that situation, the manufacturers of the microwave machines used the brand names of the cookbook to try to sell the machine to customers. After reading your post and thinking about it, I believe that the situation between Weber and "Weber" cookbooks is just the opposite--Weber cookbooks use the name of the (popular) Weber grill to bring greater prestige to their cookbooks!

In short, I think that you are right.

I have used the Weber Cookbooks and they are well written and the recipes work. You can't say that for all cookbooks.

Thanks. Gr8 find.

The first two under the second link, are free. However, in skimming the list I didn't see any Mitchell Beazley-authored books, even though I noticed that, indeed, that was what the search was for.

If the other ones were free, I'd just buy all of them, and sort through them later. But, as it is for me right now, there's information overload with the 99 cent ones--there are just too many to sort through. And, for whatever reason, Kobo doesn't have (many?) ratings with which to help make decisions.

But I am gratefully taking the freebies.

Mitchell Beazley is the imprint, both Kyle Books and Mitchell Beazley are subsidiaries of Octopus Books. Sadly, Kobo has a smaller customer base and a lot fewer reviews. In this case, since the sale is from UK publishers at Amazon UK, Little Egret's list is probably the best place to look for reviews anyway.

If you're buying from Amazon in the US, here's the equivalent advanced searches
Mitchell Beazley Kyle Books. I rarely buy from Amazon, and Kobo has a link for the publisher on each book's page, so I find it easier to search Kobo for sales by publisher.

Unfortunately, some publishers (mostly small press) only seem to put their books on sale at Amazon.

Gotcha.

I probably knew, at one time, that "Michael Beazley" was the name of a publisher but, if so, I sure had forgotten that by the time that I saw your post. My apologies.

Yeah, smaller customer base. That's bound to make a difference . . . .
