Note that this is the "officially approved" abridged edition.
It seems that there have been a lot of The Gulag Archipelago's show up lately. Is there an anniversary of Solzhenitsyn's death, his release from the gulag, his birth, or something else?

The gulag was not reserved for citizens of the Soviet Union--I read just a few days ago that World War II German prisoners of war were sent there. I remember the article saying that their frozen bodies were stacked up like cord-wood. The gulags were part of the reason that only 1 out of 10 of those prisoners ever saw Germany again. (Moderator: Please! this is not a political post--the Soviet Union is dead; Germany is now a democracy and not inclined to aggression. What I've mentioned is history, not politics! History.).

Mussolini as Diplomat by Richard Lamb

First published 1997

Was Mussolini’s alliance with Hitler foreordained? Could Italy have been kept out of the Second World War? Did the policy of England’s Anthony Eden really push Mussolini into Hitler’s arms instead of luring him back to his former policy of friendship with Great Britain?

These are some of the intriguing questions which historian Richard Lamb asks about the Italian dictator’s foreign policy toward Germany, on the one hand, and Britain and France on the other before he plunged his country into the disastrous alliance with Hitler. Surprisingly, Mussolini began with a deep distrust of Hitler and feelings of friendship toward England as well as France, Italy’s World War I allies he hoped might stand up to Hitler’s aggressive intent. He despised Hitler’s antisemitism.

Lamb’s revisionist assessment of Mussolini’s diplomatic blunders in his relations to the other European powers is based on British and Italian documents finally released after more than half a century.

RICHARD LAMB is an eminent historian with eight books to his credit, including the highly praised War in Italy 1943–1945: A Brutal Story, which was a New York Times Notable Book of the Year and was short-listed for the Duff Cooper Prize. Lamb served with the British Eighth Army in Italy during World War II.

You just beat me to it!

Sometimes I'd like to know to whom a MobileReader's "smile" money goes to ( ), even though on some items the amount is miniscule or, like this one, non-existent (since the ebook is free). I wonder if Amazon has a list of verboten "charities"? I can't of any, offhand, that would deserve being on such a list, but surely there are some.

I guess I could have changed "smile" to "www". But I'm pretty sure it goes to YOUR chosen charity, not mine, when you click the link. And if you don't have one chosen, it probably goes nowhere.

Gtrs mine goes to a wonderful animal rescue charity by the name of Flying Fur Animal Rescue. The gentleman who runs it has a small plane (and a recently added bus) that he flys (or drives if the weather won't work for flying) to North Caroline to pick up dogs and cats from over full kill shelters there to fly to Pennsylvania and parts of New England where the shelters need them due to better spay and neuter programs leading to too few animals to adopt. To date he has flown or used the recently added bus to rescue over 1200 animals. It is a fully licensed charity and recently Path 88 Productions has done a documentary on it that is now making the rounds of US film festivals!

I don’t think I have ever had any digital purchase count towards smile charity. Whenever a “physical” purchase qualifies I see a notification. Has anyone ever gotten a notification of credit for smile donation for a purchase you didn’t make?

Thanks to the people, who posted above, about the "smile" program. I didn't think about the possibility of the money going to my charity of choice, even though they asked me, when I signed up, where I wanted it to go.

I've still got to find out why I get "smile" notifications on Amazon webpages (a minority of them) for certain types of products, but not others. Does anyone have any suggestions as to where to check on Amazon's site? I assume that there is something about it in one or more of their "help" files, but I don't have any idea which one(s) to check.

BTW--someone mentioned where their "smile" money went to. FWIW--my paltry amount goes to a very small college that I went to, a few decades ago. When I was a student there, donations to them were not as high as they are now (for reasons that I won't get into here); now, however, they seem to be much better funded. But colleges always seem to need more money, even the ones that have huge endowments.

One of the college administrators at my alma mater explained it as private colleges and universities often have capital expenditures that require some borrowing. The lenders look to see what percentage of the alumni donate, and they loan at lower rates to the institutions which have a larger percentage of alumni who donate. The presumption is that if the institution falls on hard times, and needs money to pay off the loan, they're likely to get it if a large percentage of the alumni already have a history of giving. Therefore, while the institutions always try to get you to donate more, they'd rather see you give a pittance, like $10, than nothing at all.

I didn't know about that particular situation. However, I did know that corporations which give to schools do look at what percentage of the alums give. I suppose that the reasoning is, "If the alums don't care enough about this school to financially support it, then why should we?"

Your post also brought up a question in my mind--do corporations now look at the "smile" donations by alums the same way that they do other donations by alums? My thought is, "probably not."
