Open Road often has a lot of books on sale that they don't list in their sale emails. You may or may not have noticed that in many of their emails near the bottom, there will be a little box that says something about more titles on sale, and if you click, it takes you to a webpage with more sale titles. But they also seem to just randomly put even more titles on sale without any notification at all. The nice thing, though, is that if you miss an Open Road book on sale, it almost certainly will be on sale again soon. (Less often for the omnibuses, but even those, if you have patience, which I usually don't ) I use eReaderIQ for the few Open Road authors that I want to make sure I don't miss sales for...

Cross post to @Blossom's post in the Romance thread, where the Nook Book Bash sale is offering a lot of first (or second) in series titles for free right now, with coupon. Mostly romances, but there is a Mystery category, which has 31 titles. A lot of titles that are author-reclaimed re-pubs, some traditionally pubbed authors who have self-pub series on the side, and some that look self-pub, but higher quality self-pubs. A few authors I recognized included Carole Nelson Douglas, Terry Odell, Joanne Pence, Emma Jameson, Sara Rosett. There were also a few paranormal or more suspence-ish titles where I wouldn't recognize authors.

Anyway, they are free, so worth taking a look.

Sadly, if you hate Nook and its download issues, I checked a handful of titles and didn't see them matched at Kindle or Kobo US, at least as of yet.

I am pleased to report that Penguin Random House will release an omnibus of Martin Waddell's four Otley novels July 9, 2019, in paperback and eBook ($17.70 and $9.99, respectively).

I cannot overstate how much I enjoyed reading Otley Victorious forty years ago!

Badass Broads is a collection of titles by authors published by booksBnimble, including Julie Smith, Rob Swigart, Tracy Whiting, Adrienne Barbeau, and Shelley Singer. Several of the titles have been free before, either individually or in various collections, but this is a new (to me, at least) collection, and it's free too at Kindle US. I've read House of Blues, Paris a Go-Go, and Samson's Deal, and enjoyed all three.

Titles include:
  • House of Blues (Smith)
  • Tablet of Destinies (Swigart)
  • Paris a Go-Go (Whiting)
  • Love Bites (Barbeau)
  • Samson's Deal (Singer)
  • Torch Song (Singer)
link: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0723HRKMB

Spoiler:
Quote:
NOT YOUR MAMA'S MYSTERIES!

BADASS BROADS is an anthology of gripping page-turners—one each from SIX top-rated cozy mystery and female sleuth series, and it just does not get more badass than a vampyre taking down demons and werewolves, a modern-day Delphic Oracle in a race to save the world, “Foxy Brown” with a Ph.D., or even a New Orleans homicide cop doing it by the book … mostly. Six smart, capable, imperfect women, and more than one extraordinary—even “super-natural”— sleuth … all now available in a box set for a KILLER price!

Vol. 1: HOUSE OF BLUES, the FIFTH book in the Edgar Award-winning Skip Langdon mystery series by Julie Smith

Sugar Hebert arrives home from a ten-minute errand to find her husband shot to death and the rest of her family missing—including her daughter Reed, heir apparent to the Hebert restaurant dynasty, and Reed's eleven-month-old daughter.

New Orleans’ favorite six-foot ex-deb badass cop, Detective Skip Langdon, is on the hunt for the murderer. She finds the mob’s involved--and so are family secrets so ugly they’d make Tennessee Williams wince.

Vol. 2: TABLET OF DESTINIES, the SECOND Lisa Emmer Historical Thriller by Rob Swigart

In this action-packed historical thriller, an ancient, extremely dark religion gains terrifying vitality and power, as the pieces of a 3,000-year-old Sumerian jigsaw puzzle fall into place. Current-day Delphic Oracle Lisa Emmer races against an alignment of planets and comets to prevent the fulfillment of a prophecy of demons, a snake goddess, and the birth of a “wondrous child”.

Vol. 3: PARIS A GO-GO, the SECOND Havilah Gaie International Mystery by Tracy Whiting

Elegant Havilah Gaie is a worldly academic female sleuth who isn’t afraid to get her hands dirty—a self-described “academic version of Pam Grier’s characters”. Havilah, aka La Belle Américaine, has become a darling of the Parisian media. When a right-wing media personality is fished out of the Seine, two extremist factions start shooting at each other. Both groups try to use her as a pawn in the power struggle. Suddenly she’s a suspect as well as a target.

