The Chill is the 11th Lew Archer novel by (MWA Grand Master) Ross Macdonald.

Quote:
In The Chill, a distraught young man hires private investigator Lew Archer to track down his runaway bride. But no sooner has he found Dolly Kincaid than Archer finds himself entangled in two murders, one twenty years old, the other so recent that the blood is still wet. What ensues is a detective novel of nerve-racking suspense, desperately believable characters, and one of the most intricate plots ever spun by an American crime writer.
Rarely discounted, it is currently $2.99 at all the usual places.

If you like Chandler, you should love Macdonald.

The Temptation of Forgiveness is the most recent (2018) in the awesome IMO Commissario Brunetti series by Donna Leon - at least until the new one comes out in March. It has dropped (yeah, hooray, woo-hoo, ) to $1.99 as part of the US Kindle Daily Deal today, not matched, at least as of yet, at Kobo US.

link: https://www.amazon.com/Temptation-Fo...dp/B074WFFPVG/

Spoiler:
Quote:
In the twenty-seventh novel in Donna Leon's bestselling mystery series, a suspicious accident leads Commissario Guido Brunetti to uncover a longstanding scam with disturbing unintended consequences

The memorable characters and Venetian drama that have long captivated Donna Leon’s many readers are on full display in The Temptation of Forgiveness. Surprised, if not dismayed, to discover from his superior, Vice-Questore Patta, that leaks are emanating from the Questura, Commissario Guido Brunetti is surprised more consequentially by the appearance of a friend of his wife’s, fearful that her son is using drugs and hopeful Brunetti can somehow intervene. When Tullio Gasparini, the woman’s husband, is found unconscious and with a serious brain injury at the foot of a bridge in Venice after midnight, Brunetti is drawn to pursue a possible connection to the boy’s behavior. But the truth, as Brunetti has experienced so often, is not straightforward.

As the twenty-seventh novel unfolds in Donna Leon’s exquisite chronicle of Venetian life in all its blissful and sordid aspects, Brunetti pursues several false and contradictory leads while growing ever more impressed by the intuition of his fellow Commissario, Claudia Griffoni, and by the endless resourcefulness and craftiness of Signorina Elettra, Patta’s secretary and gate-keeper. Exasperated by the petty bureaucracy that constantly bedevils him and threatens to expose Signorina Elettra, Brunetti is steadied by the embrace of his own family and by his passion for the classics. This predilection leads him to read Sophocles’ Antigone, and, in its light, consider the terrible consequences to which the actions of a tender heart can lead.

The Wanted is the most recent (2017) in the Elvis Cole/Joe Pike series by Robert Crais. It has dropped to £0.99 as part of the Kindle UK Daily Deal today. Even though I don't really follow this series, I'm tempted, just because I love it when most-recents go on sale for good prices .

‘Another rewarding page-turner by one of the most reliable storytellers in modern crime fiction’ Daily Mail

Seventeen-year-old Tyson seems a normal teenager: socially awkward, obsessed with video games and always hungry. But his mother has a feeling that her sweet, nerdy son is hiding something … and she’s just found a $40,000 Rolex watch under his bed.

Suddenly very frightened that Tyson is involved in something bad, she gets in touch with private investigator Elvis Cole and asks him to do some digging.

The information that Cole uncovers surprises everyone. Tyson spooks and runs. And then people start dying ...

The first three "Pot Thief" mysteries by J. Michael Orenduff are available in a single volume -- The Pot Thief Mysteries Volume One -- and on sale at Amazon right now. I bought this last night for $3.99 -- today it's showing for me at $3.03. This is a very good price since the books are available individually at $8.99 each.

The three stories are The Pot Thief Who Studied Pythagoras, The Pot Thief Who Studied Ptolemy, and The Pot Thief Who Studied Einstein.

These stories are published by Open Road Media, and they tend to change their prices quickly, so I don't know how long this offer will last.

