I just finished Star Trek Stargazer: Enigma by Michael Jan Friedman and it ended in a cliffhanger. Grrrrrr. So I guess I'll go right on to the next book Maker. Also the last book in the series!

I am not quite halfway through the Beastie Boys memoir, and I need a break.
The book is done in an artsy style that might be good in a coffee table book, but annoying as an ebook, because I am turning formatting on and off regularly just so I can read it. I need something comfortable and amusing right now. |

This was a great ending to the trilogy. Lots of action and suspense. This book explains where and how the Borg came into existence. Good stuff. Easily the best of David Mack I've read. Also, I appreciate Simon & Schuster's 99 cents promotion. Without it I would have never discovered this wonderful trilogy. Rated B+ [4 stars].
Next a 2017 purchase, Medicus by Ruth Downie. |

Monday is a braindead day for me after a 10 hour night shift, neither neuron up to reading non-English material. So instead I'm relaxing with Lauren Willig's The Secret of the Pink Carnation and really enjoying it! It's FUN - unpretentious, undemanding, but still competently written, it's a very promising sart to a new "timepass" series for me

Reading the Memoirs of Vidocq, though not in French. Will eventually put up an ebook of it.

Finally decided to start The Expanse since the series is almost at the end. I liked the series as well and will be interested to see how it does on Amazon.

Finished Shift by Hugh Howey. Next up, West of Eden by Harry Harrison.
Shift was not quite as good as its predecessor Wool, but it was still quite good. I'll come back to finish the trilogy - third book is Dust - soon. Last edited by haertig; 02-04-2019 at 10:37 PM. |

I've been away on a long trip, during which I read the following:
"The Penguin Book of Hebrew Verse", by T. Carmi. Books 19.5, 20, 21, 22 of the "Jack Reacher" series. "Crocodile on the Sandbank" by Elizabeth Peters. "Music to my Sorrow", by Mercedes Lackey & Rosemary Edghill. "Twilight at the Well of Souls", by Jack L. Chalker. "Old Soldiers", by David Weber. "Bridge of the Separator" by Harry Turtledove. |

Yesterday I read "The Cross-time Engineer" by Leo Frankowski, which comprises the first third of the Baen "Conrad Starguard" omnibus that I bought in 2004. A very enjoyable time travel romp about a young engineer accidentally transported back to 13th century Poland, and his attempts to kick-start an early industrial revolution to hold off the Mongol invasion he knows will be coming in a few years' time. Extremely enjoyable.

It took me a month, but i FINALLY finished Nicola Griffith's sweeping Hild. I was somewhat blindsided by the ending as it felt like she just stopped, rather than ending the story. I know there is meant to be another book, but I am not holding my breath with Griffith's health.
Then I promptly started devouring Ada Palmer's The Will to Battle (the third in her Terra Ignota series, which I love). |

![]() I purchased the first 3 seasons through Amazon Video anyway, so nothing much is going to change for me with season 4. I enjoy the books, too. Eagerly awaiting Tiamat's Wrath in March. |

After starting the year with several duds, I feel as if I've hit my stride, as my current reads all seem likely to end up four stars and will do much to pull my mean ranking to a respectable level.
Next up (once I finish Halliburton) will be A Delicate Truth by John le Carré for the February discussion at the New Leaf Book Club. |

I believe Netflix had worldwide streaming rights so I'm surprised they didn't pick up the series in US. |