Vol. 4: LOVE BITES: “an engaging, sinister romp” by Adrienne Barbeau, author of the Vampyres of Hollywood series.

Glam movie star Ovsanna Moore is the successful owner of her own Hollywood film studio and the star of 17 blockbuster horror films, plus three, sadly, that went straight to video. She looks pretty great-- especially for a 450-year-old—and though she’s had flings with luminaries from Genghis Khan to Errol Flynn, Beverly Hills detective Peter King’s got what it takes to catch her eye and hold her interest. A cop story with bite…and romance.

Vol. 5: SAMSON’S DEAL, the FIRST wonderfully wry Bay Area Mystery by Shelley Singer

Oakland carpenter Rosie Vicente knows her way around a two-by-four, and she’s known to be handy with one in a fight—a trait much valued by her friend and sometime-partner in crime investigation, Jake Samson. Jake’s been hired by a friend of a friend, a progressive political science professor who’s the primary suspect in his wife’s murder. Jake and Rosie go inside a radical right wing activist group to which the wife is connected. An assortment of garden variety Berkeley kooks and interesting plot twists keep things hopping till the very end.

Vol. 6: TORCH SONG, Shelley Singer’s post-apocalyptic thriller that features a new kickass, gunslinging heroine

It’s 2066, and biological warfare has wiped out pretty much everything. Rica Marin’s a mercenary—a hired gun, soldier, and spy who can hold her own against the roving bands of bandits, godders, causies, breeders, and khakis. She answers only to whoever can keep her in the meds she and her only living relative need to survive the plagues.

Maybe not on sale, but currently included with Prime Video if anyone is interested. It's next on my list to watch if I ever make it through the 21 seasons of Silent Witness...

Roman Blood is the first in Steven Saylor's Gordianus the Finder series, which series I've quite enjoyed. It has dropped to £0.99 at Kindle UK.

link: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B005QMP2DM

Spoiler:
Quote:
A thrilling puzzle from the ancient world with real historical characters and based on a case in Cicero's Orations - Roman Blood is a perfect blend of mystery and history by a brilliant storyteller.

On an unseasonably warm spring morning in 80BC, Gordianus the Finder is summoned to the house of Cicero, a young advocate and orator preparing his first important case. His client is Umbrian landowner, Sextus Roscius, accused of the unforgivable: the murder of his own father.

Gordianus agrees to investigate the crime - in a society fire with deceit, betrayl and conspiracy, where neither citizen nor slave can be trusted to speak the truth. But even Gordianus is not prepared for the spectacularly dangerous fireworks that attend the resolution of this ugly, delicate case...

If you do enjoy this and want to read more in the series, it is worth knowing that while books 2, 3 and 4 are £4.99, £4.99 and £5.99 respectively, you can get the first four books in an omnibus for £6.99.

The first two titles in the Lord Edward Corinth & Verity Browne series by David Roberts have dropped to £0.99 each at Kindle UK. (Taken together with the Saylor title, I wonder if this is the start of another C&R Crime sale of first and/or second titles, similar to what we had a few months ago...)

Sweet Poison, #1: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B005E87YT8

Bones of the Buried, #2: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B005E8745W

And, similar to what @murraypaul points out for the Saylor series, there is also an omnibus for the first four titles in this series. And since the third and fourth titles are £3.99 each, if you know or suspect you will want all four, the omnibus at £6.99 is a better value: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00GHK71MW

I read several of the early titles in this series in DTB, picked up on business trips to the UK, and enjoyed them, but the later titles have mostly stayed a smidge too expensive in e-book for me to indulge.

One of the few series where I liked the video versions - although I don't watch many videos, so there could be more out there that I'd like, and I just don't know it .

I think I remember being a little disconcerted because IMS the actor playing Hugh is changed not just once, but twice, during the series, which made things a little bumpy IMO. But still, I agree, very enjoyable.

It's perhaps worth noting that the omnibus goes on sale from time to time. I see that I bought it for £3.99 last August.
