I'm amused at SYKM's description of the protagonist in this series, "Hackberry Holland, a hard-drinking lawyer, Korean War POW, progressive Democrat, now a sheriff, in Texas", especially given that this was published in 1971...

A Murder of No Consequence is the first in the Inspector Ruiz series by James Garcia Woods, which per SYKM is a pen name for Alan Rustage, who wrote many more titles using the pen name, Sally Spencer. Whew!
