More expensive than most deals I post here, but Doctor Zhivago by Boris Pasternak is $4.99 at Amazon. It's usually $14.99 and $4.99 is the cheapest it's been.

This is a new translation by Pevear and Volokhonsky who have been on a tear translating Russian classics.

Quote:
First published in Italy in 1957 amid international controversy, Doctor Zhivago is the story of the life and loves of a poet/physician during the turmoil of the Russian Revolution. Taking his family from Moscow to what he hopes will be shelter in the Ural Mountains, Zhivago finds himself instead embroiled in the battle between the Whites and the Reds. Set against this backdrop of cruelty and strife is Zhivago's love for the tender and beautiful Lara, the very embodiment of the pain and chaos of those cataclysmic times. Pevear and Volokhonsky masterfully restore the spirit of Pasternak's original—his style, rhythms, voicings, and tone—in this beautiful translation of a classic of world literature.

FYI, the Pevear & Volokhonsky translation of Zhivago is very controversial. There are numerous criticisms about it online. See, for example, this article written by Pasternak's niece, or this blog post.

Yeah. Lately I've been cruising message boards about translations for other Russian novels and while their translations are generally praised, there have been criticisms.

But since Dr Z is still under copyright, it's the only version available. Amazon also has this one, but it seems pretty sketchy to me.

Gates of Fire by Steven Pressfield is $1.99 at Amazon. A detailed novel about the battle of Thermopylae. Highly recommended. Think of it as a less comic book-y, less jingoistic 300.

Quote:
At Thermopylae, a rocky mountain pass in northern Greece, the feared and admired Spartan soldiers stood three hundred strong. Theirs was a suicide mission, to hold the pass against the invading millions of the mighty Persian army.

Day after bloody day they withstood the terrible onslaught, buying time for the Greeks to rally their forces. Born into a cult of spiritual courage, physical endurance, and unmatched battle skill, the Spartans would be remembered for the greatest military stand in history—one that would not end until the rocks were awash with blood, leaving only one gravely injured Spartan squire to tell the tale. . .

George Saunders' CivilWarLand in Bad Decline is $1.99 at Amazon.

They read one of Saunders' stories (My Famboyant Grandson) on the New Yorker podcast and it was the best story I'd heard on there. I picked up the collection it is in (In Persuasion Nation). His stories could be classified as science fiction, I guess. But they are more literary stories that take place in a world that is darkly, preposterously exaggerated.

Quote:
Funny, sad, bleak, weird, toxic - the future of America as the Free Market runs rampant, the environment skids into disarray, and civilization dissolves into surreal chaos. These wacky, brilliant, hilarious and entirely original stories cue us in on George Saunder's skewed vision of the legacy we are creating. Against the backdrop of our devolvement, our own worst tendencies and greatest virtues are weirdly illuminated.

Like Water for Chocolate: A Novel in Monthly Installments with Recipes, Romances, and Home Remedies by Laura Esquivel is $2.99 at Amazon. I've only seen the acclaimed movie, but haven't yet read the book.

Quote:
Each chapter of screenwriter Esquivel's utterly charming interpretation of life in turn-of-the-century Mexico begins with a recipe--not surprisingly, since so much of the action of this exquisite first novel (a bestseller in Mexico) centers around the kitchen, the heart and soul of a traditional Mexican family. The youngest daughter of a well-born rancher, Tita has always known her destiny: to remain single and care for her aging mother. When she falls in love, her mother quickly scotches the liaison and tyrannically dictates that Tita's sister Rosaura must marry the luckless suitor, Pedro, in her place. But Tita has one weapon left--her cooking. Esquivel mischievously appropriates the techniques of magical realism to make Tita's contact with food sensual, instinctual and often explosive. Forced to make the cake for her sister's wedding, Tita pours her emotions into the task; each guest who samples a piece bursts into tears. Esquivel does a splendid job of describing the frustration, love and hope expressed through the most domestic and feminine of arts, family cooking, suggesting by implication the limited options available to Mexican women of this period. Tita's unrequited love for Pedro survives the Mexican Revolution the births of Rosaura and Pedro's children, even a proposal of marriage from an eligible doctor. In a poignant conclusion, Tita manages to break the bonds of tradition, if not for herself, then for future generations.

Two of the best books I've read in the past couple of years were his Tenth of December and Lincoln in the Bardo (which made my top-ten list last year).

Be warned, the first reviews says CivilWarLand in Bad Decline doesn't quite live up to Tenth of December, but it is his first collection, after all.

I've read a number of Marquez's novellas and short stories and loved them, but have never tackled this one.
