I've finished The Hunt for the Red Cardinal. Sadly, it's the worst Ring of Fire piece I've read since some of Virginia DeMarce's stuff, but for different reasons. Her work is confusing, but this is just boring. It's quite impressive to make D'Artagnan and the Three Musketeers boring, but this book's done it.

What a pity.

I'm still reading The Quantum Magician.

I just recently finished a reread of The Daughter of Time by Josephine Tey. It was the choice of the New Leaf Book Club for this month, and a lively discussion is under way.

It is an examination of the guilt or innocence of Richard III in the guise of a detective story, written back in 1951.

Yes, this was an excellent re-read for me, and the discussion is spirited.

Finished "Blackcollar" by Timothy Zahn, bought from Baen in 2006. This is the first half of an omnibus edition of the same name. Amazon description:

Excellent military SF. Unfortunately this is one of many books originally published by Baen that are no longer available to new purchasers, although I see that it's now available as an ebook from Open Road.

I have the Open Road version via a Humble Bundle or Storybundle, I think. I was planning to read it this year, so I'm pleased to hear it's good.

Yesterday I finished Theodora Goss' collection Snow White Learns Witchcraft. It contains both poems and short stories. I really liked the short stories. There were interesting takes on fairy tales and folklore, and they featured interesting heroines. I'm not that much of a fan of poetry, but I did find some of the poems intriguing as well. Well worth picking up.

Finished "Gold from Gemini" by Jonathan Gash, the second book in the "Lovejoy" series. This book sees Lovejoy on the trail of a hoard of Roman gold coins, following obscure clues left in the diary of a former antiques collector, but other people are determined to see that he doesn't succeed, and will stop at nothing to achieve their goal. Extremely enjoyable, although contains scenes that some may find upsetting.

I have nothing but good things to say about cowboy romance novels. That is what helped me relearn to read after a brain injury. The plots are easy, the language is not complex, and the book is short and they were very inexpensive. While I don't read them today, I will always have fond memories of these books.

Currently reading Stalking the Vampire by Mike Resnick. I bought this during the Kobocalypse (is that 4 or 5 years ago now?). Great book! Funny. Overdoes it a bit with some stuff, but still enjoyable. This series is loosely written in the style of Philip Marlow.

That's great. They're definitely a quick easy read and have hunky cowboys on the covers too.

Which was fun, although one of the subplots seemed to go nowhere.

Next up: Julius Katz and Archie by Dave Zeltserman. It had been on my wish list, and then came up free earlier this year. Dectective Mysteries.

I finished Available Light by Dayton Ward. It was nice to read a new Star Trek: TNG book after so long!

Next up is Beautiful Bad by Annie Ward. Another of those psychological thrillers I'm into reading lately.

Finished reading The Girl King by Mimi Yu. It was meh, but I don't know if that is because of the writing, or my current state of being right now...

Completed Three Parts Dead by Max Gladstone. Very inventive murder mystery in a fantasy setting. Most characters nicely developed. Good world building. Competent word skills. Although I guessed the murderer, it were the details that caught me off guard. This one was enjoyable. Rated B [4 stars].
