I don't usually do the big Delphi books. The pictures and background isn't particularly of interest to me and at least some have subpar formatting (I forget which one it was, maybe Nathaniel Hawthorne, but the TOC only had book titles, but not chapters in the books). I have better luck getting the PD books from other sources.

Some of their earlier titles did, indeed, have some pretty crappy formatting. They've improved dramatically, however (in my opinion), on some of their more recent titles and on their updates - probably due to stiff competition, I would imagine.

You can buy the collections directly from Delphi. I've bought several recently; you get several zips with all the works as separate epubs and mobis. I've found the formatting to be quite acceptable.

Maybe I'll give them another go. I've been getting the bulk of my PD books from standardebooks and their excellence has spoiled me.

Before ebooks and Project Gutenberg, when I bought a paper PD book I always preferred Signet Classics. They were cheaper than the Penguin trades and had far more attractive covers than the similarly priced Bantam Classics. They also tended to have introductions by people you had actually heard of.

Anyway, found a few of the Signet Classics for $1.99 a piece on Amazon:

Billy Budd and Other Tales by Herman Melville
Main Street by Sinclair Lewis
Winesburg, Ohio by Sherwood Anderson
