Hello,
Thanks to this kind community, I've successfully jailbroken my PW4 some months ago. I have since kept the factory image "in case", but I now wonder if there is actually any case where I would have to use it again, is there? ![]() |

@frfry: If you haven't updated your device, there's a remote possibility it could be helpful in case of a major SNAFU. But if you have updated your device, yeah, it's mostly dead weight

![]() Even if I use exclusively koreader, I've thought it could benefit from all hardware management improvements. Thanks for answering, I'll save some backup bytes. ![]() |

So I *thought* I had the helper+ KUAL extension installed blocking updates but apparently my kindle updated itself to 5.11.1. Luckily the tool running to keep my jailbreak work and I am still jailbroken.
But it does give me pause. Don't want to have the kindle update itself without my knowledge again. I had to do the rejiggering process of reinstalling a few things like USBNetworking and getting syncthing working again. Question: Is helper+ saying "no to OTA updates" enough to prevent them from happening again? 2) i verified the update.bin.tmp.partial directory is there... not sure what else I can check. I am hoping I don't have to do this process again. Last edited by arooni; 04-16-2019 at 03:49 PM. |

Please provide the following so that other people can duplicate the failure: What firmware version was the device running prior to the OTA update to 5.11.1 (it is the firmware version that was running, not the firmware version that is be installed that needs to be known). Would you please provide either an image or a screen capture of the file and directory layout seen at the top level of the visible USB mass storage. |

?? You "Reset" it ??
If you did reset it rather than just restart it, you just wiped out the viral part of the jailbreak (the part which re-installs the jailbreak after an OTA update). You really, really, should re-install that (follow directions for installing the "Hotfix" ). And make a note of this second step in installing the jail break to begin with: Quote:

I've never performed general "wipe the device" reset on this Kindle, ever. And I don't plan on doing that. |

"Reset" is a menu entry, so is "Restart", which is on an adjoining line. You are the one who posted: "reset", even when you knew it was, in your mind, a "very imprecise term" rather than a menu entry. |

I think he meant the brand new (compared to the rest of the Helper ext, indeed), OTA block button that I added when we found out about high CPU usage when the matching varlocal flag file was missing.
But, evidently, posting a listing *after* having re-enabled it doesn't tell us much more than confirming there isn't a stupid typo in that extension. It doesn't tell us what the device's state was before getting the update ![]() FWIW, I just enabled WiFi on my PW2 on 5.9.7 for a dozen minutes, and nothing happened ![]() |
