My first reads of the year are two off my TBR!
Hild by Nicola Griffith (Kobo) - This book is making me work. There is so much historical research that I keep having to pause to look things up. But I am completely engaged, even if the pace is much slower than I am used to. The Song of the Lark by Willa Cather (Audiobook) - Due to gaps in my schooling, I did not read my first Cather until I was in my late 20s. I fell in love with One of Ours before I had ever heard of My Antonia. Song was nestled in between its more famous neighbors of O Pioneers! and My Antonia. I saw it in audio at my library, and as I'd not read it, snapped it up. |

I've just finished Kingdom of the Blind, the 14th Gamache story, and my third book of 2019 after C.J. Cherryh's Inheritor and Elizabeth Peters The Mummy Case. I found Penny's latest to be very much more to my taste than several of its predecessors, and am also really enjoying the linguistic anthropology in the Foreigner series. So I am now reading Precursor while also catching up with Hamish Macbeth in Death of an Honest Man. I started it just out of a desire to have read the whole series, but so far, 10% done, it's very much more engaging and enjoyable than the majority of the series were for me.

Two more books completed:
"The Egyptian Book of the Dead", by E.A. Wallace Budge. Part of my on-going (and VERY long term!) project to read all the Penguin Classics. The Book of the Dead is a collection of ancient Egyptian funerary "spells" to provide the deceased person with the information required to safely navigate the perils of the underworld and reach the "Field of Reeds" - a heavenly analogue of Egypt - where he or she could spend eternity in an idyllic existence while other people did all the work ![]() "Bedlam's Edge", by Mercedes Lackey and others. A collection of short stories set in the world of elves, bards, etc, encountered in her "Bedlam's Bard" and "Serrated Eges" series. Bought from Baen in 2005, and very enjoyable. |

Precursor was a riveting read, Cherryh's Foreigner series continues to delight, but now I'm reading You Say Potato: A book about accents, by David and Ben Crystal.

I finished off last year with...
Book 4 of the Amelia Peabody series, Lion in the Valley by Elizabeth Peters (Barbara Mertz). It was amusing but not much new or interesting. 3/5. My least favourite of the series so far. A short story The Story of Kau Yu by Peter S. Beagle. Excellent ... but would have liked more. I need to chase down some more of his work. The Disappeared by Kristine Kathryn Rusch. Very good, 4/5. It put me in mind of Asimov's The Caves of Steel a little bit - the detective in a sci-fi setting thing. The story moved along at a good pace and the characters and setting are interesting. Not sure the aliens are that convincing, but they worked well enough for this first story, and I'll see how things go in the next books, because this first book of the series was good enough fun that I've bought more. And the first book of the new year is... The Left Hand of Darkness by Ursula K. Le Guin. 4/5 - I'll reserve other comments for discussion in the New Leaf Book Club where this is coming up soon. |

I've been re-reading Harry Potter. I'm on Half-blood Prince, so almost done. I'm thoroughly enjoying my re-read.

I'm in the middle of a complete re-read of it. Mostly the Audible versions, though I go back and forth to the eBook versions as needs dictate. I'm currently on Betrayer. But after this, I'll have to stop and switch to the le Guin for the book club.

Reading the new Terry Goodkind book Siege of Stone for my first book of the year. Not the best fantasy but read this author for years out of habit. I still enjoy them enough.

I am SO pleased the Book club chose that one - I hadn't read it, and found it a very interesting and thought-provoking read. And not unrelated to Cherryh's works, in the sense of being anthropological SF.
