College students Kenji and Dylan stumble upon a strange recording in the background of an obscure song. It's a woman's voice, uttering a string of seemingly random characters. Upon further inspection, the song appears to have been embedded with a hidden message. Attempting to crack the mysterious code and becoming obsessed with the recording, Kenji and Dylan set off in search of answers. With every turn in the road however, the puzzle only seems to grow more complicated. And sinister.

Retired Vietnam vet Reggie Cash is also drawn in by this message, and before long both he and the two college students are on the trail of the mysterious woman featured in the recording. But who is she, and where is she leading them?

As things fall into place and strange events unfold, the three of them begin to wish that they'd never heard the recording at all...

I've not read anything by Mr. Ibsen before, but I remember the Satanic Panic of the '80's and the concern about backmasking and hidden messages in rock songs. It was all nonsense of course, but it seems like fertile ground for a good horror story.

Not yet. So far, the only McCammon I've read is Baal, The Night Boat and Swan Song (and I saw the '80's Twilight Zone adaptation of Nightcrawlers).

I have several of his ebooks I've picked up on sale here and there. Just need to read them.

BTW I picked up a few of Laymon's books upon your recommendation. Almost finished with 'Come Out Tonight'. I picked up Stinger by McCammon but haven't started it yet. Boy's Life too I think I have. Definitely like his writing. Check out Mine! Great book.

Ouch! I gave Come Out Tonight one and a half stars. That one and One Rainy Night I just didn't like.

The ones I've liked the most so far have been In The Dark, Island and The Woods Are Dark. Darkness Tell Us was very silly (well, all his books are very silly), but I still remember it pretty well, so that says something.

I've heard The Travelling Vampire Show is one of his best.

I picked up Stinger by McCammon but haven't started it yet. Boy's Life too I think I have. Definitely like his writing. Check out Mine! Great book.

Stinger sounds like a '50's monster movie, something along the lines of Tremors. That's been high on my must read list for a while. Mine is on there as well.

Boy's Life I've only heard good things about. It's considered his best (or at least a tie with Swan Song). But to be honest, I'll likely read Stinger and Mine first.
