You must, repeat MUST, install a consumer-use firmware build, even if it is the same firmware version. Nothing here is intended to be run on a factory-use firmware build, other than the jail break vector. In fact, the only thing which is intended to run on a factory-use firmware build are the Q.A. routines it includes. That is, do not be so surprised that it does not run as expected for a consumer-use firmware, since it is NOT a consumer-use firmware. Eliminate the PEBKAC from your observations and report back on any changes from what you have observed above. Last edited by knc1; 01-30-2019 at 04:16 AM. |

--- Also, are the above posts saying that the blocking update folder update.partial (whatever that is called) and the paperwhite trying to phone home so often causes the lower battery life? Last edited by arooni; 01-30-2019 at 01:32 PM. |

During normal restart, I ended up with the kindle tree screen.
I have jailbroken the kindle and updated to 5.10.2. Everything was working fine and have previously successfully restarted it. I have held down the power button for 40 seconds and the screen kinda flashes but then doesn't otherwise do anything. Hope I didn't accidentally brick it :\ .. and trying not to panic ... only thing i can think i may have changed was setting up usb networking to launch on startup. but of course i had the device in airplane mode before restarting :\ battery was at 90% before the restart. and right now its plugged in to the wall outlet and the green light (full charge) charge indicator is on. but still seeing the guy under the tree reading the kindle. ----- update ; finally seems to be booting. man that gave me quite a scare. anything i should change/do differently to prevent this from happening? ... never restart it? ![]() Last edited by arooni; 01-30-2019 at 02:18 PM. |

Remove the network "start automatically" control until you figure out what is happening.
Note: The above is a paraphrase of the warning in the release post of USB networking and in the included readme materials. |

Just to check if I got that right. I jailbroke my Kindle PW4 with the stuff mentioned in the starting post and it boots up and everything seems to be fine. But if I got your right, I need to update my Kindle to the same Version (5.10.0.2) now to have a consumer-use firmware and not the factory firmware I had from the get-go and that is linked in the starting post?

Since that specific version is only available pre-installed on Kindles from the factory, in this case, you'd need to install at least 5.10.1.2. I think only that and 5.10.2 have been released so far for the PW4. |

I tried to uninstall USBNetwork via KUAL and even after a restart its still there. I also disabled it and if i click usbnetworkstatus i see: "N * USBNetwork: disabled (usbms, sshd up?) * " Also tried disabling the font hack too from KUAL. I guess the solution is to not restart, and at least restart seems to finish plugged in, but I'd say the current state isn't ideal. Are there logs somewhere that I can see why reboot is hanging? ==== update : nevermind; it does finish on its own; just need to allow for 4-5 minutes for a reboot. still seems long; but then again there are lot of magical things running on kindle that it didn't have running before thanks to you folks ![]() Last edited by arooni; 01-31-2019 at 03:05 PM. |

Do you have your indexing of books finished?
How many books do you have on Kindle? |

You really should not try to restart the device with the USB cable connected to a PC.
That can force the Kindle system to do some really crazy things. At least wait for the restart to complete. Note: A "normal" restart can take several days, since the start-up sequence includes file system checks and auto-repairs as required. Repairing the file system on an eMMC device can be VERY slow. |

Once the system is full up, then connecting a wall charger will not cause it to try and export the user storage partition over the USB cable. What it will do, while still in the start-up process is too hard to guess. For instance, we do know that the early part of the boot process will briefly export the user storage partition as part of loading the driver(s). |

Hi there
just received PW4 8Gb with SO G00PP fw 5.10.0.2 and I need JB now, because if it updates the firmware it will be too late. WiFi not conneted. Now question, for the moment I don't need any other hacks therefore no need install mrpi/kual/something else, right? Do my way finished after install hotfix/bridge and manual update to 5.10.1.2 for example? |

1) The jail break is, well, the jail break. 2) The (increasingly more wrongly named) "hotfix" is what makes the jail break (and itself) viral across Amazon updates. (It installs using UYK - only requires the jb to be installed) Later: 3) MrPI (does not require KUAL, since it can be run by a search bar command) 4) Everything / Anything else can wait. The "hotfix" was correctly named when it was created, over time it has had features added and functions improved so that the original name is becoming more than a bit of an understatement. ![]() Last edited by knc1; 02-01-2019 at 08:09 AM. |
