Neptune's Trident: Spices and Slaves 1500-1807 (A History of the British Merchant Navy) by Richard Woodman The first of five volumes, first published by the Tempus Publishing Ltd in 2008. By the 19th century, Great Britain truly ruled the waves. But where did the journey to dominance began? Starting in 1500, the narrative begins with the emergence of the Tudor navy during the Elizabethan period when England defied the might of the Spanish Empire on the world stage. It continues through 1707 when Great Britain was created and the point when the naval and mercantile sea-services parted company. It provides an overview of the 18th century merchant navy and the Seven Years War and ends with an account of the slave trade until its abolition in 1807. Captain Richard Martin Woodman LVO is an English novelist and naval historian who retired in 1997 from a 37 year nautical career, mainly working for Trinity House, to write full-time. His main work is 14 volumes about the career of Nathaniel Drinkwater, and shorter series about James Dunbar and William Kite, but he has also written books about 18th century and WW2 history. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07BFFPH1X https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07BFFPH1X https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B07BFFPH1X |

A good number of volumes of the "American Philosophical Book" series are free as Kindle ebooks. I'm going to guess that there are about 15 in number, of a stated 26 in total.
It might save you some time to let you know that none of these books are what you would call "light reading," except for people who are really sharp on the topics of philosophy and things in that sphere. Me? I'm going to get all of the free ones . . . . in case I get a blow to the head or something and suddenly and "miraculously" become a genius or something, like you hear stories about sometimes. ![]() Find the free ebooks here, interspersed among the other ones. SPECIAL NOTE: Be extra careful not to select a book that has a cost (unless you want it, of course). Amazon has changed things around so that it is now very difficult to get a refund or to have confidence that you are going to get a refund. I learned that this evening, the hard way, by trying to get a refund on an ebook that I had accidentally purchased. I still don't know if I did the right things to get the refund. There may be a discussion of something about this, of which I am not aware, in another forum. Last edited by GtrsRGr8; 04-10-2019 at 02:27 AM. |

The ebooks have always appeared very quickly in my experience. No problem there. It's just that I didn't have the option to "return for refund." |

I have all of my eBooks sent to my cloud rather than to my Kindle. A couple of weeks ago, I accidentally purchased an eBook. I was able to cancel the sale without any problem - I believe because they could see that I never downloaded it onto my Kindle.

How hard is it to transfer files from other devices? When I first started buying Kindle ebooks, and didn't know what I was doing, I accidentally created literarily a dozen or more devices, including the Reader and the Cloud. How difficult is it move everything to, say, the Cloud or the Reader? I have a first generation physical Kindle, that I plan to start using again, but I've misplaced it. I've got instructions, somewhere, though, that I think will tell me how to transfer files to it. |

I've returned 3-4 books since 2009, all for formatting issues. But have seen posts from users who returned books because they didn't like them. I think that is outside the spirit of the limitation. It was usually those users who ended up on the old Kindle forum, complaining because they couldn't return books any more, because Amazon removed the option from their account. That's like asking for a meal to be taken off the bill, after you've eaten most of it. |

The option appeared after 10 minutes or so. Heretofore, it's been usually within 1 minute. I'll be more patient from now on. However, it seems like Amazon grades a person on the basis of _how long_ it takes the customer to make the request after heshe purchases a book, and that person more frequently gets the dreaded "call this toll-free number to speak to a customer representative" message! They act like someone could make a (illegal) copy of the book within a minute or two! So, I try to request a return as soon as I realize that I've made a boo-boo. Yeah, I like the meal analogy. ha However, unless they've changed their policy, I think that _Audible_ lets a person--at least a member--return an audio book and exchange it for another one. I don't see the reason for the difference. Last edited by GtrsRGr8; 04-10-2019 at 06:52 PM. |

If you fat-thumb a purchase, it makes sense to immediately look for the Return for Refund option. But in the case of formatting issues, you won't know until you start the book. I always open a new book and scan through it a bit to make sure there are no glaring issues.
I did have to talk to CS one time, because the book in question was a Kindle gift, so the refund option wasn't there. The OCR errors in the book made it almost unreadable. But as mentioned, the option is only there for 7 days after purchase, except for those users who've returned too many books. It's my understanding that Amazon is the only one that offers a refund period at all. |

I assume that the ebooks with formatting issues, that you are talking about, are not ones which say, "formatting issues reported," on the product's [Aarrrgghhh! the automatic correction feature keeps putting the apostrophe in the wrong place!] webpages. And when such an issue occurs, doesn't Amazon automatically make the corrections to the ebooks that you have in your library (except for the rare instances when, for some reason, they can't, in which cases they send emails to you basically telling you, "you'll have to do it for yourself"?) If corrections are made there seems to be three possibilities. (a) If you have asked for automatic book updates then normally a new and updated copy will replace the current copy. If there are no current copies on your devices this will happen when you next download the book. The new copy will be marked as *new* as though you has just bought it. (b) If you don't have automatic book updates set or in some other circumstances that I don't understand an *Update available* will appear for the book in Manage My Content and Devices. From there you can request the update downloaded. (c) If the update is extensive enough that some or all notes or highlights may be lost. Amazon will email you, allowing you to choose to accept the update as in (b). Last edited by Little.Egret; 04-10-2019 at 08:16 PM. |

I think it's a necessity, given that pesky one-click order option. Sometimes I haven't realized I've fat-fingered a purchase until I get the confirmation email.
