Hello,

Thanks to this kind community, I've successfully jailbroken my PW4 some months ago. I have since kept the factory image "in case", but I now wonder if there is actually any case where I would have to use it again, is there?

@frfry: If you haven't updated your device, there's a remote possibility it could be helpful in case of a major SNAFU. But if you have updated your device, yeah, it's mostly dead weight .

If you have not let it update, you can jailbreak that version (if PW4 - you did not say).
See first post of this thread.

I've updated, thanks to your work.
Even if I use exclusively koreader, I've thought it could benefit from all hardware management improvements.

Thanks for answering, I'll save some backup bytes.

So I *thought* I had the helper+ KUAL extension installed blocking updates but apparently my kindle updated itself to 5.11.1. Luckily the tool running to keep my jailbreak work and I am still jailbroken.

But it does give me pause. Don't want to have the kindle update itself without my knowledge again.

I had to do the rejiggering process of reinstalling a few things like USBNetworking and getting syncthing working again.

Question: Is helper+ saying "no to OTA updates" enough to prevent them from happening again? 2) i verified the update.bin.tmp.partial directory is there... not sure what else I can check.

I am hoping I don't have to do this process again.

That reads as if you are reporting a use case (model/(prior)firmware version) which can over-ride the blocking directory.

Please provide the following so that other people can duplicate the failure:

What firmware version was the device running prior to the OTA update to 5.11.1 (it is the firmware version that was running, not the firmware version that is be installed that needs to be known).

Would you please provide either an image or a screen capture of the file and directory layout seen at the top level of the visible USB mass storage.

Was running 5.10.3 previously. I am almost positive I had the Helper+ extension installed and had blocked OTA updates. I went ahead and reset it which is why you'll see today's date as the modified date.

?? You "Reset" it ??
If you did reset it rather than just restart it, you just wiped out the viral part of the jailbreak (the part which re-installs the jailbreak after an OTA update).
You really, really, should re-install that (follow directions for installing the "Hotfix" ).

And make a note of this second step in installing the jail break to begin with:

The process that wipes the hidden one will also wipe what can be seen over the USB cable.
Spoiler:
  • Make backup copies of the contents of /documents
You are about to wipe them all out, if you have them pushed to your Kindle's cloud, you should be covered.
You should not need copies of the contents of /system - the 'system' should re-build them for you.
  • Do not copy the contents of /documents back to the Kindle until after you have returned to the same firmware version that you copied them from.
The indexer might go crazy if you try anything else than 'back to same place, with same version running'.
  • You are about to lose all personalization of your kindle.
You can't reach that hidden directory they are stored in and it is this database that causes most of the problems, so it MUST go.
  • Home -> Menu -> Settings -> Menu -> Reset
Or whatever the path is on your current firmware version.
This is the infamous "Reset (to factory defaults)" menu choice, but in this case it is a requirement, a must use entry.

This is the ONLY TIME you should ever use the Reset menu entry in the lifetime of the device because it wipes out the jail break survival code that is about to be added in step 6 below.

NEVER AGAIN USE THE "Reset" MENU ENTRY.
Never, ever, unless you intended to wipe out the jailbreak survival code. Which you really, really, need.

If you should happen to trigger the "Reset" action by accident (nobody does it intentionally after reading the above), you can find a package on coplate's snapshots thread that will restore the jailbreak survival code you just destroyed.
The special purpose package linked above is placed in the root of visible USB storage and run using UYK menu entry.

"reset" is a very imprecise term. The only thing I was trying to reference was using the KUAL Helper+ to reestablish the "Prevent OTA Updates"

I've never performed general "wipe the device" reset on this Kindle, ever. And I don't plan on doing that.

That is something from the distant past, if it doesn't work now, do not be surprised.

"Reset" is a menu entry, so is "Restart", which is on an adjoining line.
You are the one who posted: "reset", even when you knew it was, in your mind, a "very imprecise term" rather than a menu entry.

I think he meant the brand new (compared to the rest of the Helper ext, indeed), OTA block button that I added when we found out about high CPU usage when the matching varlocal flag file was missing.

But, evidently, posting a listing *after* having re-enabled it doesn't tell us much more than confirming there isn't a stupid typo in that extension. It doesn't tell us what the device's state was before getting the update .

FWIW, I just enabled WiFi on my PW2 on 5.9.7 for a dozen minutes, and nothing happened .

Just as extra data points, these two are almost always connected to wifi and they haven't auto updated yet:
PW4 5.10.1.2
PW3 5.9.6.1
