An excellent programme, I agree. A new series of it is currently showing on the BBC.

Would this not perhaps be a better fit in the SF & Fantasy thread, Murray?

Hook or Crook is the 20th in the Keith Calder series by Gerald Hammond. It is free right now at Kindle US and Kindle UK.

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07MX8FGZK
Kindle UK: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Hook-Crook-...dp/B07MX8FGZK/

Spoiler:
Quote:
Professional fisherman Wallace James and his pupil Eric Bell are fishing for salmon when they discover the body of a man in the river, a fishhook embedded in his cheek.

At first it looks like the man accidentally slipped and fell while fishing. But where’s his fishing rod and the rest of his equipment? The dead man is Bernard Hollister. He hadn’t been in town long and already he’d come to blows with Imad Vahhaji, a quiet, soft-spoken Arab. When questioned about his altercation with Hollister, Vahhaji says nothing. Hollister had worked for many years in the Middle East. Do the reasons for his untimely death lie in his exotic past?

Born in 1926, Gerald Hammond lived in Scotland, where he retired from his profession as an architect in 1982 to pursue his love of shooting and fishing and to write full time. After his first novel, Fred in Situ, was published in 1965, Gerald became a prolific author with over 70 published novels. Most of his novels were published under his own name, but he also wrote under the pseudonyms Arthur Douglas and Dalby Holden.

Anne Perry appears to be taking a leaf from Lindsey Davis (Falco/Flavia Albia) and has started a series featuring Daniel Pitt, son of Charlotte and Thomas Pitt, the protagonists in one of her other long-running series.

Twenty-one Days is the first in the short (so-far) series, and it has dropped to $2.99 at Kindle and Kobo US.

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B073YX2G6B
Kobo US: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/twenty-one-days-3

Spoiler:
Quote:
In the first book of an all-new series, a young lawyer races to save his client from execution, putting him at odds with his own father: Thomas Pitt, head of London’s Special Police Branch.

“[Anne] Perry’s excellent new series launch expertly takes the Pitts into a new century.”—Library Journal (starred review)

1910: Twenty-five-year-old Daniel Pitt is a junior barrister in London and eager to prove himself, independent of his renowned parents’ influence. And the new case before him will be the test. When his client, arrogant biographer Russell Graves, is found guilty of murdering his wife, Daniel is dispatched to find the real killer before Graves faces the hangman’s noose—in only twenty-one days.

Could Mrs. Graves’s violent death have anything to do with her husband’s profession? Someone in power may be framing the biographer to keep damaging secrets from coming to light. It is a theory that leads Daniel’s investigation unexpectedly to London’s Special Branch—and, disturbingly, to one of his father’s closest colleagues.

Caught between duty to the law and a fierce desire to protect his family, Daniel must call on his keen intellect—and trust his natural instincts—to find the truth in a tangle of dark deception, lest an innocent man hang for another’s heinous crime.

Justice Hall is the 6th in the Mary Russell/Sherlock Holmes series by Laurie R. King. It has dropped to $2.99 at Kindle and Kobo US. I've quite liked this series, titles don't go on sale very often, and are very expensive when not on sale, so happy to see this one.

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000FBFMW0
Kobo US: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/justice-hall

Spoiler:
Quote:
Only hours after Holmes and Russell return from solving one murky riddle on the moor, another knocks on their front door . . . literally.

It’s a mystery that begins during the Great War, when Gabriel Hughenfort died amidst scandalous rumors that have haunted the family ever since. But it’s not until Holmes and Russell arrive at Justice Hall, a home of unearthly perfection set in a garden modeled on Paradise, that they fully understand the irony echoed in the family motto, Justicia fortitudo mea est: “Righteousness is my strength.”

A trail of ominous clues comprise a mystery that leads from an English hamlet to the city of Paris to the wild prairie of the New World. The trap is set, the game is afoot; but can Holmes and Russell catch an elusive killer--or has the murderer caught them?

Tough Cookie is the 9th in the Goldy Schulz series by Diane Mott Davidson. It has dropped to £0.99 at Kindle UK. Titles in this series only rarely go on sale, so if you are lucky enough to live in the UK, or can travel there, grab it if you want it.

link: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07M7WBNQ8

Spoiler:
Quote:
When caterer Goldy Schulz is offered a temporary stint hosting a cooking show for PBS, she jumps at the chance. After all, she could use the money—not to mention the great exposure. Plus taping the shows at Colorado’s posh Killdeer Ski Resort will be fun. A little cooking, a little chitchat. What could go wrong?

The answer: everything! When Goldy has to do one of her shows live for a PBS telethon, the broadcast is riddled with culinary catastrophes—from the Chesapeake Crab Cakes right down to the Ice-Capped Gingersnaps. But the deadliest dish of all comes after the cameras go off—and a baffling accident claims a life. Then a series of suspicious mishaps places Goldy’s own life in jeopardy, and she knows she’d better whip up her own crime-solving recipe, and fast—before a deadly dash of danger ends her cooking career once and for all.…

Robicheaux: You Know My Name is now £0.99 at Kindle UK. It seems to have an added tag line in the UK, but the blurbs are similar.

There is another James Lee Burke title also on sale for £0.99 right now. It's the first in his shorter and lesser known Hackberry Holland series: Lay Down My Sword and Shield. I'm amused at SYKM's description of the protagonist in this series, "Hackberry Holland, a hard-drinking lawyer, Korean War POW, progressive Democrat, now a sheriff, in Texas", especially given that this was published in 1971...

A Murder of No Consequence is the first in the Inspector Ruiz series by James Garcia Woods, which per SYKM is a pen name for Alan Rustage, who wrote many more titles using the pen name, Sally Spencer. Whew!

In any case, I've just now noticed that this title has been £0.99 at Kindle UK for quite some time now.

link: https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B07HRQW153

Spoiler:
Quote:
What could be deadlier than war?

On the eve of the Spanish Civil War murder on the streets of Madrid has become so commonplace that it passes largely unnoticed.

For Inspector Paco Ruiz the death of a young woman in Retiro Park has a significance that even he does not fully understand. Battling against official hostility, and attempts on his own life, Ruiz finds himself being pulled deeper and deeper into a dark web of lies and treachery.

As well as providing a thrilling and intriguing mystery, A Murder of No Consequence paints a vivid picture of a society – and a way of life – on the verge of collapse.

James Garcia Woods was educated at the universities of Wales, Manchester and Oxford. Before becoming a full-time writer, he taught in England, Iran and Spain. He has lived with his wife in Madrid since 1979.

Now £0.99 at Kindle UK. This has been a price drop since the beginning of the month, so probably part of the monthly sale, so if you want it, you should probably grab it quick...
