You're right, they aren't tied to Prime. It's a fairly new perk for having a paid membership from Audible. The free picks for January will be available this Friday.

I do not need more books to read. I am not a video/movie person so this is not a benefit for me and I do not own a television. As for music I am happy to find the song via Youtube add to my playlist. When I am at home sitting I am listening to an audiobook while I crochet or knit.

But thanks for your opinion and telling me the other benefits.

I hear ya. Prime has a lot to offer, but only if what they offer is of value to you. I dropped my Prime membership last month because the video and delivery options were no longer of value to me. My so-called two-day deliveries kept arriving late and Hulu offered me video service for $1 a month for a year. So why should I pay Amazon $119/yr ($10/mo) for late delivery service. I'll re-evaluate Prime next Black Friday.

I was never offered a Prime extension. Most of the time I was offered an apology. No big deal, because I'm not missing Prime.

I called and asked for, and got, a one month Prime extension every time a package missed its guaranteed delivery, until I apparently hit a limit for the year, then they just started giving me money on my account.

They apologize well--financially, I think I'm actually ahead at this point--- but honestly, I'd rather have the packages show up dependably on time.

I plan on staying with Prime when my renewal rolls around next month. Now that I've finally canceled cable TV after wavering about it for ages, Prime Video has become even more important. I'm saving so much without cable that the cost of Prime is a drop in the bucket.

Well, they should. You are important!

Show up at the door (be dressed to the nines, having had a coiffure that day, etc.), present your MobileRead credentials. and a one-page summary of how many followers MobileRead has, how many members MobileRead has, the stats about number of hits on the subforums that you moderate. It's imperative that you have a digital photo of all of the cutting-edge electronics that you've bought and reviewed--Alexa, Echo, whatever they are. It is important, too, to pass out business cards (make sure that they've been professionally done). And--this is very important--if they don't let you in, _make a scene_. Somewhere along the line, make sure that you pitch a fit about not receiving an invitation _this year_ (you don't have to tell them that you've never received one _any_ year ). If all of those fail, get on your cellphone, call a guy, dressed as you are--that you've hired in advance--who is a weightlifter or is wearing one of those inflateable (sp?) muscle suits, and have him show up. There's more to add.

Trust me, you'll get in.

I'll go ahead and check on airline tickets. It probably would be only about a two-hour flight from SeaTac.

I am only _halfway_ kidding.

A few of those instructions probably are over the top.

As for me, I hate crowds, and want to stay as far away from that place as I can.

Downpour -- Rental of the Week -- exp 08 Jan -- avail 19 Feb
  • $1.99 -- Fletch Reflected -- Gregory Mcdonald/ Dan John Miller --> ?? hrs --> mystery
Quote:
The Fletch Mysteries (book 11)

Directly following the events in Son of Fletch, this indelible series comes to a close with Jack Fletcher Faoni following closely in his father’s investigatorial footsteps.

After dropping his very first groundbreaking news piece onto the desk of Global Cable News, Jack is once again a free agent. But before he can set out to search for the next big scoop, he receives a phone call from an old fling who pleads for his help. Shana, recently engaged to the son of a multimillionaire inventor, is convinced that the recent “accidents” surrounding her future father-in-law are much more than that—someone is determined to murder him. Somewhat intrigued, and frankly, without anything better to do, he secures himself a job at the palatial estate as the resident pool boy and quickly gets to work.

Realizing he might be in over his head as the attacks begin to escalate, he calls in the one man whose peerless wit and quirky investigation skills can’t be beat: his father, I. M. Fletcher.
Rental FAQ

Spoiler:
Quote:
When does my rental period begin?

Your rental timer will begin counting down when you first initiate the download on your device or 10 days after purchase, whichever comes first.
Quote:
How long can I listen to a title?

All digital rentals provide a minimum of 30 days to listen to a book from the time you initiate your first download. With some of our longer books, such as Atlas Shrugged (63hrs), we extend the listening period to 60 days. You do have the option of purchasing a 5, 10, or 20 day extension after you have made your rental purchase.
Quote:
How many times can I listen to my rental?

You may listen to a rental as many times as you would like until it expires.
Quote:
Can I extend my rental time period?

Once you are logged into your Downpour.com account, you can purchase a time extension for any of your previous rentals via THIS link. After clicking “Extend Rental,” you have the option of purchasing a 5-day ($1.95), 10-day ($2.95) or 20-day ($4.95) extension. If your rental has not yet expired, the purchased time will be added onto your rental. (Example: if your rental has one day remaining, and you purchase a five-day extension, you will now have six days total before your rental expires.) If your rental has already expired, the extension will allow you to listen to your book again for the amount of time purchased.
Quote:
Can I have the same rental on more than one device?

You may listen to your audiobook rental on as many personal devices as you own. Your rental time will be synced across all devices on which you have installed the Downpour app.

You have to ask for it. But personally, I usually just order everything with slow shipping checked, and use those free digital credits to buy movies and music. I get at least $100 a year, so Prime basically pays for itself even before you factor in the free ebooks, prime streaming, and other benefits.

I don't order that much and I'm always offered non-digital credits for slow shipping. Even if I take the offer, I get it again the next time. It's been ages since I was offered digital credits.

Like I said, it's no big deal not to have Prime since I have Hulu for a year. To me, Prime's biggest benefit is Prime Video; the other perks were bonus add-ons for me.

We cut the cord---er...the satellite downlink-- a few months ago, and we have so much stuff to watch now, at a fraction of the cost, I can't believe we waited so long to do it. It seemed like we always had a good reason for keeping it, but looking back, nope, more like fear of change and FOMO.

Prime is far from our primary source of video entertainment, but it's definitely a nice-to-have. I find at least something unexpectedly interesting every time I look.