The Bone Tree is the 5th in the Penn Cage series by Greg Iles. It has dropped to $0.99 at Kindle US as part of the Daily Deal, matched at Kobo US.

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/Bone-Tree-Nov...dp/B00M70YWKK/
Kobo US: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/the-bone-tree-2

Spoiler:
Quote:
From #1 New York Times bestselling author Greg Iles comes the second novel in his Natchez Burning trilogy—which also includes Natchez Burning and the upcoming Mississippi Blood—an epic trilogy of blood and race, family and justice, featuring Southern lawyer Penn Cage.

Former prosecutor Penn Cage and his fiancée, reporter and publisher Caitlin Masters, have barely escaped with their lives after being attacked by wealthy businessman Brody Royal and his Double Eagles, a KKK sect with ties to some of Mississippi’s most powerful men. But the real danger has only begun as FBI Special Agent John Kaiser warns Penn that Brody wasn’t the true leader of the Double Eagles. The puppeteer who actually controls the terrorist group is a man far more fearsome: the chief of the state police’s Criminal Investigations Bureau, Forrest Knox.

The only way Penn can save his father, Dr. Tom Cage—who is fleeing a murder charge as well as corrupt cops bent on killing him—is either to make a devil’s bargain with Knox or destroy him. While Penn desperately pursues both options, Caitlin uncovers the real story behind a series of unsolved civil rights murders that may hold the key to the Double Eagles’ downfall. The trail leads her deep into the past, into the black backwaters of the Mississippi River, to a secret killing ground used by slave owners and the Klan for over two hundred years . . . a place of terrifying evil known only as “the bone tree.”

The Bone Tree is an explosive, action-packed thriller full of twisting intrigue and deadly secrets, a tale that explores the conflicts and casualties that result when the darkest truths of American history come to light. It puts us inside the skin of a noble man who has always fought for justice—now finally pushed beyond his limits.

Just how far will Penn Cage, the hero we thought we knew, go to protect those he loves?

Maigret and the Lazy Burglar, apa Maigret and the Idle Burglar, is about 3/4 of the way through Georges Simenon's Maigret series. It has dropped to £0.99 at Kindle UK. Most of the books in this series spend their time at ridiculous prices in both the US and the UK, so grab it if you want it!

Spoiler:
Quote:
Set against a high-profile hunt for the latest criminal gang to hit Paris, Maigret is determined to track down the murderer of a quiet crook for whom he cannot help feeling affection and respect.

Penguin is publishing the entire series of Maigret novels in new translations. This novel has been published in a previous translation as Maigret and the Idle Burglar.

Five of the six titles (books and novellas) in the India Black series by Carol K Carr have dropped to £0.99 each at Kindle UK. I quite like this series (although some may not like the premise) and hoped that the sale meant a new title was coming. But, no new title shows as on the way...sigh!

Now $1.99 at Kindle US, not at Kobo US, at least as of now. I've read and enjoyed both titles in Williams' short Anne Marie Laveaud series...

They don't seem to have any tie-in sales for further works by the same authors this time around, but maybe they'll add some later.

Beau Death is the most recent (2017) in the Peter Diamond series by Peter Lovesey. I've not read any of this series, but have read and enjoyed Lovesey's Bertie (Albert Edward, Prince of Wales) short 3-book historical series. Beau Death has dropped to £0.99 at Kindle UK.

Quote:
A wrecking ball crashes through the roof of a terraced cottage in Bath and exposes a skeleton in eighteenth-century clothes. Can these possibly be the remains of Beau Nash, the so-called King of Bath, whose body is said to have ended up in a pauper's grave?

Peter Diamond, the city's most experienced detective, is ordered to investigate, but grappling with historical events causes ructions in his team until everyone is diverted by a modern killing during a fireworks display on the Royal Crescent lawn.

But Beau Nash refusesto be ignored - and when astonishing new facts emerge about the case, Bath's history is rewritten and mysteries ancient and modern are fused in a devastating climax.
