That's pretty much what we try to do here: if someone points out a file that seems suspicious to them, we remove it from being downloadable and try and figure out what the story really is with the book in question. Once we do that we proceed accordingly.

As it happens, when we realized that we had an issue vis a vis U.S. copyright law with a chunk of our uploads we split the hosting to one server in Canada and a second one in the U.S. so that we could host the most content we could in compliance with the relevant laws as best we could figure them out, great murky mess that they are. At the time we mods actually divided up the uploads between us, and checked them to see which server they belonged on. That was quite a mess, and we had a lot fewer books then than we do now.

At the same time, I don't really feel that it's a hosting site's responsibility to go through everything that's uploaded to it and check for legality -- there's just too much to do that with if the site has any quantity of content at all.
Yes I do recall reading of accounts being closed simply because someone made a complaint. Common sense is an obvious requirement, and unfortunately you can't depend on it always being used. The idea is to not trample on ANYONE's rights.

A hosting site can't keep track of everything on their site, but if something is called to their attention, they should check it out and take appropriate action. AND they should be sure to make it possible and relatively easy for people to report possible violations.

God! Let it go! Honest people will do the best they can to make sure they are operating within the parameters of the law, and dishonest ones don't care.

You've moved beyond dead horse territory here.

I understand that, and I am relatively new myself having joined and then gone up the mountain for most of the ski season. And we get it. Not every site that claims to have free books for download is 100% legit. Buyer Beware. It's still a Dead Horse.

So, getting back to the thread, what do we have for a continuation of "list of best free books"?

Did I mention MobileRead?

Well, of course - you're on this site right now!

For modern, legal, free ebooks, and I just added a bunch for Sony and Kindle. Time limited so get them while they're free.

Plus lots more that are not time limited.

How do we know that that list can be trusted, and that the books listed on it really are free? As you yourself said, any site can make that claim.

Oh, yes and don't forget that Amazon, Sony, Tor, and others have special deals right now.

Some are even free from the sites I listed.

Harry, you should probably stay away, as my website would probably make your cybook crash. Or the world explode. Or something similar. Thanks for coming along and joining the attack though, it was nice of you to think of me.

Do you people ever feel lame and pathetic because you have to first imagine I'm doing something worthy of attack, and then gang up on me? Because from out here, it looks pretty bad.

The question was where can they find free ebooks right? Well my site is a great place to find free modern legal ebooks. It's a shame that you are so threatened every time someone mentions a site that is not mobileread. But why should it be everyone else's problem? Some visitors here may be interested in what other sites have to offer.

Oh, and if your question were sincere, you'd already know the answer, since I've said it quite clearly several times. Darned obvious facts getting in the way of your clever attacks.

Harry asked a simple question, cmbs.

Why not answer it, if only to satisfy the newer people who may be reading this thread and wondering where they can obtain free ebooks.

Everyone on this site would like to find even more sites for free ebooks - assuming they're legal, of course. That was the intent of the original poster.

In all fairness, however, I'm confused about this phrase that you use: "you people." A number of people here have asked you some sincere questions - questions (I believe) that you originally asked of readers of this thread, as you yourself moved the thread onto a side-branch and away from the main emphasis of the original poster who opened the thread. However, that was a natural progression of the thread's organicitiy; nothing wrong there.

I just don't understand your sense of persecution when someone asks you a question. You've asked us questions, right?

Sincerely,
Don

It depends on what you mean with "best they can". It is unreasonable to spend a lot of time to check the legality. So you will probably just make a snap decision about it and follow this. And I think this is all that can be expected.

If I find something on a web page I assumed it is OK to download it since I believe web pages that I find are so public that people will complain if it is not.
