Kindle Oasis Brightness Difference
Today I received my second Kindle Oasis from Amazon (new in the box) and am not happy at all about the brightness. The Oasis on the left is the new one and on the right my older one and they are both turned up to 24. Quite a difference in brightness. The new one is not near as bright and as you can has a yellowish tinge. The older one on the right is much whiter thus brighter. I'm not at all happy about this. Any ideas on what's going on? Thanks.

Nothing is going on. The differences between screens are common. Do you usually read with the light all the way up? If not, how are the screens with the light at your usual level?

Sirtel. I usually read with the light set at maximum (except in bright light) because my eyes are quite bad and will not be getting any better at 68 years old. It charges quickly so I never worry about battery depletion. It's just that after reading on my first Oasis with its white screen makes the new one look very anemic to me. I suppose if I didn't have my original I'd have no frame of reference.

Is this common for such a large difference in brightness between the Kindle Oasis?

I have had a few different Oasises due to issues with the battery. Each one has had a screen like the one on the left, with a sepia-like tone. The one on the right looks more like the screen I had on my Voyage, which was noticeably a bluer brighter white. Maybe you should try a Voyage instead?

Pjama. Do you prefer the sepia tone screen? I'm going to send one of them back but I want what's best for my eyes and readability.

I learned a long time ago to not compare the screens that way. Just use the new one for a few days, and decide if it works ok for you.
We've had 9 Kindles, 5 had front-lit screens, and they all looked different when compared side by side. We had 2 Paperwhites, 2nd gen, that were as different as the examples here. Both were just fine to read on. I keep my Oasis light all the way up for daytime reading, just like the op. The screen and light temp are either ok, or not. It doesn't really matter how it compares to another device. |

Just a side note: having the brightness so high may contribute to macular degeneration. It might be better for your eyes to use a heavier, more bolded font with a lower light intensity.
I don't think there's much difference in the brightness of the two pictured screens, just a slight temperature difference: the new one has a warmer screen. You might find that you prefer this after a while, especially at night. |

I would prefer the brighter screen on the right, that's how my Oasis is also. I have 3 Voyages and only one is sepia like the one on the left on pic. It's true the screens on all of the Kindles will vary in color temp. I still kept the sepia Voyage, the screen clarity is good and it works well. That's pretty much my criteria for screens.

Yeah, in the end its all about your eyes. Not comparing them anymore, but just to sit down, or lay down and read. If your eyes do fine and you don't notice anything but the book, you are good. I can't even say which picture my Oasis is closer too. Its so hard for me to compare with computer screens being different. I guess I am somewhere in between.
![]() I never turn my light above 8, but I am light sensitive and can't stare into a bright lit screen when its darker. During bright day, I don't see a difference between 8 and say 20 so no point for me to turn it up that high. I have had this rule since the first lit Kindle. If I notice a "glow", I have it turned up to high. But those are my eyes. Others need the full light for their situation or they can't get any kind of visual of the letters. We are all dealt different eyes. |

I have 6 Paperwhites of different vintage as well as a Voyage. Three of the Paperwhites and the newest model. I also help a lot of my neighbors with their Paperwhites here in my retirement home so I see a lot of them.
When I put any of them side by side to compare there are pretty big differences. When I read with them they're all about the same. That's the only reasonable test. Barry |
