Petition to have Android 6 for older Onyx BOOX ?
My ONYX BOOX i86 HDML PLUS
have Android 4.0.x ( as all the others ONYX BOOK sold 2-3 years ago). I cannot read DRM ebook , so even if for hardware side is ok, due to the fact that Onyx doesn't maintain and upgrade the older models to new Android, we cannot use properly Adobe DRM and we cannot use application that distribute DRM ebook/pdf. As ONYX BOOK new version have Android 6.x why Onyx force us to have an obsolete device? Onyx now use Android 6.x for the newer model, why Onyx doesn't support older models? In a long run this Beauvoir will not be rewarding. Do you like to make a petition to ask Onyx to update Android version even for the Older Onyx models? |

I would point out that even the new Boox Poke only has Android 4.4.
Those models running Android 6 seem to be exclusively those with a 1.6GHz quad core and 2GB of memory. This noticeable specs bump suggests to me that Android 6 might not run so well on older, lower spec models. |

Instead, I am very worried of Onyx producing hardware feature crippled, basically unbuyable devices: no expandable memory, no buttons, no audio jack. It is like Onyx leasing butlers with limited memory, mostly deaf, and dumb. (Which is also nonsensical commercially, because it just alienates a slice of customers without gaining positive tradeoffs - in Carlo Cipolla's terms, that can be classified as economically "stupid".) Good for you: I would also stop reading altogether before financing such a criminal perverted endavour. I am happy you stand on a high moral ground and refuse compromising with satanic lunacy in all its forms. I would have mentioned Hrafn's shining avatar, would he not have beat me to posting. Bravo. |

For expandable memory and buttons, there's the Monte Cristo 3 & 4 (the MC3 may be identical to the non-Pro Kepler). For buttons and audio jack, there's the Max 2 Pro. (And probably a few others as well.) It's a tad piecemeal, both across products and between their internal vs their 'OEM' (as they refer to their flowery-named Russo-American market) models, but it isn't entirely lacking. Quote:
![]() DRM is always liable to stop working somewhere somehow -- whether it is because the vendor goes out of business and so their servers shut down, because the vendor suddenly decides that they no longer have the rights to the product, because you crossed some invisible geospatial blockade, because of client hardware or software incompatibility, or because of some freakish unexplained bug which could be because of all, any or none of the above. Therefore the wise buyer either strips DRM off everything as soon as they buy it, or avoids buying DRM-crippled products in the first place. Last edited by Hrafn; 02-04-2019 at 11:51 PM. |

I'm don't like DRM at all.

So if someone like we can start a petition to ask to upgrade older Onyx models, as is something a good practice to Onyx customers. |

I think it's not possible. It needs a better compatible microprocessor.

I've got the same device, Android 4.0.4 installed.
While 6.0 would be great, I would be okay with a working 4.4 version rom available. The jump from SDK version 15 (4.0.4) to 19 (4.4) seems small but it's required for a lot of apps as a minimum. A petition is great and all but customers asked Onyx countless times already these years about updates and the answers were always the same dodgy lines. Now i86 is basically a legacy device in their eyes which is funny. |
