Thanks for this. I'd always intended to try some 'men's adventure' books and The Executioner or The Survivalist seemed to be the places to start.

Marvel's very lucky that Don Pendleton didn't sue them over The Punisher, which is basically a swipe of The Executioner.

I've read a lot of the Destroyer series and very little of the Executioner, but they seemed quite different to me. Destroyer is extremely tongue-in-cheek, while the Executioner seemed to take itself seriously.

Presumably "Don Pendleton" is a "house name"? It seems unlikely that any one person could actually write so many books!

True - I only read a handful of each but I remember enjoying Destroyer more - Remo is more of a reluctant hero who has to be brow-beaten by the 90 yo Korean mentor to keep him focused. They botched the movie but I could see it as a pretty cool TV series some day...

Five titles in the Shetland series (2-6) by Ann Cleeves are £0.99 as part of the UK Kindle Daily Deal. The first title in the series, Raven Black, which, per SYKM, won a Gold Dagger in 2006, is already £0.98 if you want to read in order.

Titles include:
  • White Nights
  • Red Bones
  • Blue Lightning
  • Dead Water
  • Thin Air
The link picks up all five of these, as well as Raven Black. It also picks up The Crow Trap, which is the first in Cleeves' Vera Stanhope series, and a couple of short stories:

He wrote a lot of books, but franchised the Executioner series out relatively early on.

Quote:
Don franchised his Executioner characters to Harlequin's Gold Eagle Imprint in 1980 after writing Executioner thirty-eight, Satan's Sabbath. Gold Eagle's program has resulted in nearly 900 Mack Bolan books published since that time with several spin-off series: Able Team, Phoenix Force, Stonyman, and Super Bolan. Don was a Consulting Editor with the Harlequin program until his death but did not write any of the Harlequin books, which have all been written by a team of writers.

I have to admit that I (even though female ) bit on this one, mostly out of curiosity. I'm not sure it'll get to the top of my TBR list soon, but I have several long airplane flights coming up later this year, so probably then.

I'm not sure it counts as "mens adventure", but the titles in the Richard Mariner nautical thriller series by Peter Tonkin go on sale a lot. I know because Tonkin also has a short self-pub Elizabethan-era mystery series (strange combo - go figure!), so the Mariner titles pop up all the time in my eReaderIQ feed. Per SYKM, the Mariner series also includes a wife though, so I'm not sure it counts as "mens adventure" . I posted a few of them a long time ago, but stopped due to sheer volume. If anyone wants me to post this series, let me know and I will...

Thanks, mp. I knew that there were "many hundreds" (at least!) of books, so it did seem implausible that he'd written them all .

The multi-award winning/nominated title, Mystic River, by Dennis Lehane, is a US Kindle Daily deal today at $1.99, matched at Kobo US.

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/Mystic-River-...dp/B000JMKNWE/
Kobo US: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/mystic-river-2

Spoiler:
Quote:
The New York Times bestselling novel from Dennis Lehane is a gripping, unnerving psychological thriller about the effects of a savage killing on three former friends in a tightly knit, blue-collar Boston neighborhood.

When they were children, Sean Devine, Jimmy Marcus, and Dave Boyle were friends. But then a strange car pulled up to their street. One boy got into the car, two did not, and something terrible happened -- something that ended their friendship and changed all three boys forever.

Twenty-five years later, Sean is a homicide detective. Jimmy is an ex-con who owns a corner store. And Dave is trying to hold his marriage together and keep his demons at bay -- demons that urge him to do terrible things. When Jimmy's daughter is found murdered, Sean is assigned to the case. His investigation brings him into conflict with Jimmy, who finds his old criminal impulses tempt him to solve the crime with brutal justice. And then there is Dave, who came home the night Jimmy's daughter died covered in someone else's blood.

A tense and unnerving psychological thriller, Mystic River is also an epic novel of love and loyalty, faith and family, in which people irrevocably marked by the past find themselves on a collision course with the darkest truths of their own hidden selves.

Scot Free (properly spelled ) is the first in the short two-book Last Ditch series by Catriona McPherson, whose longer Dandy Gilver series I've quite enjoyed - at least on the rare occasions when the titles in that series go on sale.

Scot Free has dropped to $0.99 at Kindle US, not matched at Kobo US, at least as of now.

Spoiler:
Quote:
For Scottish-Born Marriage Counselor Lexy Campbell, the American Dream Becomes a California Nightmare

Lexy Campbell fell in love and left her native Scotland for a golden life in California—hitched to a hunk, building her marriage counseling practice, living the dream. Six months later she's divorced, broke, and headed home. There's just one last thing. Lexy's only client—sweet little old Mrs. Bombarro—is in jail for murdering her husband with a fireworks rocket.

Lexy knows the cops have got it wrong; all she needs is a few days to prove it and somewhere cheap to sleep at night. But checking into the Last Ditch Motel brings an unexpected slice of life and a whole world of trouble.

not matched at Kobo US, but also on sale at Kindle UK, for £0.91: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B071VXZD1H
