Tolkien
Saw the trailer yesterday.
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt3361792/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1 I'm looking forward to it, although I'll probably skip it at the theaters. |

Short answer: no. So long as you have usual clearance for any copyright material you use, eg photos, texts, video.

Far safer to make documentaries about dead people than living. The dead can’t sue for libel.

That is what I thought. I rather have an objective documentary, and not one "authorized" by the estate. I believe the only reason the estate would rubber stamp it is if it doesn't hurt their interests in making money.

The movie doesn't seem to be a documentary in the slightest, but rather a movie with young Tolkien as the central character. The reason I ask is more from the stand point of is this going to play fast and loose with the facts or not.

I *really* hope the documentary explores Tolkien's ardent Christian faith as a devout Catholic--which heavily influenced all of his major works. As opposed to turning it into a dryasdust recital of Tolkien's personal chronology. Or worse, a militant secularist scrubbing to sanitize or even reinterpret the historical record.
If it does include a more-or-less accurate and respectful coverage of Tolkien's Christian world view (as I thought the Shadowlands movie did about CS Lewis, despite some artistic license with the facts), I'd look forward to seeing it. When I see a documentary on any important historical figure--Christian, atheist, agnostic, or adherent of some world religion--I want to know what they really thought, what influenced their thought and work most, regardless what I may think of them. |

Have a look at the 1950s British war film the Dambusters. It is almost a dramatised documentary. It certainly does not play fast and loose with any major facts. In the IMDB notes it does mention a couple of minor historical inaccuracies.

That's true, looking again at the IMDB entry it's categorized as "Biography, Drama." So, historical fiction, or fiction based on history, as Shadowlands. Given that it purports to be biographical, I'd still hold the line on my wish to see them be accurate about his formative views in the film.
