Coincidentally, I just got through listening to the audiobook _Carthage Must Be Destroyed_ (allegedly what Cato said after each one of his speeches on the floor of the (Roman) Senate.

For sure, the book deals with the three Punic Wars, and some other history about Rome and Carthage's highly dysfunctional relationship with each other, but the great majority of the book is about Hannibal.

Resident MobileRead comedian Fluribus' more-scholarly suggestion I'm sure is a gr8 one; however, if you like the kind of stuff in it, I highly recommend that you also put _Carthage Must Be Destroyed_ on your wishlist, if it's not currently on sale.

Why Is Sex Fun?: The Evolution of Human Sexuality is an older title by Jared Diamond that has dropped to £1.99 at Kindle UK.

Diamond is perhaps better known as the author of the Pulitzer Prize-winning Guns, Germs, and Steel; and of Collapse; both of which I have read, and really liked (enough to even re-read big chunks of). I haven't read this one, but on to the TBR pile it goes....

Why are humans one of the few species to have sex in private? Why do humans have sex any day of the month or year, including when the female is pregnant, beyond her reproductive years, or between her fertile cycles? Why are human females one of the few mammals to go through menopause?

Human sexuality seems normal to us but it is bizarre by the standards of other animals. Jared Diamond argues that our strange sex lives were as crucial to our rise to human status as were our large brains. He also describes the battle of the sexes in the human and animal world over parental care, and why sex differences in the genetic value of parental care provide a biological basis for the all-too-familiar different attitudes of men and women towards extramarital sex.

I had never thought, before, of that campaign being the longest one in World War II, but after doing some thinking about it, I believe that that description fits!

For all intents and purposes, the campaign ended a couple of years or so before the end of WWII. The British and Americans finally got the tools and strategies to take care of the submarine problem. It finally got to the point that for a German sub to go out on a mission was basically suicidal. When it got to that point, Admiral Doenitz left them in their "bombproof" pens to sit out (or I guess that it would be float out ) the rest of the War.

The theme of the above posted book covers well-documented stuff. What is very, very sparsely covered anywhere in "the West," it seems, is the very similar situation that the Soviets faced with Lend-Lease items being able to reach them by ship, to their warm-weather ports in their north. I know almost nothing about the whole campaign, except the fact that the Soviets finally, too, found answers to their German submarine problem. I would love to find and read a book on that subject; there's probably some video clips, about it, at YouTube, that would satisfy some of my interest . . . .

The Murmansk convoys took horrendous losses. Besides the U-boats, there were aerial attacks from Norway plus the possibility of a sortie by the battleships Tirpitz and Scharnhorst.

You might be interested in one of these. The Woodman and Walling books are full price. The books by Edwards is quite inexpensive.

I thought that the main port was Murmansk, but there was some doubt there, so I left it out. I don't remember what province that the city was in; I'm curious as to whether or not the Nazi's ever controlled it.

Aerial attacks came from Norway . . . . another piece of information that I didn't know. May I clarify something? Norway was not friends with Nazi Germany--the country was _occupied_ by the Nazi's at that time. That allowed the Nazi's to make the flights from Norwegian soil. At least one of the two ships--Scharnhortz or Tirpitz--were moored on the Norwegian coastER. Personally, I have to believe that it was because it/they wouldn't have stood a chance against Allied attacks by their ships out on the open water--official records might say otherwise. To get us back on topic a little bit, the Nazi's might not have liked having the presence of Soviet submarines around, either. The Brits had an answer in basically using the ship for bombing practice. They ended up dropping a 1,000 lb. "Tall Boy" bomb dead center on the ship. I need not say any more.

So much to learn . . . .

The Tallboy was 12.000 lb. Second-largest non-nuclear bomb used in WWII (after its even bigger brother, the Grand Slam).

The other main Northern convoy port was Arkhangelsk, but that was further in on the White Sea. Murmansk is much closer to North Cape.

The siege of Murmansk was quite devastating - almost as destructive as Leningrad and Stalingrad - but it was not captured.
