Hmmmm, you can download samples of books and put books on a wish list on Amazon too. Generally I find the samples are mostly the index, preface, about the author, blah, blah, blah, and very little of the actual book itself. Although...... I do have to CONFESS to one impulse book buy from Amazon when I downloaded and read the sample of The Ultimate Cookbook. It actually had some recipes and pertinent stuff that I found useful, so I bought it, right there in my car in the grocery store parking lot! Oh, and BTW their recipe for the Ultimate Granola is awesome! So see, I "saved" money by not buying the boxed cereal but instead picked up the few ingredients I needed to make the recipe.
I sold my Sony 505 and that paid for half of my Kindle purchase. And now some nice lady in Arizona is enjoying a nearly new 505 and she got it for less than the price a new one. Everybody wins!

Yep. And the highest actually sold as far as the search goes is $499.99. A ridiculous price to be sure, but still much less than the $1500-$1000.00 price range some people are asking.

I've seen a few entries on eBay where a K1 is pictured, but they say it is a K2. I want to smack those bidding on them. Even worse, I saw a K2 for sale that was coming out of India. The chances of that being something legitimate are slim to none.

I hear ya. I had K2 envy too so I bought one... then returned it a few days later. It's a nice reader with some "cute" features. But as a reader it doesn't read easier or feel better in my hands than the 505, which is why it went back. Amazon still has some work do to in the case and interface design.

I have both and what previous Sony reader owners will discover in owning a Kindle, eventhough Amazon boast having 244,000 books, most new release will have 'not yet available' tag and it can take weeks before you can buy the book, while every other ebook store has them available the DAY of release. I'm impatient and have not bought an Amazon book in over 2 months. If it was not for this board, I would be very frustrated; I just buy my books at CyberRead, BooksonBoard, & Fictionwise. I rarely use the Sony ebook store (eventhough Sony is #1 for uploading books the day it comes out, they even upload at midnight on release date and on weekends), I usually don't like their prices and the LRX format is a deal killer. Amazon takes too long to make books available so I buy most of my books from outside vendors except when there's a big discrepancy in prices, then I have to practice patience and wait for Amazon to make the book available weeks later. I would not have noticed if I did not own a PRS-505 11 months prior to buying a Kindle.

Can you give some examples of new releases not being available on release day? I see from the Amazon Forums that some monthly romance titles have been slower on Amazon (I don't know if these are Harlequin titles or not). I also know that some authors are notorious about delaying ebook title releases (Evanovich). I read mostly current bestseller fiction and haven't had a book in that category as "not available". I *Have* had to wait for price drops (after a week wait I finally downloaded the the new Kim Harrison book).

They are worse in the romance category but it's not just romance because I read more then 1 gerne! Julian Barnes' "England, England." It has an entry in the Kindle store claiming it was published Jan. 21, 2009, but reads "Not Yet Available." And yes, it's been available at the Sony store since Jan 21st! It was not available until yesterday, eventhough I could search for it in Kindle books. As of March 4th, it was still showing not yet available; Me and several people sent customer service an e-mail and 1 person also started a thread in the Kindle 2 forum about this and all of us got these generic replies from Amazon and 6 hours later 3 of the 4 books suddenly became available! Why should we have to complaint in a public forum to get results. Ignoring the problem will not fix it, it's people that takes the initiative that's going to make Amazon better! And yes, I've been observant enough to know that the problem is only the Amazon bookstore.

I see what you're saying. The 2 titles you gave as samples are back catalog items (they're available in paperback), and looks like Amazon has place holder pages using the date the books were supposedly converted but they aren't available. That makes sense for pre-orders but not for back catalog. It's confusing and frustrating.

I'm glad you got results even if you had to use the "power of the people" to get them.

You know what would be nice? Something the size of a cigarette lighter that you push a button on, and it 'pops out' to an 8" color screen...........with folders.....and whispernet world-wide..........
